As the general secretary of the British Deaf Association, he was able to change control of this organization by hearing people to the deaf. It was a long time in the making, but he succeeded. DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Neil Battle, Knoxville, Tennessee who departed us. He was a long time teacher and coach at Tennessee School for the Deaf. Top stories about the deaf: In Bolton, a town in Great Britain, sign language is being taught to a group of firefighters so that they can better communicate with deaf residents in case of fire emergencies. A very frustrated deaf student at University of Central Florida is Jacob Salem, a senior majoring in political science. He is saying that the university does not accommodate him on his need for interpreters throughout his four years. New York bus driver Edwin Cora, not deaf, was profiled by the New York Post as the "signing bus driver." He uses his ASL with deaf passengers that steps on the bus. Deaf Activists in Great Britain are complaining that pharmacists refuse to have private consultations with deaf patients - advising them on medicine for their health problems, eye infections, upset stomachs, allergies, etc. They are then forced to have physician appointments for these same reasons. The U.S. Senate has had its second hearing on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. on November 21st. Everyone agrees that we, the deaf and the disabled, are entitled to rights and needs - but no one agrees on how this piece of treaty should be worded! .............................................................. A COP STOPPING A DEAF DOG WALKER DeafDigest editor was walking his dog at 4 AM in Washington, DC. The dog wanted to go out for a walk, and DeafDigest editor cannot say no. He was walking the dog when a cop, driving his police car, stopped, used his speaker to say something. DeafDigest editor was not scared - because he was not breaking any laws - but had to make sure the cop was aware that he is deaf. The editor waited for about one minute, raised his arms slowly to his ear to tell the cop that he is deaf. The cop took the hint, waved his hands and drove away. LAST TO ADD ASL PROGRAM IN OHIO Miami University (Ohio) has finally added ASL courses as an offering to its students. The university officials admitted they delayed in adding these courses, acknowledging the fact that they were the last university in the state to offer such courses. Better than nothing! A COMMENT BY A DEAF PHYSICIAN Scott Smith is a deaf physician in the Rochester, NY area. At a recent workshop he said: I had a lot of challenges in medical school and in my career.  It would have been nice to have someone I could have talked to discuss those issues, someone I could share those frustrations with or I could share with the challenges I was faced with WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? in a mixed deaf-hearing conversation, hard of hearing signers would shout aloud to the interpreter what the hearing person was saying. Said the angry interpreter: I can hear! if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series With computer-aided transcription (CAT), more and more court reporters found things that they wrote on their steno machines that would not translate with the correct spelling when written phonetically.  New ways of writing had to be developed.  One of the things reporters found they had to change was how they wrote certain vowel sounds. What is a reporter to do with the words "pare," "pair," and "pear"?  Before using the computer to translate their notes, most court reporters wrote them all the same.  Even after using the computer, many reporters still found it easier to just let the computer translate it as "pare/pair/pear," and then pick 1, 2, or 3 when editing the transcript. Some reporters found they could write "pair" differently, but they chose to let the computer translate "pare/pear," and then the reporter would choose between those two words when editing the transcript. It can still be a challenge for even the best court reporter or captioner when writing at over 200 words a minute to remember how to differentiate among these words. DeafLaw In 2007, the Michigan Legislature  passed a law that entitles the state Division on Deaf and Hard of Hearing to write interpreter regulations. Much easier said than done, because these regs still have not been written - no fault of the deaf agency. ....... Did you know that - Petra Howard, a deaf woman, was appointed as the chief of the Minnesota Bureau of the Deaf in 1915. In these days Bureau of the Deaf was equivalent to today's Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She only stayed in this position for a few years - but had a long career in the deaf counseling field. When she retired, she received letters of congratulations from the President and from the Governor. ..... News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: The superintendent of the three Ontario schools for the deaf in Belleville, Milton and London, just submitted her resignation, effective at end of this week.
