This just in - Have we ever had, in the past, a deaf person who was a Rhodes Scholar? DeafDigest does not think so - but this may change as Rachel Kolb, a deaf graduate student in English at Stanford University, was recently accepted for the world prestigious Rhodes Scholars program. She is interested in issues pertaining to access, equality and difference and communications, and she will go for her double masters in contemporary literature and in comparative social policy. Top stories about the deaf: It was announced last week that Bert Carter was leaving his position as director of Vermont Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing/Austine School for the Deaf. It was learned that he was appointed as the president of Willie Ross School for the Deaf in Longmeadow, MA. His first day on the job is July 1, 2013. A new school for the deaf in Michigan? St. Martin Lutheran International School for the Deaf will open doors in the 2013-2014 school year. It is located in Hartland, about 60 miles from Detroit. Will this school survive? DeafDigest has seen several new deaf chartered schools struggle and then close doors shortly afterwards. We, in USA, have C-SPAN and it is captioned. British deaf that want to follow political discussions in the Parliament is simply out of luck. Kate Green, the MP, is not too happy about it and wants the Parliamentary Finances and Services Committee to fund captions on its parliamentary TV program. She was told that the BBC is not under any statutory obligation. She is not giving up and still fighting to have captions on the parliamentary TV programs. Do British hospitals provide interpreters. Yes, said the hospital spokesperson; no, said the frustrated deaf couple. The deaf couple - Paul and Samantha Voisin, said 5 times they wanted an interpreter and couldn't get one. The hospital said they provided interpreters 60 times (for their son that has serious medical issues). The catch - must make an appointment for an interpreter; those showing up in the emergency room may face problems getting an interpreter. So, it is a matter of they said, the hospital said! The Institute for the Advancement of Deaf Persons in Israel has complained that the deaf people wear beepers that do not work when emergency alerts have been transmitted. The Israeli Home Front Command is looking into this matter. .............................................................. Attention: interested ASLPI evaluators ASL Diagnostic and Evaluation Services (ASL-DES) will be conducting ASLPI training (phase 1) January 10-13, 2013 to a limited group of individuals who apply and qualify for the training. Individuals who successfully complete and pass all phases (1, 2 and 3) of the ASLPI training program will be eligible to apply for the full-time ASL Proficiency Evaluator position with ASL-DES that will be advertised. All other individuals who successfully pass all phases of the ASLPI training program will join our pool of ASLPI evaluators who work with the system on an "on call" basis and who assist in providing ASLPI evaluations for individuals, programs and businesses nationwide. The answer to that is, yes, it happens because of illness, equipment failure, emergency news coverage, and many other reasons.  Hopefully, the captioner will have some familiarity with the assignment because he or she captioned a similar or related assignment before. When 9/11 happened, captioners were captioning across the country "by the seat of their pants."  Many had never encountered "al-Qaeda" or many other related terms in their work before.  Also, many brand-new, in-training captioners were thrown on the air at that time because of the round-the-clock news coverage.  The experienced captioners just couldn't keep going 24 hours a day. Recently, we have seen expanded news coverage and special programs related to Superstorm Sandy and other natural disasters, and captioners have had to step in to cover those assignments. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF dealing with hearing people that just cannot believe that a deaf person could drive a car! (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. DeafDigest hopes the new executive director will align HLAA with other national organizations serving the deaf and the hard of hearing. A national coalition is only as strong as its weakest link. And the weakness of the coalition was that HLAA was not part of it. Not being part of the coalition was not what Rocky Stone had in mind when he founded the SHHH (now HLAA).
