Top stories about the deaf:
If a person has a Usher syndrome gene, then he may need to know
what causes it - before deciding to go for a CI or to reject CI.
This was the issue raised in a deaf medical posting.
We, the deaf, buy a lot of stuff through Amazon.com. You would
think Amazon would be so grateful that they would happily provide
captions on the internet. Wrong, and as a consequence a listing
of deaf organizations have filed a formal complaint with the FCC.
The Guardian, the national newspaper of Great Britain, has been
praised for being deaf-friendly with its deaf stories. Yet on
the other hand, this newspaper has been accused of errors in
its deaf news and being too slow to make corrections. This is what
a group of deaf activists is accusing the newspaper!
Wales, a nation within the United Kingdom, is conducting a drive
for scans to detect diabetes. A deaf Welsh woman asked for an
interpreter during the scan and was turned down. Yet this same
scanning center accused the deaf woman's children for not
interpreting for her during the tests!
There is much unrest in United Kingdom over the government's
plan to reduce the benefits for the deaf and the disabled
(same as our SSDI). Several parliamentarians are joining
the battle, wanting to see that the deaf keep their benefits.

A FRUSTRATED DEAF ENGINEER
A deaf man earned a degree in engineering at a hearing
university. He had no luck finding a good job in engineering,
and was forced to work in low paying jobs.
He said:
Communications is the problem. Engineers work together as a
team and they communicate all the time. They won't write
on paper for me or use gestures with me.

DEAF PERSON A REAL FRIEND OR NOT A REAL FRIEND?
At a workplace, a deaf person and a hearing person
are friends. The deaf person taught the hearing person
sign language so they both can communicate.
But away from work, the deaf person avoids the hearing
person. Even at parties, the deaf person avoids the
hearing person.
The frustrated hearing person at the party tries to
talk to the deaf person. But the deaf person, with eyes
shifting, tries to get away from the hearing person.
But at the work place, everything is fine. Why?

A SERIOUS PROBLEM IN BRITISH DEAF HOMES
Many deaf homes in Great Britain do not have alerting devices.
As a result, many deaf residents leave front doors unlocked,
or at least place a chain on the latch so that visitors can
flash the inside light switch.
Hearing burglars know it - and as a result there have been
a large number of break-ins.
The police is working with the local deaf leaders to try to
solve this problem.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being asked:
do you follow your deaf client all day even when you are not on interpreting duty?
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As we begin 2013, it is the time of year when many people make New
Year's resolutions. For some court reporters, CART providers, and
realtime captioners, their resolutions are to practice their steno
writing so that they can increase their speed and accuracy.
Some people look at captioners as if they were machines. They might
think that all realtime captioners write the same way. But that is
not true.
Writing on a steno machine is a skill that must be developed and
worked at. You must practice it and stay in shape in the same way
someone must follow an exercise program for their body.
There are dictation drills and finger exercises that increase your
dexterity and speed. Students who are studying steno must learn to
reduce hesitation and increase their ability to concentrate for long
periods of time.
Just like people who exercise their body, people practicing on the
steno machine should keep a positive outlook and look to the future
for the goals they want to achieve. Above all else, they should try
to make it fun and something they enjoy doing, so that they will
stick with their new "exercise program" in the coming year.
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
being asked by an angry hearing person:
why cannot you read my lips?
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The Kuhn Triplets (Chris, Craig and Curt) are at it again.
These triplets generated much publicity while playing sports at
Illinois School for the Deaf and at Gallaudet University.
Now this just in - Men's Health Magazine, February issue,
page 55 featured a Belly Barometer. It is a contest waged among
the triplets - these checkpoints in exercises, diet and
lifestyle. Points are awarded for the best performance in each
category. And at the end, Craig won, and with it, his picture
in the story.
The most interesting aspect of this article was that no
mention was made of triplets' deafness. Men's Health ashamed
to mention deafness at all?
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
What are the odds of a deaf-theme film winning
the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University 2008 Awards
for broadcast journalism?
In the case of the film "Through Deaf Eyes,"
it was 40 to 1 odds. 510 films were submitted
and only 13 were selected for the awards.
Filmmaker Diane K. Garey will be receiving
the honors in January.
......
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
For those that love hockey (NHL) they are heartbroken over
the second player strike in seven years. It is a case of
strike leaders not willing to compromise, and taking on this
"I must win the argument" stance.
It has happened to a major organization of the deaf years
back. That major organization was never the same because of
an on-going disagreement between the #1 person and the #2 person.
The #2 person left; the major organization continues to
suffer the consequences though the dispute took place
in the late seventies!
The #1 and the #2 person, by the way, have departed us.
.......
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
A pregnant deaf woman thought her hearing friend asked, while
pointing at her stomach:
what germ is it?
The hearing friend actually asked:
what term is it?
