Top stories about the deaf:

The Matsusaka-shi legislative body in Japan,
in the Mie Prefecture, has accepted sign
language as an official language for deaf
residents.

A complaint by a newspaper in Pakistan - it said:
Pakistan has far too many people who are hearing-impaired

The Hear My Voice conference took place in Dubai in hopes
of raising public awareness on what hearing loss is all
about.

The New York Post is reminding us of the Joy of
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, stressing that it was
the best piece of music ever - and that he composed
it while totally deaf.

Pakistan Sign Language is being digitalized into a DVD
by an agency serving the deaf in this nation.

A SURPRISE FINGERSPELLING AT STARBUCKS
A deaf person goes to the same Starbucks place
for a long time. The staff knows him, knows his
favorite coffee and knows his habits.
Suddenly one morning, one of the staff people,
beautifully fingerspelled -

how do you want your coffee?

It was a surprise because the staff member never
fingerspelled. And she also beautifully signed
thank you.
Did that person know signs for a long time but
hid it from the deaf person? Or did that person
attend sign language classes recently?

A TALE OF TWO DEAF SONS OF TWO BIG MANUFACTURERS
Why are some deaf people successful in moving up
the job ladder while other some deaf people are not
successful?
It may be just one word - attitude. One deaf son,
after graduating from college, was hired by his
father. He told the son to start at the bottom and
to learn his way up. He did - and many years later
he is the company vice president.
Another deaf son, after graduating from college,
told his father he must start at the top and said
he did not go to college to learn how to sweep the
factory floors. To this day, this deaf son is still
jobless, after many years.
Very important for deaf people to have good
attitudes.

CANADA STILL NOT GETTING FULL DEAF 911 TEXT SERVICES
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission

This deadline is being met in some provinces but not in
other provinces.
Deaf leaders in Canada are not too happy about it.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

With the start of a new year quickly approaching, we find
many people making resolutions to improve their lives and
the lives of others in 2014.

For some court reporters, CART providers, and realtime
captioners, their resolutions are to practice their steno
writing so that they can increase their speed and accuracy.

Some people look at captioners as if they were machines. They
might think that all realtime captioners write the same
way. But that is not true.

Writing on a steno machine is a skill that must be developed
and worked at. You must practice it and stay in shape in the
same way someone must follow an exercise program for their
body.

There are dictation drills and finger exercises that increase
your dexterity and speed. Students who are studying steno must
learn to reduce hesitation and increase their ability to concentrate
for long periods of time.

Just like people who exercise their body, people practicing on
the steno machine should keep a positive outlook and look to the
future for the goals they want to achieve. Above all else, they
should try to make it fun and something they enjoy doing so that
they will stick with their new "exercise program" in the coming year.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

difficulty in making airline and train connections because of
changes announced on the PA system which is not also being
shown on display boards!

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw

Delanie Harrington, deaf student at Poway HS in
California, has won a partial victory in her battle
to get her classes captioned on CART. It is partial
because the judge granted temporary, not permanent,
injunction.

.......

Did you know that -

Morris Davis was one of the world's best race walkers during
the thirties, winning over 150 medals, including the 1935
Amateur Athletic Union 15km national championship, and holding
one world record for the fastest 25 mile walk. That was not
all - he continued race walking through six decades, and at
the age of 78, finished 17th out of 54 walkers in a 1976
race, competing against walkers young enough to be his
grandchildren! In the New York deaf community, he was
known as the "famous deaf walker".

.....

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Will we be seeing a new phrase "Deaf Fiberal" real soon?
The phrase "Fiberal" was coined by New Democrats in the
Ontario legislature, accusing the Liberals of fibbing, hence
the Fiberals.
Deaf Fiberal? Hmm. People who lie about many things -
ie Sign Language is bad; lip reading will catch every
spoken word; every orally-trained deaf person is capable
of Perfect Speech, etc, etc.

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Jingjing Pan is a deaf student, so special at RIT. She plays
the piano and was featured in a recent Rochester newspaper story.
She has been perfecting her techniques with the piano for the
past five years under tutelage of music tutors.

......

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

a newspaper ran a story of a deaf man, who never learned signs
all his life, had no friends, led an isolated life, and had
great hopes after getting a CI. After the operation, he was
devastated to find out that he was just as deaf as ever.

Very sad!

.......

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

I thought a fellow employee said:
I am in a dizzy because I think the boss will fire me

in a dizzy about being fired? That sentence makes no sense

the fellow employee actually said:
I am in a tizzy because I think the boss will fire me

(tizzy means worried or upset or confused)
