Thomas Pearson, who founded the National Center for Deaf Health
Research at the University of Rochester Medical Center, will be
leaving his position to assume a new position as the executive vice
president for Research and Education at the University of Florida
Health Sciences Center. DeafDigest is not sure if there would
be an impact, if any, on research on deaf medical issues at
either Rochester or at Florida. His first day on the job is
October 1st.
Top stories about the deaf:
Finally going to be razed are the old buildings of the Virginia
School for the Deaf and Blind at Hampton. When the school
closed for good in 2008, the state and the city both did not know
what to do with the buildings. It was a political tug of war until
a decision was just made to raze the buildings on the 75-acre
campus. For years the state operated both schools, at Staunton and
at Hampton.
How do you sign these words and phrases - Abenomics, plus 0 minus 5,
public assistance bashing, etc? The Japan Institute for Sign Language
Studies created these political signs for the benefit of deaf viewers
that want to watch political news on TV.
Kerwin Lloyd, a deaf Florida beekeeper, is considered to be one
of the world's best darts players. He recently won a major darts
tournament, competing against one of the world's top players.
He is serious about darts, traveling to tournaments and keeping
up with this sport by reading articles.
Ephraim Avea Nsoh, not deaf, is Ghana's Upper West Regional
Minister. He has threatened to blacklist contractors that do
not follow building standards, especially with the new building
for the Wa School for the Deaf.
Ron Tan, who is profoundly deaf and lives in Singapore, is a
professional pianist. He has been performing at events and at
restaurants. Wanting to help out the deaf and the disabled,
he has founded his own talent management outfit, called
Inclusive Art Movement.

A SILENT MOVIE THAT DISCRIMINATED AGAINST HEARING!
Beau Brummell was a famous silent movie, produced in
1924.
Famous actor John Barrymore was the star in that movie.
There were lot of dirty jokes that Barrymore and other
actors said during that movie. These jokes were not
subtitled.
Many hearing people did not know about it. But deaf
people that lipread, said there were many dirty jokes!

HEARING THAT TALK
You ride the metro subway. You see a hearing person
talking. You wonder - is he talking to himself, or is
he talking to the hidden cell phone, or is he talking

A hearing person would know which. A deaf person
may not know which.

WELFARE IS AN OLD FASHIONED WORD
Is the word "welfare" an old fashioned word? Yes, according to
the Pennsylvania Society for the Advancement of the Deaf.
They are asking the state House Majority Leader Mike Turzai to
have the name of the agency - Department of Public Welfare
to a more modern looking Department of Human Services.
Politics being what it is on the state level, it is uncertain
how the state legislative leaders would respond to this request.
By the way, Pennsylvania is the only state that still uses
the word Welfare with its agencies!

AN AGENCY MOVING TO A DEAF-FRIENDLY HEADQUARTERS
Bridges, a Nashville, TN agency serving the deaf, had a dream.
It was to get out of its long time headquarters to move to a
much better facility.
This dream was achieved this week. And it is deaf-friendly -
meaning open space with no walls to make communications much
easier, no glare from windows, chairs with no armrests, etc.
It took three years of renovations and planning to make
this goal possible.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being asked questions about their deaf clients - an example would be -
how old is your deaf client?
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories,
please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
A little more on the history of computer translation for court
reporters and captioners:
All of the early research and development work to attempt to develop
software to translate stenotype shorthand symbols into English was
carried out on IBM mainframe computers, making portability
impossible. By the mid-1960s, the U.S. government did have some
success with this system in translating Russian and Chinese technical
documents into English. IBM eventually stopped work on the project
because there was too small a market for this technology.
A few years later, a new company called StenoComp Corporation took
the government's research and development to the court reporting
market. StenoComp believed that if the system could translate a
foreign language into English, it could also translate stenographic
representations of English into English words.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
a hearing person tells a deaf person -
I rarely meet a deaf person and I don't believe the stories
that many hearing people have become deaf because of noise!
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw
The deaf of Iceland are not entitled to interpreters when
they travel overseas whereas hearing Icelanders are
entitled. This unfairness has upset deaf Icelandic advocates.
........
Did you know that -
Reatha Hirte, a deaf woman, operated French Reweaving Company,
between the 1950's and 1970's, employing many deaf women in
the needlework trade. This company was based in Cincinnati, Ohio
but much of her business was elsewhere - Denver, Columbus, Ohio,
Kansas City, MO, Indianapolis as well as from several foreign
clients. Her company also did contract work for bigger needlework
firms.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Good news for Hearing Movie Goers. The Hulk is back. Bad news for
Deaf Movie Goers. Lou Ferrigno, the original Hulk is The Hulk
no longer.
Why? Because director Ang Lee felt that the computer-generated
Hulk is better than the Original Hulk.
How does Lou feel about it? He quipped "the new Hulk cannot
sign autographs". And besides, Lou has a cameo in that movie,
playing as a security officer!
Original Hulk, lets' meet the New Hulk.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
When hearing people say something inappropriate,
we call it a slip of the tongue.
And why do these articulate hearing speakers
commit these slips of the tongues?
This is where our revered sign language may come
in! Psychoanalytic Psychologist Nancy J. Crown, not
deaf, is suggesting that her colleagues study
sign language to understand why these slips of the
tongues are being committed by the hearing. Her
piece was published in the recent edition of the
Psychoanalytic Psychology magazine.
She is saying that sign language offers
perspectives into communications that spoken languages
cannot cover.
......
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
There are many deaf employees in the federal government
sector. And the federal government is supposed to be
deaf-friendly, meaning interpreters and accessible
devices, etc.
Well, there was a story of a deaf employee in a
federal government agency who had to wait almost
a year to obtain an accessible device that he
requested, and in which his supervisor approved!
.......
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
A deaf man was talking about the Baltimore Ravens
with a hearing man
The deaf man thought the hearing man said:
We got Pajamas back
Getting pajamas back?
He actually said:
We got Bajama back
(explanation - Billy Bajama was let go by the
Baltimore Ravens few months ago but was asked to
come back again with a new contract)
