DeafDigest dedicates this edition to John Thomas Wheeler,
who departed us. A former resident of Huntsville, Alabama
and a former student at Alabama School for the Deaf, he
was an aeronautical engineer with the NASA. His list of

election then efforts will be made to reduce barriers

Deaf people using the Apple iOS devices are able to
turn on captions and subtitles. This feature, unfortunately,
is not for the built-in Apple default YouTube apps.
Deaf people of Qatar, needing emergency attention
are now able to use a special 992 line. It was installed
last week. Yes, it is the same as our 911 line.
There are sign writing books being sold in USA and
Great Britain. And now in Poland, the first
deaf sign writing book is being published.
ACCESS News, which serves the Austin, Texas Deaf
Community, will be aired again for its second
season.

Raphaël Button, a deaf French political leader, was elected as Substitute Deputy in Rosny Sous Bois, a city of 40,000
people near Paris. Not exactly sure what a Substitute Deputy
means - a search of that phrase on the web did not produce
a satisfactory answer. Apparently it has something to do with
being a back up legislator in event of absence of the regular
legislator.

TWO DEAF IN A BIG FACTORY OF 10,000 EMPLOYEES
At a big factory, there are two deaf employees.
This factory is in a small town where Deaf Community
is small. That factory has over 10,000 hearing employees.
Both deaf employees hate each other, and they
don't talk to each other every day.
They admit that their social life is lonely in that
small town!

THE WAY THE DEAF IS SERVED IN TEXAS
No two states operate the same as far as state commissions
of the deaf are concerned.
Some states are serious about serving the deaf. Some states
are lax when serving the deaf. DeafDigest editor knows which
states are lax but does not want to name these offenders.
Anyway, what about Texas? Interesting - The Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services has 14 Deafness Resource Specialists
that work with local agencies to provide advocacy services with
communication access.
It works in Texas. Other methods work in other states. Not

Who reads the public notices in newspapers - these "boring"
public legal announcements?
The average person doesn't - because as DeafDigest said -
boring. So, who reads them?
The advocacy groups do. There was a recent public notice
in a Washington, DC handout newspaper regarding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004.
These advocacy groups submit comments on important
disability-related issues.
A SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF OLDER THAN AMERICAN DEAF SCHOOLS
Many of our deaf schools in USA were founded during
the 19th century.
Has there been a school for the deaf that was founded in
the 18th century?
Yes, but not in USA. It is the Royal School for Deaf Children Margate that opened its doors in 1792.
Is it the oldest deaf school in the world? DeafDigest
does not want to say yes without doing research on other
deaf schools in the world.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As a CART provider, I find that in certain circumstances one of the
hardest things for me is hearing and understanding what people are
saying. Sometimes people with a hearing loss don't realize that
there are situations where hearing people do not hear or understand a
speaker.
If a speaker turns his or her back on you or if someone next to you
coughs, sneezes, or laughs, it can be impossible for someone with
normal hearing to hear every word that is said.
In a classroom setting, it can be difficult to get the students to
speak up to be heard. Sometimes they intentionally want to speak
softly so that no one will hear them make a mistake, or they may be
shy and not want to be embarrassed.
Another problem can be when the CART provider is sitting in a
position where it is difficult to hear. The CART provider may be
positioned in the corner of the room, and if the acoustics are not
good, the CART provider may not hear or understand what is going on.
There can also be noises outside of the room that interfere with
hearing. Construction might be going on, and these would be sounds
the CART provider would have to try to block out in order to hear the
speakers.
If you find your CART provider using "(inaudible)" frequently
during an event or if you find that what is coming up on the screen
does not make sense, you might want to ask the speakers to speak up.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
Your car alarm goes off, and you know nothing about it.

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

In South Dakota there is a disagreement between the deaf client
and his attorney. The attorney said that the comments the
deaf client made through an interpreter should be suppressed.
It is on the grounds that the interpreter was not qualified,
and that the deaf client waived his Miranda rights without
knowing it. A judge will rule on this issue soon.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
After a hard fought soccer game, the members of the Scranton
Day School for the Deaf (Pennsylvania) team sat down to a post-game
meal at the cafeteria of the opposing high school team.
The accommodating dieticians (perhaps too accommodating) handed
each player a Braille menu for them to select their meals!
Said Scranton athletic director/team coach Doug Boersma
"Congratulations to the team for keeping it all in perspective
and being gracious and courteous as they enlightened the very
embarrassed workers after a long, tiring and frustrating game."
The team didn't win on the field but they won in the
cafeteria.

since have become the Scranton School for Deaf and Hard of
Hearing Children, under the auspices of the Western
Pennsylvania School for the Deaf)

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Who gestures better? A deaf person or an immigrant hearing person?
DeafDigest editor was at a Subway eatery ordering a sub. A
hearing immigrant person was standing next to DeafDigest
editor.
The Subway counterperson had no problems following DeafDigest
editor's gestures. He, however, struggled while trying to deal
with the hearing immigrant's gestures!

- Coordinates training of staff in the areas of general procedures, behavioral techniques and community based programming

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's in Rehabilitation, Counseling, Education or related field
- American Sign Language skills
- 3 years of experience in Vocational/ILS services
- Knowledge of DDD system, Vocational Rehabilitation and CARF accreditation standards
- 3 years of supervisory or administrative experience

Job Title: Facilitator/Counselor
Main duties: As a direct service provider, the client.s facilitator will assist the service recipient in the development of functional skills through one-to-one training in the community and natural settings, consistent with the service recipients. Individual Service Plan (ISP). The facilitator will provide service recipients with high quality, community integration training, volunteer opportunities and employment development and exploration. Creel Industries is looking to fill positions in the areas of North County to include Poway, Ramona, Fallbrook, Rancho Bernardo, as well as Central, East & South San Diego.
Qualifications: High school diploma, or at least one year of previous experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities. Experience is important, but motivated & enthusiastic individuals, who lack experience in the field, but are eager to work in a rewarding social services area, will receive the necessary orientation. JOB SUMMARY Supervises children with severe medical conditions in
classrooms for deaf/hard-of-hearing and blind/visually impaired students;
may monitor and care for students with trach tubes and feeding tubes and
may suction students; attends to the medical needs of students as they are
transported to and from school; follows the directions of the Registered
Nurse in dispensing medications and in performing routine and emergency
medical care for the students; assists the classroom teacher to include
health impaired students within the normal classroom activities; attends
IEP conferences, parent meetings and staffing upon invitation of the
classroom teacher and/or school nurse; assists classroom teacher in
following recommended programs established by the Occupational Therapist
and Physical Therapist for the medically fragile students; collects data
for school nurse and/or classroom teacher regarding student health issues;
performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the
State of Utah is required. Ability to follow written and/or oral
instructions; communicate clearly and effectively; enter, transcribe,
record, store or maintain information in either written or electronic
form; maintain a high level or confidentiality. This position has
strenuous physical requirements such as long periods of standing, walking,
recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar
activities and recurring lifting of students with limited mobility. Must
be able to lift and carry over 50 pounds. There are risks found in
potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g.
being subject to possible physical attack. (Risks are related to the
possibility of working with students who are non-compliant, self-abusive,
and/or aggressive.) Preference may be given to individuals who have
American Sign Language (ASL) skills. Successful completion of criminal
background check is required for this position.
SALARY AND BENEFITS $14.03 hourly. This position is eligible for a full
benefits package including medical, dental, life and long-term disability
insurance, a retirement plan, paid leave to include annual, sick, and
holiday pay, and other valuable benefits. The State requires employees to

ASSIGNMENT PERIOD This is a full time position for nine months each

The Columbia University Sign Language Club is looking for an American Sign
Language teacher to teach once a week on Thursdays from 7-8:30pm on the
Columbia Campus. The skill levels of the students ranges from all levels,
so we need someone who feels comfortable teaching at all levels. It is
very laid back and a fun environment, with the first 45 minutes usually
devoted to vocabulary and grammar and the second half devoted to practice
and games. There is no set curriculum and it is a group of eager
students. Pay is $45/hour plus $4.50 for transportation. Classes run
from late September/early October to late April/Early May, with a few
weeks of break for winter vacation.
