DeafDigest - 26 June 2014

DeafDigest Mid-Week edition, June 26, 2014     -- a well known deaf person lost election for courtroom judge In Baltimore County, an election for courtroom judges took place. The deaf contender was Kelby Brick, a well known deaf attorney/ activist. He lost the election while four current judges were reelected. If he won, it would have been history as the nation's first ASL judge.     -- a strange requirement for interpreting students in Kansas There is only one college interpreting program in Kansas and it is at Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, KS. Students cannot enroll at this interpreting program without a bachelors' degree from other colleges. This is a backwards, or a reverse direction, getting bachelors first and then associate. This requirement has turned off many interested interpreting students.     -- a hazed deaf student wins settlement in a lawsuit A deaf student was a former freshman member of a wrestling team at a Wisconsin high school. Four members of the wrestling team hazed and bullied him. Coaches did nothing to stop it. He transfered to another school and filed a lawsuit against the first school. It took a long time but he finally won a financial settlement. He will be attending Gallaudet this fall but not wrestling any more. Why? Because Gallaudet has no wrestling team!     Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/deafdigest1 Twitter: @deafdigest 06/22/14 Blue edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-blue-newsletter/ 06/22/14 Gold edition at: http://deafdigest.com/category/newsletter/newsletter-gold-newsletter/
