Flash - this just in
Matt Hamill knocked out his opponent in 38 seconds
in a bout in Brazil, winning his first fight in
five years! (he was fighting and then retired and
then fighting several times in that time span)
Top stories about the deaf:
On display at the Vigo County museum in Indiana
is Sand Art by deaf sand artist Andrew Clemens.
Glass art is done in glass bottles with different
colors of sand. Very few artists are able to
do this feat.
There are complaints in India that "interpreter-
available" signs posted at voting stations
for convenience of deaf voters are missing these interpreters!
There is a lot of anger at Harvard. This
highly respected university offers ASL
classes but would not recognize ASL as
a foreign language requirement, necessary
for graduation. Harvard is saying reason
is that ASL has no written content.
Is a cochlear implant necessary for success
in life? This was the hot issue in ASL class
at University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Half of the class said yes; other half said no.
One university in Uganda is asking for mandatory
sign language classes for all teachers in all
class rooms, just in the case one student is
deaf.

HOW IMPORTANT IS HANDWRITING?
How important is Deaf Handwriting? Also, how
important is Hearing Handwriting?
Very important! If handwriting is lousy and
hard to read, no matter if it is Deaf Handwriting
or Hearing Handwriting, then communication by
note and pen is dead!

BASEBALL CAP CONFUSION IN WASHINGTON, DC
In Washington, DC, many people wear baseball
caps with the letter G on front.
Letter G. It can be Georgetown University or
George Washington University or Gallaudet University.
Even worse - the design, the color, and the logo on
these three different universities are almost the same.
From a distance, if you see a cap with G, it is
hard to know which university it is!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
People who become court reporters, broadcast captioners, and CART captioners come from many different backgrounds. Some go to court reporting school immediately after high school, but there are increasing numbers of people in the profession who have followed other paths to get there.
There are some who have bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and even PhDs and other advanced degrees who have decided that their real love is realtime captioning or court reporting. They have returned to court reporting school and learned steno theory and practiced in order to achieve their goal.
Even for people with advanced degrees, becoming a court reporter or a realtime captioner takes a lot of practice. In order to achieve their goals faster, people with great determination may write on their steno machines all day in school and then go home in the evening and practice some more. Others may be attending an online school and practice throughout the day. Some very determined people end up spending more than eight hours a day practicing in order to increase their speed.
The faster one achieves the high speeds necessary to graduate from a court reporting program, the quicker he or she will be able to achieve the goal of being a CART captioner, broadcast captioner, or a court reporter.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Who knows some day, just like general
practice physicians going out of fashion,
we may find general practice interpreters
following suit?
A new association has surfaced recently
and it is the IMIA, which is fully spelled
out as International Medical Interpreters
Association.
We have legal-trained interpreters; now
we are having medical-trained interpreters.
Some day we will find a new organization
called ISIA which is spelled out in full
as International Sports Interpreters
Association. And another new association
of specialty-trained interpreters and
yet another one. And so on.
Meaning we just cannot call a surgeon
"just a doctor." The same goes for our
interpreters of the future?
editor's note:
Are we seeing this happening nowadays?

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
The feud in Indiana between parents that support parental
choice for deaf children and supporters of Indiana
School for the Deaf is not just going away quietly.
Dispute has flared up again this week.
