-- deaf man in his 50th season as football coach
Head coaches of all sports normally do not last 50
years, especially 47 years at one school, but
we have one coach still at it for that so many years.
It is Gary Klingensmith, who is profoundly deaf.
He is now into his 47th season as head coach at
Juniata High School, Mifflintown, PA. He retired
as a teacher several years ago. Previously he
coached three seasons at Gallaudet, so adding
47 plus 3 equals 50 seasons!
-- White House opposites attract
President Calvin Coolidge, the US president
(1923-1929), has a very strong deaf connection,
through his wife Grace. While he was dating
her she was a teacher at Clarke School
for the Deaf. They were exact opposites of
each other. Calvin was a cold person who
did not smile and was unfriendly. Grace was
a warm woman that loved people, especially
the deaf!
