DeafDigest does not know what to make of the
possible new law in Wisconsin to require insurance
companies to pay for cochlear implants.
Two things may or may not happen:
- more and more families, with deaf children, will
move to Wisconsin just to take advantage of free
implants
- that insurance carriers will stop doing business
in Wisconsin

The famous (Hearing) Monopoly board game involves
properties such as Kentucky Ave, Pennsylvania Ave,
Vermont Ave, New York Ave, etc.
What about Deaf Avenues? This may be possible
because of efforts of the Deaf Awareness Group of
SW Missouri which is building and marketing their
own Deaf Monopoly game!
Deaf-related businesses and groups have been
contacted, and as a result, there are a few

Jackie Chan, the famous "fighting martial arts" actor
has lost his "deaf" job - as goodwill ambassador to the
upcoming Deaflympics.
He lost his job because of his outburst that hit the
newspapers all week.
In a way, DeafDigest understands his frustrations.
He wants to be a full fledged actor, playing speaking
roles and serious roles - but producers continue to
typecast him as a "fighter" - which frustrates him.
How many of us, the deaf, have been frustrated
in being constantly underemployed all our lives?

The "Children of a Lesser God" is the most famous
deaf-themed play.
And approximately ten deaf actors, over the years,
have directed these local Children of a Lesser God
plays.
And the latest one is Steve Baldwin who will be
directing this play in Corpus Christi, Texas.

A LAWSUIT IRONY
There is an irony with a lawsuit a deaf woman filed
against an Ear, Nose and Throat medical clinic.
That clinic refused to provide her with an interpreter;
she sued and won.
The irony is that the Ear, Nose and Throat medical clinic
works with many deaf patients, and they should be familiar
with their interpreting needs!
Why did they refuse? We will never know.

MAKING POLITICAL CONTACTS
Every deaf service agency needs a lot of money.
Also, every school for the deaf needs a lot of money.
Political contacts with the state legislators are
very important.
One superintendent of a deaf school made his
own political contacts. He visited the offices of
all legislators in his home state. That state has
almost 200 legislators. This means 200 visits
with legislators' offices.
He would not talk about his school for the
deaf. He would just introduce himself as the
deaf school superintendent, and then they would
talk about anything - baseball, fishing, lousy
weather, great restaurants, etc, etc.
Every year when the legislators vote on
the school budget, they all remember who the
superintendent is!

Well, what this blog does not mention is that
we, the deaf, because of our deafness, are so

These Harvard rejections bother these students
whereas Deaf rejections only enable us to just
move on and try to get our foot in the

A month ago, Edgar A. Smith Jr, a Texan, passed away
and the newspapers ran a piece on him, citing his long
list of accomplishment.
One such accomplishment was founding a school for
the deaf.
The newspaper did not say which school it was.
A google search failed to come up with that school.

CSI PROGRAMS SPURRING INTEREST AMONG THE DEAF
Do deaf students show interest in forensics
as a result of watching TV programs? An example
is the CSD programs.
Career counselors at Gallaudet and NTID
both say so.
Todd Pagano, who teaches science at NTID. said:
Absolutely! Students talk about CSI all of the time.
ALL students seem to arrive to science programs here
because they want to be forensic scientists (due in
part to CSI, crimes shows, movies, etc.).
Both Gallaudet and NTID will make course
accommodations to help students who want to make
forensics their career.
MANY FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE A LINK WITH THE DEAF
- General Douglas MacArthur, famous World War II military leader
A club for the deaf was formed in Buffalo, NY, and it was named
MacArthur Club of the Deaf. It sort of competed against another
newly formed deaf club - Buffalo Club for the Deaf. Fortunately
for the Deaf Community of Buffalo, both clubs merged. Buffalo
Club for the Deaf stands very strong these days.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
There are more situations these days where sign language
interpreters and CART providers are working together to
provide access for people with a hearing loss.
There are conventions, seminars, and meetings where there
are Deaf, late-deafened, and hard-of-hearing participants.
What people need to realize is that the most important
thing is that all participants need access to what is
taking place. For people who learned sign language as
their first language, they will not be comfortable reading
CART from a computer screen. However, there are people
who are late-deafened or hard of hearing who do not know
sign language well enough to be able to understand what
is going on by relying on a sign language interpreter.
It is important to remember that CART providers and
interpreters have different roles, but they have a common goal
of providing communication access to all participants.

Crash course on the Digital Television Transition
This is a continuation of our weekly educational column on
addressing concerns about the analog TV shutoff and the final
transition to digital TV which is scheduled to occur on or
before June 12, 2009.
Question this week:
I just bought a brand-new digital television. I'm now having problems
with captions. What do I do?"
Answer:
There is no simple answer to that as captioning problems are
widespread. Each equipment set-up is unique to the person who
installs it. Caption problems could be caused by the TV,
cable/dish receiver, or the broadcast signal itself.

Researchers at University of East Anglia in United
Kingdom said they have come up with a Lip Reading
machine that can lipread different languages.
As usual DeafDigest is skeptical. Every language
has their own accents; no two hearing people speak with
the same lip movements.
Are these scientists saying we now will be having a
one-size-fits-all Lip Reading machine?

a group of deaf employees in a factory filed charges of
discrimination, saying they were not provided with
interpreters and TTY machines
result:
case was thrown out of court
comment:
it was a case of claims being twisted all around by
deaf plaintiffs saying the employer didn't provide
such accommodations. Factory owners' testimony said
they did - and the judge sided with them.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
More and more State Association Pageants have
difficulties in lining up contestants. In one
state, the Pageant was cancelled.
Sign of times? Bashful contestants? Or it is
not a "cool" thing to enter such contests?
Perhaps State Associations need to beef up
their incentives to attract contestants - college
scholarships, prize money, future employment
opportunities, etc?

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Dear Abby addresses the issue of a deaf guest ignored
at a party.
Happens to all of us - that we, the deaf, are pretty
much ignored at all-hearing parties.
What does Abby have to say in her column that addressed
this issue recently?
She says the hostess should have made it a point to
check on the deaf guest and to tell everyone that the
guest is capable of lipreading. Lacking that, to make
a joke that the deaf guest is related to either
Warren Buffett or Bill Gates.

Why is it that we always assume that a private school
offers better educational services for the deaf than a
public school?
The cruel reality is that when interpreters are
requested at a private school, then administrators
plead poverty.
And what about the public school? The request for
interpreters are almost always accommodated!

A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's pet peeve:
Your students/clients want interpreters one day before
class starts, signing up at the last minute.

Wraparound Family Partner
Walden School at The Learning Center for the Deaf
Framingham, MA
The Family Partner works as part of a team in the Walden School
Wraparound Program, a strength-based family centered program
serving families in their communities.
The Family Partner is responsible for support and advocacy to
parents/caregivers, providing some direct services and
helping families identify and access community resources.
The right candidate should have experience providing supportive
services to families or to individuals with emotional or behavioral
disturbance, preferably as a caregiver.
ASL fluency and bicultural competency are required.
Bachelor's degree preferred.
Must be able to work collaboratively with a team and posses effective
interpersonal and communication skills.
Time flexibility and some availability during evening/weekend hours
is required as is a valid Massachusetts drivers license.

The American School for the Deaf is a residential and day program
located in West Hartford, Connecticut. The program is a
comprehensive center-based and community-based educational program
serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students from preschool through
high school.
ASD operates the PACES Program, a special educational/residential
unit for emotionally/behaviorally disordered students, who need
educational, social, and psychological services beyond those
offered in traditional school settings. The program's goals are
to maximize students' potential and return them to the least
restrictive educational environment.
SCOPE OF DUTIES:
Supervision of adolescents during out-of-school hours and the
assumption of other responsibilities as designated by the Director
of the PACES Program.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma. Prior experience working with
emotionally/behaviorally-disordered children and youth in a
residential setting. CPI/CPR Training/Certification required or
ability to secure. Ability to write reports, work as a team member,

Clinical Counselor
Central Region/ Morganton, NC
Clinical counselor is part of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program
that provides behavioral health assessment, clinical treatment,
case management and advocacy services to deaf and hard of hearing
persons in a 27-county service area.
Clients served will be children, adolescents and adults with a
broad range of diagnoses of hearing. Clients will be referred from
throughout the 27-county catchment area by any of a wide array of
organizations and agencies that have identified the need for the
specialized services delivered by this program.
Master's degree from an accredited school of social work or an
appropriate human services field and must have a professional
license or be license eligible.
Due to the population served by this position, applicants must be
proficient in American Sign Language.
Prefer experience working with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Grade/Step to be determined by qualifications and classification
of applicant
Position is 100% FTE with comprehensive benefits. This is a non -
