Are some hearing aids illegal? Yes, according to the Health Professions Council of South Africa! This organization has been warning the public not to buy hearing aids that are sold over the counter at some drug stores! Much strife is taking place at the Tucson branch of the Arizona Schools for the Deaf and Blind. The administration is at odds with the student body, the faculty, the staff and the Deaf Community. Two popular deaf members of the Tucson branch faculty and staff were removed from their duties, thus creating so much opposition. A special meeting was recently postponed, but has been rescheduled for April 30th - yet secrecy shrouds as to location, time and agenda. It is being held in Phoenix, approximately 120 miles away from Tucson! The Special Needs Alliance is an organization of attorneys that specialize in disability and public benefits law. Anyway this organization hosted its first conference. Several deaf attorneys were in attendance. There is a special connection between the deaf and France. There is the Laurent Clerc Museum in La Balme, France. And there is a small statue of Ferdinand Berthier (1803-1886) in Louhans, France. He was a deaf French leader and political activist. And now this in Toulouse, France, a company has come up with sign language videos that would provide the French deaf with daily news. Over 20 such installations are found in public facilities across the nation. .............................................................. A BIG MISTAKE FOR USHER SYNDROME DEAF MAN TO MOVE TO A NEW CITY For deaf people with Usher syndrome that live independently, it is important that they know where the stores are, where the banks are, where the doctors are, where the supermarkets are, etc. One deaf man with Usher syndrome lived in a big city where it was easy for him to walk to these places. Everything was perfect for him. He decided to move to another big city - and he realized his big mistake - it was difficult to do things he was able to do in the past. These places were too far away and the walking became more difficult. A TEXAS INTERPRETING LAW CLARIFICATION This week DeafDigest mentioned requiring licenses for hair cutters but not for interpreters in Texas. A clarification is in order. The Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) is involved, in sort of a way. The BEI has been in effect since 1982, and it certifies qualified sign language interpreters, in which the Texas law never did. This bill will recognize BEI as the testing authority for interpreters seeking licenses. And that interpreters lacking licenses will be penalized by the state Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services. The stronger the teeth, the better! WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being challenged by a hearing client: why should I speak to your deaf client; you're the one that is talking to me for him! if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series We have seen that the right pinky finger depresses the final T, S, D, and Z.  The T and S are in the captioner's home position, but the finger must stretch to depress the D and Z.  Some captioners use wide keys on these letters to simplify the reach.  As we continue to look at blended sounds at the ends of words, we can see that if the pinky finger does not quite reach far enough, there could be some confusion between the "-nt" and "-nd" endings. Some examples of this would be: - She wondered how she was going to meant her broken heart - The fairy waved her magic want. - They tent to forget the details. These should be read as: - She wondered how she was going to mend her broken heart - The fairy waved her magic wand. - They tend to forget the details. Did you know that -- Audree Norton paved the way for future deaf actresses such as Marlee Matlin Shoshonnah Stern, Deanna Bray and others. Audree was a pioneer, a trailblazer. She started out during the early fifties as a TV commercial model, which led to some acting roles later on. With voice overs she performed commercials on TV, touting the Royal Crown Cola soft drink, popular at that time. She had to sip so many of these soft drinks to make it perfect for the TV commercial. As a result, she has hated this soft drink since then, as her preference is Coca Colas! She was outspoken when Hollywood hired hearing actresses to play deaf roles, and the movie moguls did not like her. Yet our deaf actresses nowadays have much to thank her. ..... News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: A Deaf Facial Expression activating an electronic communications tool? This is not a joke as professor Eamon Doherty, not deaf, has seen to it. This Farleigh Dickinson University (NJ) professor has come up with computer gadgets that are activated just by a twitch of one's eyebrow. It is basically designed for the disabled - but who knows, applications can always be modified to meet the needs of the deaf. (editor's note: what has become of this new software? Do not know) ...... News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Gokak Textiles Limited, a factory in Bangalore, India, wishes to hire the deaf as tailors. Their goal is 400 deaf tailors on the factory payroll. They were not able to hire that many deaf tailors. Reason is lack of training and experience in the tailoring profession. ......
