- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to a deaf person who
perished in the 9/11 disaster ten years ago. At that time,
it was not known if there were deaf victims. But it
was learned recently that Leon Lebor, a deaf florist,
was one of the victims. He worked in the Twin Towers
lobby at the time of the disaster.



- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

Over the years we have a number of disc jockeys that
are either deaf or hard of hearing. The latest one
to surface in the news is Lori Martinez, who operates
out of a radio station in Chicago. What does a DJ
really do? Picks out music that are to be shown
on the radio program.



The Senses Foundation (Australia) which works with the
deaf and the blind, has lost $1.5 million in Australian
dollars because of bad investments. As a result, this
organization has filed a lawsuit against Counterpoint,
a financial investment company, for mismanagement.




- Very Hot News

Are restaurants in New York, some of them considered to be
the best in the world, friendly to the deaf, as well as
with the disabled? This is what a New York district
attorney is trying to find out. His office is distributing
surveys for these select restaurants to find out.


- Sunday September 18th

On Bravo's reality series "Work of Art" one of the participants is Leon Lim, born in Malaysia but a resident
of New York City. He is deaf. The irony is that he is
competing in a TV show despite having never owned a TV in his life!



- Monday September 19th

The National Health Service of United Kingdom
has stopped distributing hearing aid batteries for
hearing aid users. No reason was given but the
hard of hearing Britons are upset about it.



- Tuesday September 20th

The Cochlear is suffering. This Australian company
was embarrassed about its product recall. And because
of this recall, its stock price went down twenty
percent. While just 150 of the 25,000 of its implants
had to be recalled, the reputation has been tarnished.


- Wednesday September 21st

McCormick & Schmick's, a famous restaurant chain, has
been charged by the EEOC on basis of job discrimination.
A deaf prep cook was fired despite earning good work
performance reviews. Efforts to negotiate a settlement
failed, and which led to the filing of charges in the
courts.



- Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

Jim Terrion, a deaf resident of Prince George, BC, was
said to have raised over $500,000 in funds for the
Terry Fox Foundation. It seeks to raise funds for
cancer research.

A HEARING AID BRIBE
Almost all bribes involve money. But a hearing aid
bribe?
Yes, it took place in Florida three years ago.
A political group wanted state legislators to pass
a bill for them.
This political group bribed state legislators
with free hearing aids. It did not matter if legislators
were hearing or deaf.
125 legislators accepted hearing aids. Two "honest"
legislators turned it down.
It is not fair; poor deaf people in Florida cannot
afford hearing aids; rich hearing legislators that
do not need hearing aids still accept it as a bribe!

A CAR ACCIDENT
What is a half hit-run accident. It is when a
hearing driver has an automobile accident with a
deaf driver.
The hearing driver got out of the car and
said something to the deaf driver.
The deaf driver told the hearing driver that he
is deaf and to please write down on a pad.
The panicked hearing driver got back into the
car and drove away!
DeafDigest editor hopes the surprised deaf
driver copied the license number of the
half hit-run hearing driver!

Mill Neck Family's Fall Harvest Festival
October 8 and 9, 2011
Mill Neck, NY

Mill Neck Family's Fall Harvest Festival annually brings the
best of the autumn season to Long Island. This year's Festival,
to be held on October 8 and 9, 2011, from 9 am to 5 pm, at 40 Frost
Mill Rd. in Mill Neck, NY, will be better than ever. Also known as
the "Apple Fest", this 50 year tradition features a wide
variety of apples, crafts, grilled bratwurst, cheeses, baked goods,

2011 milestone anniversary mementos - Mill Neck Manor School for the
Deaf is 60, the Mill Neck Manor Early Childhood Center is 20 and Mill
Neck Services for Deaf Adults is 25. Additionally, a special
performance by CODA comic Alan R. Abarbanell, "The ABABABA Road
Tour" chronicling his experiences growing up hearing in a Deaf
family, will be held on Friday night, October 7th, at 7:30 pm in the
Deaf Education Auditorium on the Mill Neck Manor campus. Tickets are
$15 per person and can be purchased at the door.

SHODDY AND DISTORTED INTERPRETING ON TV NEWS
An association of the deaf have filed a formal complaint
regarding shoddy and distorted interpreting on TV news
programs.
That is terrible. Where in USA is it taking place?
No, not in USA, but in Botswana!
The complaint was filed by the Botswana Association of the Deaf,
saying TV interpreting has led to confusion rather than informing
the deaf as to what is going on.
Probably Botswana does not have its own professional interpreting
certification agency, like our own RID.


A VISITING POET AT UNIVERSITY OF IOWA
Famous poet Ilya Kaminsky is an Ida Beam Distinguished
Visiting Professor. This week he is visiting University of
Iowa, featuring his works.
A web site describes him involved as a poet, critic, translator and professor.
Well, what about it? He is deaf. Has been deaf since age of 4.
And what makes it more interesting is that his deafness is not
mentioned on this site:

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Many people ask me how I "type" so fast.  The reason is that CART
providers and realtime captioners do not "type" most words letter
by letter.  They write whole words or phrases phonetically on their
steno machines. 

Captioners put unusual names and terms in dictionaries in their
computer software.  Most of the software programs for CART providers
and captioners use a main dictionary for words, phrases, and names
that would be appropriate for all assignments.  Then they also have
what are called job dictionaries. 

A captioner may have a job dictionary for the names of basketball
players for a basketball game, and that captioner may also have a job
dictionary for the names of news anchors and personnel at a specific
television station.  A CART provider might have a job dictionary for
biology terms used in college classes, and he or she might have a job
dictionary for the names of all the people and places discussed at
the local city council meeting.   If unusual names and terms are used
that are not applicable to all assignments, it makes sense for the
captioner to create a job dictionary.

If a word or name comes up that is not in one of the captioner's
dictionaries for that assignment, the captioner must think quickly
enough to fingerspell that word, or an error will occur.  





A BREAKTHROUGH IN SRI LANKA
Are we seeing a breakthrough in Sri Lanka, an island nation
off the shores of India.
The deaf were never allowed to drive cars. There was an
announcement this week that the Minister of Social Services
is going to ask the cabinet to allow the deaf to drive.
It was the request of the Sri Lanka Deaf Persons' Federation
that spurred the minister into action.

TO BE DEAF AND TO BE ISOLATED

There are newspaper stories saying that technology will
render obsolete our sign language  - and that the future
deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their
peers - and that deafness will be completely eradicated
thanks to the CI and genetical engineering.

True or false?

DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example:


A deaf woman, attending a medical school, never saw a
deaf person in her life and had this impression that
she was the "smartest" deaf person in the world.
The interpreter, a Coda, whose parents were Gallaudet
graduates, immediately told the medical student that
she is not the only smart deaf person around and that
there are many of them around all over the world.
Still angry about that comment, the interpreter quit
her assignment the next day!

Well, Ryan Patterson, not deaf, invented that device and has
already won $420,000 in cash and in college scholarships.
There are many different signs for "computer" and for
"football" and so on. Is a Glove going to capture it all?

A deaf woman, wanting to take driving classes in Texas,
was denied when requesting an interpreter. She filed
a lawsuit, and this case has been referred to the
US District Court.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

SMUGGLING A GRANDFATHER ON THE GROUNDS OF US NAVAL ACADEMY
Erin Coppedge, who is deaf, is a member of the women's soccer
team at George Washington University. Her team had a game against
Navy on the grounds of the US Naval Academy,
Because of security concerns, walk-in fans were not permitted
to watch the game. Grandfather Bo Coppedge is a retired admiral
and a former Navy athletic director. Not even his imposing
credentials and connections with the administration at the
academy would allow him to watch his granddaughter play.
Erin had to resort to subterfuge to sneak in her grandfather
to the game.
The Washington Post wrote up this little episode. You guessed
it - Erin's deafness was not mentioned in the story.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

The newspapers said that Oom Zandberg Jansen passed
away early in the week.
No one would know who he is unless one lives in
South Africa and avidly follows rugby (they are just
as crazy about their rugby as we are with our football).
Anyway Oom was a legendary radio and TV commentator
years back who did not hesitate to make his views known
on anything related to rugby in South Africa.
And - Oom was deaf. The newspaper report said:

Jansen, although he was deaf, attracted a great following
as a radio and television commentator on rugby who pulled no
punches.

A deaf commentator? Won't happen in USA but it did in
South Africa.

TYPICAL DUTIES:  Serves deaf and hard-of-hearing children in their home communities by providing information, technical assistance and consultation with the goal of promoting appropriate intervention strategies and educational practices for deaf and hard of hearing children in Montana.

Facilitates the implementation of the Family Advisor Program, which involves home-based early intervention services for infants and preschool age children.  This includes working with parents, overseeing the work of family advisors, and collaborating with other service providers to develop Individual Family Service Plans (IFSPs) that appropriately meet the needs of children.

Provides classroom support, consultation and technical assistance for school age children. Provides classroom based assessments, offers recommendations and suggestions to classroom teachers and specialists who directly serve deaf and hearing impaired students, and provides information on professional and instructional resources. Participates in evaluation team meetings and assists in the development of Individual Education Plans.

Assists in the planning and facilitation of annual Family Learning Weekends, Summer Skills Programs, and facilitates other learning opportunities for students.  Works with the MSDB admissions coordinator to facilitate appropriate referral of students for evaluation and placement at MSDB.

Completes summary reports of site visits and contacts, travel logs and expense vouchers, and other documents required by the outreach program supervisor.  Keeps Outreach Data Base current. Reviews and approves reports and invoices submitted by contracted Family Advisors.

Additionally, serves as a resource to the medical, home, education and community service agencies by providing training and information.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Bachelor's or Master's degree in Deaf Education.  Previous experience working with deaf and hard-of-hearing children in an educational setting preferred.  Applicants with degrees in related fields and previous experience working with deaf and hard-of-hearing children will be considered.  Must be able to obtain a Montana Educator's License with special education endorsement within three years of date of hire.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:  Knowledge of general special education instructional practices and specifically best practices in the education of the deaf; educational and audiological assessment procedures and interpretation of assessment results; support services typically utilized in the education of the deaf, including speech/language and interpreter services; special education rules and regulations and the IEP/ETR process. Ability to comply with data collection, records management and reporting features assigned to the position.  Ability to develop and maintain relationships with a broad constituency through the application of skills and knowledge fundamental to the position as well as excellent interpersonal communication skills.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:   The successful employee must be self-directed and able to work with limited supervision or direction.   The position requires extensive travel working hours beyond those of a typical teaching position with an average of 2 to 3 nights away from home each week.  The position may require occasional work on weekends and extended workdays with meetings before and after regular school hours.  This is a "tele-work" position requiring the employee to work out of a home-based office, usually located in a community outside of Great Falls.  Telework employees must be able to maintain the basic machines and functions of an office as well as securing routine maintenance for the state vehicle assigned to the position.

COMPENSATION:  This position is a contracted position 200 days.  Salary is determined by the schedule as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
