DeafDigest - 24 June 2016

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, June 24, 2016 -- a bear on deaf school campus Bears are everywhere, and not just always in the woods. One such bear strayed on the campus of the Kentucky School for the Deaf. Danville people were alarmed. Fortunately, the bear went back to the woods. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife said the bear was just looking for "free food" and finding none, went back "home"! That the new European Accessibility Act will not apply to them. This act promises full sign language rights for the European deaf. What will the British government do with it? Will the government ignore it or support it? We will not know for the next 2-3 years until the British government makes up its mind!   -- Bad, bad Chicago law Chicago had a law that banned disabled people from walking on the city streets. This law also included the deaf. A joke? No, in 1881, alderman James Peevey proposed this law and it passed. For 93 years this law continued on the books - until it was repealed in 1974! Did the cops really enforce the law to block the deaf from using the sidewalks? No. At least one less law insulting the deaf has been removed.   Latest deaf jobs: http://deafdigest.com/category/jobs/ Barry's collections of past articles (with today's update) -- Bell vs Edison http://deafdigest.com/collections/barrys-collections/ 06/19/16 Blue and Gold editions at: http://deafdigest.com/newsletters/
