- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to two deaf artists that
departed us.

The first one was Morris Broderson. The second one was
Bruce Norton

Both artists were outstanding and enjoyed great careers
in this field.

- What the best stories are saying about the deaf?

The Deafness Foundation of Pakistan has been telling
the public that people with hearing loss should not
see quacks that promise instant cure to deafness

A new pro soccer stadium across the street from
Gallaudet University? The DC United professional
soccer team that plays in the Major League Soccer
league, has been looking for a new stadium.
There are two sites in Washington, DC that has been
proposed as sites for the new stadium. One of the
sites is located in the Capital City Market,
which is across the street from Gallaudet University!

- Very Hot News

We have often read all about these freeze flash mob
performances. But not about a deaf freeze flash mob
performance - until a group of students from Iowa
School for the Deaf pulled off this feat in a
Council Bluffs supermarket.

School superintendent Jeanne Prickett said it
was excellent.

School outreach coordinator Cynthia Angeroth said:

This was a perfect public performance event for our students, who have been studying drama. They could easily
entertain the community without communication barriers. They practiced a month in advance, holding various poses
for five minutes so they could find which ones would really work at the performance. Shoppers smiled- they weren't
quite sure what was going on, but suspected something was different with all the television cameras parading down
the aisles! Most of our students didn't even blink. They were pros! Various poses were taken in the produce, bakery and food aisles- such as stopping by a cart, hugging, reaching for food, comparing nutrition labels, reading a store circular and more. Each pose was unique and steady.

Many pictures were taken. One such picture is at:
http://deafdigest.com/iowafreezeflashmob/

the student, with eyeglasses, pretending to study the
food prices, is Jenna Helms; the other student wearing
orange shirt is Carmita Wilson, who was "wondering"
which bakery item to take

- Another hot news

Effective June 30th, Lori Dunsmore will leave her position
as the director of Rhode Island School for the Deaf.
In a newspaper story, she refused to explain why she
is leaving.

- Sunday January 16th

The Pan South African Language Board is thinking of filing
a legal action against Central University of Technology
in South Africa. This university has not provided sign
language interpreters for a deaf student that was
accepted for admission.

- Monday January 17th

A TV reporter in Indianapolis remembers the MLK Day
few years ago. Indiana School for the Deaf had a basketball game with an opposing high school team.
The deaf team had no chance of winning the game
but to the surprise of the fans, almost won the game.
The deaf team was led by Derrick Brye, the team's
only black player. So impressed by Brye's play, the
opposing players went over to him at the end of
the game to personally congratulate him for his
great efforts. The reporter said it was the
magical MLK moment.

- Tuesday January 18th

Buddy Group Hotels & Resorts, a hotel chain in Thailand,
has solicited by the hotel staff at one of its hotels.
The funds will go to the Foundation of the Deaf which
will help with the needs of deaf children in the nation.

- Wednesday January 19th

Are we to be identified as the "deaf person" or should
we be identified as a "person that is deaf"?

This is the issue the Windsor Star newspaper, in Canada,
has brought up. This newspaper feels we should be
identified always as "a person that is deaf"!

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

A movie house in Knoxville has come up with an experiment -
to test the 3D and the captions at the same time. This
request was made by Sony. The movies are free but the participants must fill out a survey.

DEAF AGENCY DIRECTORS
Almost every city has a deaf service agency. Some
deaf service agency directors are hearing; some
deaf service agency directors are deaf.
Makes no difference if the director is hearing or
deaf.
What surprises DeafDigest is that some directors
"know nothing" about national deaf news that are
hot. They know a lot about home town deaf news that
are hot, but not about national hot deaf news.
It is important that all directors keep up
with national hot deaf news because it may
affect their own home town deaf programs.

FAMOUS HEARING AUTHOR OF DEAF BOOKS
Few years ago DeafDigest editor was introduced
to a famous hearing man who wrote a few deaf books
(psychology, sociology, Deaf Culture, etc.
He and the famous author sat down for a meal,
and both were chatting with each other.
It was a big shock to DeafDigest editor that
the famous author knew very little about the
deaf. The material for his books was based
on heavy research, but he could not answer
simple questions about deafness in general!
That famous author is still traveling in
USA and giving talks about deafness.
DeafDigest editor does not want to tell
you that person's name!

KNOWING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEARING AIDS
Do hearing aid users know these different types
of hearing aids?
Well, there are five different types, as follows:

- Behind the Ear
- On the Ear
- in the canal
- completely in the canal
- invisible

Next hearing aid type, please!

A RARE DEAFNESS DISORDER
There was a newspaper story this week of a woman with
this rare deafness disorder - bilateral endolymphatic hydrops.
It is so rare that an educator of the deaf never heard of it
when discussing this topic with DeafDigest editor.
This disorder means deafness is like an on and off
switch. One moment you are deaf, the next moment
you are hearing.
DeafDigest editor knows of one person with this
disorder. He graduated from a deaf school and
Gallaudet University, yet when one observes him
there is no hint of his hearing loss. It is only
on "bad days" that he is deaf like many of us.

HYPOCRISY IN MARYLAND
Way back in the early twenties, Austin Baughman,
not deaf, coached a strong baseball team in Frederick,
Maryland.
At that time, Maryland School for the Deaf had a
baseball team. There were several good players on the
deaf team that Baughman wanted for his own team.
Several deaf players played for Baughman while also
playing for the deaf team.
The school officials then felt that the deaf players
should stay with the deaf team and not jump to the
hearing team.
Baughman was very upset about the decision made by
the school officials.
What about it? The deaf people were not permitted
to drive in the state of Maryland.
Deaf people good enough to play baseball but not
good enough to drive cars?
Yes, according to Baughman, whom in his real job
was the commissioner of the state Department of
Motor Vehicles!
The deaf Marylanders felt the consequences of
Baughman's wrath - for they had to get permission
from the school superintendent to get driver's licenses!
This rule continued until 1950.

THE RIGHT AND THE WRONG WAY TO SIGN
A sign language group wanted to make sure that sign language
beginners sign the right way and not the wrong way.
We all know that those that use wrong sign language for some
words may result in laughter and embarrassment.
DeafDigest is not talking about ASL signs, but of the
Quapaw Native American tribe!
A newspaper ran a piece on the Quataw sign language and the
need to use the signs the right way.
No difference - we, the deaf, and the Quataw tribe members
are sensitive to signs used the wrong way.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Some people have asked if captioners are ever asked  to cover
assignments at the last minute, with little or no time
to prepare.

The answer to that is, yes, it happens because of illness,
equipment failure, emergency news coverage, and many other
reasons.

Hopefully, the captioner will have some familiarity with the
assignment because he or she captioned a similar or related
assignment before.

When 9/11 happened, captioners were captioning across the country
"by the seat of their pants."  Many had never encountered "al-Qaeda"
or many other related terms in their work before.  Also, many
brand-new, in-training captioners were thrown on the air at that
time because of the round-the-clock news coverage.  The experienced
captioners just couldn't keep going 24 hours a day.

Last year, we have seen expanded news coverage and special programs
related to the tragic earthquake in Haiti, and captioners have had
to step in to cover those assignments.

A MOVIE PLOT: EX-DEAF?
Solarbabies was a science fiction movie made in 1986. The plot
revolved around a deaf teenager that entered a cave and found a
crystal ball. Upon touching it, he became a hearing person. He ran out of the cave shouting "I can hear."
What was wrong with this plot was that the deafness of this
teenager was never mentioned at all right up to the moment
he touched the crystal ball.
Yes, script writers twist things all around.

DEAF POLITICAL AWARENESS

Q. Why cannot we have a Deaf Town where all of our political
leaders are deaf?

A. There were two efforts to establish a Deaf Town, one in
Georgia in the 19th century and one in South Dakota most
recently. Both failed to take off.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

After its hearing in San Francisco, the U.S. Justice Department
is now reviewing all comments at other previous hearings
to come up with suggested changes to the ADA regs.

......

The Deaf and the Law:

- location

Minnesota

- case

A Fortune 500 corporation would not hire a
deaf person for a job as a fork lift operator
because of his deafness

- result

with two attorneys working on his side, the
deaf person won the case and was hired for
this job

- comment

is there a difference between driving a car,
riding a horse, racing a car, piloting an
airplane .....and operating a fork lift?

For the deaf person, no. All he needs is a
set of eyes and to be careful.

And many hearing people, those that can hear,
are often not careful!

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Deja vu in Detroit! In an effort to train police officers to be
sensitive to the needs of the deaf the city Police department
selected a social service agency that has no deaf employees
and no deaf members on the board for this task. This comes
on the heels of the tragic shooting of Errol Shaw last year.
Needless to say the deaf community is very upset.

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

The royalty of Norway has now become picky when
selecting beneficiaries on their patronage list.
The fat in the royalty list has been pared down,
practically to the bone.
And fortunately for the deaf, Princess
Martha-Louise, one of the members in the royalty,
has not cut out the deaf from her royalty list.
Thank you, Princess Martha-Louise.

......

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

When there is a commotion in the hearing workplace,
the deaf employee is left out of the loop - yet it is
the deaf person that knows the reason for the commotion.
A certain file is missing. The deaf employee has that
file because he was working on it. The hearing employees
run around in circles asking for that file - but without
asking the deaf employee if he had that file.

Always happens. Why?

....

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

just now we had a short meeting and as usual, I had no clue what's up.

afterwards, I asked someone what that was about; he said "no heat tomorrow"

I read him as "don't eat tomorrow"

if you have lipreading tales, please share these with
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
