Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Willard J. Madsen,
a long time professor (44 years) at Gallaudet, that
departed us. He pretty much distinguished himself
in these four areas - English, ASL, poetry and drama.
He liked to mingle with the students at the legendary
Gallaudet snack bar during his free time on the campus.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Jim
Inwood, Milton, WI, that departed us.
He played three seasons of football at Gallaudet
during the sixties. He was a starter at linebacker
and before enrolling at Gallaudet he turned down
feelers from several small colleges to play
football for them. His first love, however, was golf - and was one of the better golfers on the Gallaudet golf team. After Gallaudet he became the greens superintendent of the Renwood Country Club in Round Lake, IL. He served in that capacity for nine years before moving on to other endeavors
in life. It is believed he was the only deaf person to serve in that capacity at a country club.
Top stories about the deaf:
Two restaurants in India just opened up for business
this week. These restaurants have an all-deaf staff -
waiters and chefs and managers.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (same as our own IRS)
has trained 100 deaf people on how to file tax
returns on their own without depending on other people.
Minnesota Valley Transit Authority has installed
a kiosk where deaf passengers can communicate in
sign language on questions and directions.
The U.S. attorney's office reached settlement with
Methodist Healthcare. Same old story - no interpreter
for a deaf patient, and was sued.
Terry Wilding is the new superintendent of the
Minnesota State Academies for the Deaf and Blind.
Terry is deaf.

DEAF MEMBER OF HEARING COLLEGE FRATERNITY
A deaf member of a hearing college fraternity
was given a new-member hazing.
He, and new members of hearing college fraternity
were blindfolded and dumped at a park, a long
distance away from their college campus.
During the car ride to the secret location,
the hearing frat members could communicate with
each other by voice. The deaf Frat member was
stuck - alone, blind and abandoned!

PEOPLE EXCITED ABOUT SIGN LANGUAGE FAST FOOD PEOPLE
DeafDigest is puzzled. For many years he went
to Starbucks, McDonalds and other fast food
places. From time to time a hearing worker, knowing
sign language, would communicate with him.
No big deal! Yet, more and more newspaper
stories are written about Sign Language workers
at Starbucks, Chick-fil-A use sign language
with deaf customers.
Very amazing or no big deal?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As we continue to look at the history of captioning, we realize that the early efforts by court reporters to computerize laid the foundation for modern captioning.
By the late 1970s, the door to computer-aided translation (CAT) was open for many court reporters. However, because of the cost, only the large freelance firms could afford to purchase or lease the systems that were available.
As time went on, the size of the computer hardware began to shrink, and a number of different companies were formed to provide CAT software. One of the things that would completely revolutionize CAT over the next few years was when IBM took a small microprocessor chip manufactured by Intel Corporation, went to a small company in the State of Washington named Microsoft, and had that company develop an operating system for a new machine called a personal computer.
By the late 1980s, the first of the DOS-based CAT systems for court reporters were coming onto the market.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Hayes Jackson is an agent with the Alabama Cooperative
Extension System in Anniston. He is deaf, but functions
as a hearing person. He goes around in the state,
advising people on their needs with agriculture and
nature. He was written up in a local newspaper, praising
him for his enthusiasm while explaining things to
people and answering their questions.
