-- quickly given interpreters
When Gary Malkowski, the ASL-signing Canadian, won the
election in 1990 for a seat in the Ontario Parliament,
the first law that was passed was to quickly give him
interpreters. When Mojo Mathers, a signing New Zealander
won a seat in her nation's parliament in 2011, her
fellow legislators REFUSED to give her interpreters.
She had to fight tooth and nail to get the interpreters.
Now - in Japan, Yanetani Atsuko, who uses sign language,
was quickly given interpreters when she recently won a seat in
Japanese assembly. Canada, Japan, New Zealand - different
attitudes!
