This just in -
The new director of Oregon School for the Deaf is
Sharla Jones. She replaces Patti Togioka who
retired in June.
Top stories about the deaf:
Senator Orin Hatch (UT) opposing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)? Well, he went on a rambling
speech making nasty comments about the CRPD, at the same time
denying he opposes the rights of the deaf and the disabled!
Very puzzling, indeed.
The Ecobank Foundation will be giving the deaf of Uganda seed
money to encourage them to start their own businesses - in
order to provide them with livelhoods.
Asda, a supermarket chain in Great Britain, is on the verge of
making a decision that is making Exeter Royal Deaf Academy
nervous. The academy is hoping to sell its land to Asda
so they could move to a better location. Asda said they are
trying to decide between the Academy land and another piece of land.
How bad is it at Arizona State Schools for the Deaf, at least
on the Tucson campus in view of the unrest over the unpopular
administration? Thirteen staffers have turned in their
retirement papers. And nine staffers have resigned their
positions. And more is to come!
The Economist, a must reading for those in the economics field,
ran a piece saying that CI proliferation is threatening the
existence of deaf sign languages everywhere.

A FUSSY DEAF UNIVERSITY STUDENT IN PARIS
At the deaf school in Paris, the administrator told DeafDigest
editor a story.
They are proud of one of their graduates, who is attending a big
university in France. But that student is fussy.
He refuses French Sign Language interpreters. He also refuses CART
services.
What does he prefer? A notetaker that goes with him to every class
in the university!
Weird? Possibly.

FRENCH SIGN LANGUAGE VERSUS AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE
Which sign language is better - our ASL or their French
Sign Language (FSL)?
Which sign language is more beautiful - our ASL or their
FSL?
Both ASL and FSL are both great and beautiful - but there
is one big difference.
With our ASL, there is a lot of fingerspelling. With FSL
there is zero, or maybe very little fingerspelling!

A STORY IN DAILY MALL
The Daily Mall is British's most popular tabloid newspaper.
Their stories are more "shocking" than what we would read in
the American newspapers.
Anyway, one of their headlines screamed:
Cell transplant could give sight to millions
It said that the University College researchers
have been working on that project that they're optimistic.
Very hopefully this will work for our deaf-blind.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
shortage of interpreters placing burden on the few interpreters around
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
When computer-aided transcription (CAT) was introduced, computers were "taught" to translate the court reporters' steno notes. The court reporters would edit their transcripts and define untranslated or mistranslated words. They were "teaching" the computer to recognize new steno strokes so that the next time that steno stroke was used the computer would properly translate it.
In the 1980s, some court reporters connected their steno machines directly to their personal computers, and realtime translation was born.
Realtime translation instantly translates a court reporter's stenographic notes into English, and the English is displayed on a computer monitor or projection screen.
Court reporters, who previously would have taken possibly two weeks to prepare a transcript, are now allowing people to see how their steno is being instantaneously translated.
Even today, the number of court reporters jumping into realtime continues to grow at a rapid pace.

DeafLaw
A deaf attorney, whom DeafDigest editor will not identify,
recently sent an email with a four letter word.
This matter has been referred to the bar association in the
deaf attorney's home state.
.......
Did you know that -
Lowell J. Myers, a deaf Chicago attorney, gained fame
(and possibly notoriety) for successfully defending deaf
Donald Lang in a murder case during the sixties. Lang
not only was illiterate but knew no sign language. What
was not generally known about Myers was that he achieved
an academic impossibility - earning a bachelors' degree
from one college and a masters from another college -
at the same time! Both colleges realized it and have
established procedures to prevent this from happening
again. Myers passed away few years ago.
.....
News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
While not exactly sign language there is a new book
hitting the bookstores - titled "Field Guide to Gestures."
Perhaps interesting reading for those serious with
sign languages.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
One of the rookies trying to make the Washington Redskins
NFL roster is Reed Doughty, a safety.
He has a hearing loss. The Redskins did not notice it until
just now when the coaches had to repeat their coaching
instructions with him.
(editor's note: Reed is still with the Redskins, but like with
many borderline players, worry about not getting cut this
season)
......
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
The school for the deaf in Paris said they have a number of
its graduates move on to secondary education programs and then
to university-level programs. Yet when asked to give several
examples of its successful graduates, the spokesperson was not
able to do so!
.......
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
Can we read the lips of British people which speak with an
accent much different from ours?
Well, DeafDigest editor was being served in a French cafe
by a waitress. It was learned that she is a British citizen
but has lived in France for nine years. She was chatting
away when DeafDigest editor caught the name of the city
she came from. It was Manchester.
So, is Manchester easy to lipread regardless of the accent
being used?
