Dedication -
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Carol Sponable,
who departed us. Because of her age, she graduated
from Galladuet in 1968 as a non-traditional student
and then worked as a medical librarian at the
Colorado Medical School. And on the side she was
heavily involved with organizations of the deaf in
the Denver deaf community and on the state level.
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Laura Snyder-Gardner,
and her deaf daughter, both of whom departed us.
They perished in a tragic fire in Virginia, not too
far from Gallaudet. She taught math at Gallaudet and
on the side, served as assistant coach with the girls'
soccer team at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf.
Top stories about the deaf:
Was the Inauguration Day events and festivities accessible
to the deaf? Yes - huge TV screens have been captioned
in real-time; ASL interpreters stationed at vital spots
on the Mall.
The Regional Day School Program for the Deaf in Rio Grande
Valley (Texas) sponsored a full day retreat for hearing
parents to help work with their deaf children at home
and at neighborhood activities.
The new president of St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf in
Missouri, is Peter Kachris. He is 77 years old, and while
he spent his full career in education, this is his first
experience working with the deaf.
The U.S. Department of Labor and the US Business Leadership Network are joining forces to promote a public service
announcement encouraging employers to hire the deaf and
the disabled.
A bad middle ear taken out and replaced with a
middle ear implant? A joke? No, this is what a
research team at Sweden's Chalmers University of Technology is working on. They are saying it could
restore hearing in some people that have become
late-deafened.

FIGHTING OR PLAYING?
We often see dogs rough it up with each other. Are they
fighting or playing? Hint - look at dog's tails and jaws.
We often see hearing people "rough" with each other.
Are they fighting or playing? Hearing people can tell by
listening to their voices - angry voice or playful
voice.
We, the deaf, often cannot tell if it is playing or
fighting!

HIRING A CONSULTANT IN A MOVIE FOR NOTHING
From time to time Hollywood people hire Deaf Consultant
to work with directors and producers in a big filming
that involves a deaf actor.
And sometimes hiring the consultant is a waste of time
and waste of money.
Why? Because when filming is finished, the film editors
may cut out scenes that involve deaf actors!

OWNING A UPS STORE
For convenience and quick service, the UPS store offers
everything - stamps, notary public, packaging, post office
box and others.
Every city has a bunch of these UPS stores. One such UPS
store in Olivette, Missouri, is owned by Scott Campbell.
He is deaf. A newspaper story written up on him said he
is successful.
As a sidebar, two deaf partners owned a similar store,
not UPS, in the metro Washington, DC area. After operating
the store for some time, the business was sold to a hearing
person.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being asked -
where can I learn sign language?
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
All steno theories teach shortcuts or brief forms for certain words
and phrases that are the most common. Because most captioners learn
the same theory as a court reporter, a common word for them would be
"defendant."
Many steno theories teach that the steno for DEFT can be written in
one stroke instead of writing it in three strokes as DE/FEND/ANT.
Another common brief form is the steno for SDENT, which is the word
"accident." It can be written in one stroke rather than three
strokes - AK/SI/DENT.
Each captioner will find certain words and phrases are more common in
his or her work, and they will memorize brief forms that someone else
may be using, or they will create their own.
A captioner may find that the word "thunderstorm" comes up
frequently when they caption the weather, so they may incorporate a
brief like THORM in steno.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
Hearing people complaining that the deaf person cannot read their
lips
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

Laws in USA and Belgium are different when it comes to

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Stumped right in the backyard of Santa Fe is New Mexico
governor Bill Richardson.
He was touring a middle school when an eighth grader came
to him and asked about having ASL classes taught in public
schools.
Clueless, the governor didn't know what ASL was all about
and "promised" to look into it and get back with her.
Well, Santa Fe is where the New Mexico School for the Deaf
is located!
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Who will win the Super Bowl? Will the Pats
win one more time to achieve a perfect season?
Or will the Giants ruin Pats' dream? Is Tom
Brady playing a cat and mouse game with the
media that constantly refers to his walking
boot?
Stay tuned - and while we are focused on
the game, do pay special attention to the
pre-game Pepsi commercial that will be
in sign language.
And not just that, Pepsi is the official
sponsor of the Super Bowl captions.
Official sponsor? Meaning they will sponsor
all Super Bowl commercials? No, just the game
captions. What this means is that it is up to
each sponsor to caption or not to caption
their commercials, sigh!
What prompted Pepsi to go the ASL and
captioning route? DeafDigest thanks two
deaf employees at Pepsi, Darren Therriault
and Brian Dowling, who worked with Pepsi
colleagues to make this possible.
......
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
More and more hearing spouses are frustrated -
because of problems trying to communicate with their
late-deafened spouses. They consider deaf couples
to be luckier!
.......
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
At a funeral there were several people that the deaf person
did not recognize, so had to depend on a hearing cousin
to point them out.
The deaf person thought the cousin said, while pointing at a woman:
She was the character
Character?
He actually said:
She was the caretaker
