- Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Monita Hara who departed
us few days ago. Because of ill health, she stepped down as the
head of the Louisiana School for the Deaf only last month.
Said a colleague:
She was very supportive of programs at the school. I am going
to miss her
Said a superintendent of another school:
She took over the school at a very difficult time and brought back
stability. She was quiet and calm and didn't ruffle easily
and was a very stabilizing leader
Said DeafDigest editor:
One of her first moves was to restart the dormant school football
program, and to immediately let me know, just to make sure the
school was part of the DeafDigest Sports football loop. She also
had a sense of humor - pretended to explode in rage when I accidentally
addressed her as Bonita, instead of her real name - Monita
We all will miss you, Monita. The school prospered in the short time
you served as the head
- What the stories are saying about the deaf?
Liz Abernathey is a first year medical student at the
University of Vermont College of Medicine. She is now
shadowing doctors at the Fletcher Allen Health Care.
She is deaf.
Linda Cundy, Edmonton, Alberta, was written up in
a newspaper story, pushing for a video relay service
that would cover Alberta, as well as British Columbia.
She consults the Edmonton Public Schools on behalf
of deaf and hard of hearing students and also serves as the secretary of the Alberta Association of the Deaf.
She made it a point on the difficulties of setting
up medical appointments or getting pizza delivered
to her home, etc.

Our bad 20 genes? The average person has 20 bad genes,
these genes that do not function at all. This was what
Daniel G. MacArthur, not deaf, of the Wellcome Trust
Sanger Institute (UK) is saying. His report was published
in Science. DeafDigest is not sure if he had the deaf
in mind, with these "bad" genes that we carry!

LUCKY TO BE DEAF
We are lucky to be deaf in one way. It is noise.
Hearing people are always complaining about fan noise,
tea kettle noise, kitchen blender noise, hair dryer
noise, dishwasher noise, alarm clock noise, washing
dryer noise, etc, etc.
Even when a person opens and closes the desk
drawer, it still is noisy.
This is why we are lucky to be deaf!

DEAF WITH SOMETHING?
We get tired of reading newspaper stories that
say "he is deaf with a CI" or "he is deaf with
a hearing aid", etc, etc.
We do not read newspaper stories that say
"he is hearing with eyeglasses".
We never read a newspaper story that says
"he is deaf without devices."
Must deaf people have labels with them in
newspaper stories?

A SIGN LANGUAGE CLUB
Many high schools and colleges have ASL Clubs,
for beginners wanting to learn and use ASL.
One such club is interesting. It is the club at
the Widener School of Law in Harrisburg, PA.
Future attorneys wanting to use ASL to help
deaf clients? Great, on one condition, that they
become fluent. Attorneys that struggle with ASL
are not helping deaf clients!
A DEAF PERSON AS AN AUDIOLOGIST
Tina Childress is a deaf audiologist with a school
system in Illinois.
In an interview, she was asked for advice to give to a
deaf person that wants to be an audiologist.
She said:
Being an audiologist with hearing loss means that you will have a unique empathy for working with your patients. You have walked in their shoes! Be careful though as you talk to patients that it remains about THEM and not
about YOU.

15 YEARS TO ACCEPT CAPTIONS!
The Harkins Theatres issued a press release announcing
the captioned movies at their movie houses. Mike
Bowers, the Harkins president, said:
We are thrilled to introduce this new technology to our moviegoers
What Harkins does not say in the press release was that they
fought for 15 years against movie captions, and they spent a
lot of money on attorneys in the courts.
Said a deaf attorney:
Finally, after 15 years!
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Another area that may sometimes cause translation difficulties for
stenocaptioners is when they use what we call brief forms. Just like
in traditional shorthand, brief forms are necessary for the
captioners to achieve the speed necessary for captioning. Whole
words and phrases can be written in one stroke on the steno
keyboard.
Brief forms for high-frequency words are absolutely invaluable.
However, problems can occur when a brief form conflicts with another
word or phrase or when a stenocaptioner misstrokes that brief form,
and the result is that another word or phrase may translate instead
of the intended wording.
A captioning error that occurs when a captioner is using a brief form
may be one of the more difficult errors for someone to "read
through." Many times these types of errors occur with proper names
or places, so if you are trying to read through this type of error,
try replacing the erroneous word with an appropriate name.
A couple examples would be:
"President Kennedy told crutch to take his missiles and go home."
"The leaders were a Pittsburgh Pirate and adroit Tiger."
These should read:
"President Kennedy told Khruschev to take his missiles and go home."
"The leaders were a Pittsburgh Pirate and a Detroit Tiger."
A COMMENT BY MOJO MATHERS
Mojo Mathers, who is deaf, is an elected member of the
New Zealand parliament. The parliament speaker refused to
pay for her accommodation needs, thus causing outcry and
fury everywhere.
She said:

carrying on" as a bright side of being deaf!

STRUGGLES OF A DEAF PERSON IN AN ISOLATED BRITISH TOWN

if you have no public transportation and no car.

The Deaf and the Law:
Last week's DeafDigest brought up the issue of a relay operator
interpreting a felony committed by a deaf person.
A deaf administrator, of an agency serving the deaf, said:
I believe that the interpreter is unable to report what is heard and transmitted. That interpreter is a transmitter. I believe various courts have clarified this. For one thing, the interpreter won't know where the call is coming from or going to
.......
News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
We continue to read all about the acute shortage of
interpreters! An example is a student wanting to enroll
at an interpreting program in a low population state.
There are no interpreting training programs elsewhere in
the locale; the nearest one is 250 miles away; the subscriber
wishes to mix with the deaf community to pick up signs, but
no one in the deaf community wishes to accept that person.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Last week's DeafDigest mentioned AgBell looking
for a new Executive Director/CEO, with the hope that
a deaf person would be hired for this position.
A clarification is in order - AgBell, at one time,
had a late-deafened Executive Director/CEO at the
helm. It was Donna Sorkin, who only served for a short
time before moving on to her current position with
the Cochlear Corporation.
Because Sorkin moved through a succession of
deaf-related high level positions within a short
time frame years ago, it was easy to forget that
she was a past AgBell Executive Director/CEO.
......
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
The sponsoring organization of a big deaf event coming up in a
major American city is offering the event participants a
chance to save money on car rentals. On the event web site
is the discount code that is needed to get that discount from
a major auto rental chain. It was later learned that the regular
rates of that major auto rental chain was much lower than the discount supposedly offered through that deaf event discount code!
....
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
I thought the boss said:
I am going to Best Barn. Do you need anything?
Best Barn?
the boss actually said:
I am going to Petsmart. Do you need anything?
