Be Prepared for Dangerous Weather
Storm season is upon us. Do you have a way to be notified when dangerous
weather is nearby?
One way is to use the Midland Weather Radio with Light and Bed Shaker
(SC-WAKIT1). Designed specifically for deaf and hard of hearing people,
this kit includes a weather alert radio that receives signals from NOAA
when severe weather is going to strike your area. A Silent Call strobe
light and bed shaker is connected to the radio. When severe weather is
nearby, you will be alerted by light, vibration and a loud audible alarm
on the radio, giving you time to get to a safe place. The LCD screen on
the radio will also read out the specific warning such as "TORNADO".

This just in -
Jayde Scholl, a 5-year old Chinese deaf girl, was adopted and
lived with her adoptive family in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Two twists of fate! She was scheduled for a CI at the Moore Medical Center on the very day the tornado hit the area. Prior to the tornado, the
surgery was postponed because something else came up with her
adoptive family. The tornado hit the medical center. The CI
rescheduling saved the girl's life. Also, the CI equipment for
Jayde was thought to be lost because of the tornado. Some one
found it and it is now in a safe place, ready for the rescheduled
surgery!
Top stories about the deaf:
The final three candidates for the superintendency of the
Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind are Joel Coleman,
Larry S. Taub and Karl A. Wilson. Taub is deaf; DeafDigest
does not know about Coleman and Wilson. Interviews take
place on June 6th and announcement to be made the next day.
Taub has experience, serving as the top administrator with
Governor Baxter School for the Deaf (Maine) and Pennsylvania
School for the Deaf.
Will the dynamics behind the board of Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind change for the better after going
through so much turmoil? Five new board members, appointed
by the governor are Kathy Jankowski, Taralynn Petrites,
Elaine Baldridge, Michael Gordon and Mark Syms. It is a
balance - two work with the ASL deaf, two work with
the blind and the fifth is from the PAM sector (Pathological, Audiological, and Medical perspectives on deafness)
Telecommunication companies in New Zealand are unhappy.
They have been asked by the government to chip in to
help pay for Deaf Relay Services. They have until June
5th to file comments.
The famed Bristol University's Centre for Deaf Studies
has been suffering from university's budgetary cuts.
As a result, Deaf Culture has lost its influence. An angry
writer has made this an issue in a recent local publication.
Isidore Niyongabo, a deaf graduate student at University of San Diego, was able to use his sign language, with an
interpreter, to win a $15,000 grant during the university
Social Innovation Challenge. He wants to use the money to
help educate the deaf of Africa, as he is a native of Burundi.

Teaching Positions Available at a Two-Week Sign Language Summer Day
Camp
Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf has openings for two teachers for
our Summer Sign Camp for Hearing Kids. The camp runs July 8-12 and
July 15-19 from 8AM to 4PM. Candidates must be very enthusiastic and
enjoy teaching beginning and intermediate ASL to hearing children
ages 8 to 16 years old. Prior experience in teaching ASL preferred.

FROM TOTAL COMMUNICATION TO TOTAL CONVERSATION?
During the 1970's, Total Communication was a hot
thing at schools for the deaf (sign language, speech
and lipreading at the same time).
Total Communication has faded away because of bi-bi,
but there is a new name. It is called "Total Conversation."
It is a new name in the Netherlands - a new relay service
that has sign language, text, video and voice.
Total Communication? Will Americans copy this new name?

A NOISY FAX MACHINE

FACT OR FICTION?
DeafDigest editor loves deaf history; he is always reading
up about deaf accomplishments in past years.
This week he came across two tales -
Rocky Stone, before he founded SHHH, which in turn became
HLAA, was a CIA operative, despite his hearing loss, and
was involved with the operations inside Iran during the
seventies
John A DeLance, who passed away in 1974, was written up
in the March 1976 edition of the Deaf American, serving
in the US Army, during World War II. The story said he
served as the first lieutenant and was involved in
scouting missions against the enemy in Alaska.
Fact or fiction? Both men were deaf - Stone was late-deafened
while DeLance, who kept his deafness a secret, attended
North Dakota School for the Deaf.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
The first American patent for a shorthand machine was granted to
Miles Bartholomew in 1879. He continued to make further improvements
to that machine and received another patent in 1884, but his system
never advanced beyond writing one letter per keystroke.
In 1906, inventor and reporter Ward Stone Ireland developed a
shorthand machine using the concept of producing several letters and
even several words with a single keystroke. He obtained his first
patent in 1910 and produced the first stenotype machine, but it
weighed 54 pounds, so it was practical to be used only in a fixed
location. He continued to improve his design, and by 1912 he was
able to produce his fourth stenotype machine, which weighed 8-1/4
pounds.
The key to the success of Ireland's keyboard was that few keys were
used, and he could reduce or eliminate the awkward reaching for
keys. This keyboard design is the one still in use in court
reporting and captioning shorthand machines today.

Did you know that -
Judith Pachiarz, M.D., fought much opposition from people
who felt she cannot attend medical school because of her
deafness. Despite graduating from University of Illinois
with bachelors in microbiology and zoology and with a
doctorate in microbiology and immunology at St. Louis
University, she still was not encouraged to attend
a medical school. Instead she taught veterinary science
at the University of Kentucky during the seventies.
Trying harder and harder she finally was able to enroll
in a medical program - at the University of Louisville
School of Medicine. This meant she was older than the
average medical school student! She finally graduated
in 1983 and has been successful in the medical profession.
Currently she is the pathologist and the transfusion
service director of a medical center in Los Angeles.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Lexington School/Center for the Deaf has appointed
Frank Bowe as its new CEO.
Frank, who is deaf, has advocated rights of
the disabled during the seventies and wrote several books
on these issues. He was the leader in the Section 504
sit-in at the old HEW headquarters in the late seventies.
The sit-in was to spur the HEW get Section 504 written into
regulations, a task the agency had been dragging their feet.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
It has been a long time in coming, but finally
Virginia government has decided to formally close
the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind in
Hampton. It will become a surplus state property on
July 1, 2009.
The school should never have remained in operations
for so many years. There was already another school
in Staunton. For some reason the Virginia government
never could make up their minds - thus dragging
their feet for over 40 years. In the meantime other
southern states quickly made up their minds on merging
their Schools for the Deaf and the Schools for the
Negro Deaf. But not the Virginians until just now!
(editor's note: the state still has not yet decided
on what to do with the surplus campus, which is
growing weeds)

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
We are seeing more stories employees learning sign
language, be it at an airport, or at a department
store, or at a hospital, in an effort to communicate
with the deaf.
This is great - just that if these hearing people have
not seen a deaf person in 10 years and if a deaf person
finally shows up, without warning, is it possible
for these hearing people to quickly remember their
rusty sign language?
Sad to say, no!

An immigrant, whose primary language is not English,
was trying to say something
I thought she said:
did you get tomatoes from this guy?
Tomatoes?
She repeated the same thing over and over
Monitors?
Fortunately, a co-worker overheard the conversation
and explained that the immigrant was trying to say:
did you get binders from this guy?

Description: Professional Responsibilities: The employee must be able to perform these assigned duties without significant risk of substantial harm to his/her own safety/security and the safety/security of others.
The assistant principal is responsible for assisting the chief academic officer in the effective management and operation of programs, personnel, materials, and facilities in order to develop an optimum learning climate for the unique needs of the assigned school program through planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating functions of the overall management and leadership of the school. He/she shall assist in providing an educational program, which is responsive to student needs and one that addresses the goals and objectives of the school within the financial limitations of the schools budget. The following responsibilities reflect the Louisiana Standards for Principals in Louisiana, 1998.
I. Vision
A. Works collaboratively with the school community to develop and maintain a shared school vision B. Brings the school vision to life by using it to guide decision making about students and the instructional program C. Maintains faculty focus on developing learning experiences that will enable students to prosper in subsequent grades and as adults D. QUALIFICATIONS: A Master's degree with a background and experience in the education of the deaf is preferred. Must have at least five years professional educational experience, three of which must have been experience in a school or educational program serving deaf students. Experience at a residential school is preferred.
Must have at least three years of classroom teaching experience with deaf students.
Must meet the certification requirements of the State of Louisiana as a teacher with hearing impaired endorsement and as a school principal. Possession and presentation of Conference of Executives of American Schools for the Deaf/Council on Education of the Deaf (CEASD/CED) certification will satisfy the Louisiana requirement for hearing impaired endorsement on the teaching certificate.
Must possess human relations and management skills with which to develop and maintain a cohesive common purpose faculty and to direct the functions of subordinates.
Preference will be given to applicants possessing sign language skills; others must be willing to learn such skills. The minimum acceptable Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) level for effective job performance is Advanced Plus.
