DR MARSTERS AND THE TTY MACHINE Dr. James Marsters, who died few weeks ago, was written up in many hearing newspapers. They said he was involved with the first TTY machine in 1964. Weitbrecht was already using his Radio Ham TTY machine to communicate with other hearing Radio Hams from 1940's to 1960's. Marsters and Weitbrecht did not know each other before a friend introduced them. Marsters was a frustrated dentist, not able to use voice phone to communicate with his hearing patients. With Marsters' encouragement, Weitbrecht converted a Radio Ham modem to a Deaf TTY modem in 1964. Marsters and another deaf partner founded a company that manufactured Deaf TTY modems. DeafDigest editor had the unfortunate experience of being confronted by an angry police officer recently. He was shouting something behind the editor's back, and thinking he was being ignored, became "in your face" confrontational. And when the officer was told of the deafness, he simply spoke even faster and faster. Nothing ugly came out of it, though, but a formal protest was filed with the appropriate authorities. Come to think of it, it seems that almost every single deaf person, just at least once in his life, have had an ugly confrontation with the police! This is, indeed, so unfortunate and so unnecessary. SENATOR EDWARD KENNEDY AND THE DEAF Senator Edward M Kennedy has departed us. Has he ever been involved with the deaf? DeafDigest does not think so, but he did receive a letter from a deaf man in connection with the assassination of his older brother John F. who served as our president. Virgil (Ed) Hoffman, a deaf man, claimed to have witnessed the shooting and wanted to share the information with the Secret Service but got nowhere. He then wrote a letter to Sen. Kennedy, who then sidestepped the issue, saying the Warren Commission report put a closure to this case. ................................................................ Their tasks include taking their students to the office of the school nurse, or going to the bookstore to help them purchase books. Should the CART provider interrupt the speaker? The CART provider's job in a classroom is to provide equal access. Sometimes a student or teacher may be mumbling, and no one in the room can hear or understand everything that is being said. The hearing people might only be getting the gist of what is being said because they are missing words here and there. It is the CART provider's job to communicate that information to the CART consumer. Sometimes a student who is very shy or has a foreign accent is called upon to answer a question, and he or she is unsure of the answer. The student may intentionally mumble or speak very softly or unclearly because they are very nervous and really don't want everyone in the class to hear what they have to say. Interrupting that student might make the student even more flustered and make it more difficult for them to speak in front of the class. He slipped and fell down and got hurt. News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: The Homecoming Day football game at Alabama School for the Deaf will be something special - deaf skydiver Billy Vance will parachute down on the football field just before the kickoff. While parachuting down, an American flag will be attached to the landing gear. It is believed that this stunt is a historic first. The date of the jump is September 11th. .. News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Do we have big time collegiate jocks that care about the deaf? Hope so, but we have at least one - Jordan Steffy, a promising freshman QB with the University of Maryland football team, is it. As a high school student Jordan knew of a deaf student that suffered seizures. Not willing to let it go, he hit on his fellow students at a high school basketball game, collecting $1,200 in donations. The money was then earmarked towards deaf student's operation. University of Maryland is in the backyard of Washington, DC which has a large deaf population. Hmmmm! (editor's note: injuries prevented Steffy from achieving his football potential; he has since then graduated and have moved on) .... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: Nike, the popular sports shoe company, swims in billions of dollars per year. Nike also has a deaf employee that helps design shoes. Nike pleads poverty as an excuse for turning down the deaf designer's interpreter requests. .. A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's great news: a former Cy Young winner, who now works as a professor and operates a baseball school, sends you email giving career advice for your customer. Working knowledge of and experience with strategic planning and budget. Working knowledge of educational, psychological, social, cultural and vocational aspects of deafness. Experience in program development. Demonstrated ability to collect, organize, synthesize, analyze and present information clearly. Excellent communication skills.
