Top stories about the deaf:
There was a story about toy companies becoming more
sensitive to the needs of the deaf, and disabled
children, making toys that they can enjoy playing
with.
Do deaf sports fans write a book on history of
their favorite professional sports teams?
Years ago, one did - Ralph LinWeber wrote a book
on history of Toledo MudHens minor league baseball
team. And now this - Chris Gardner, a deaf British
soccer fan wrote a book on his beloved minor league
soccer team - the Forest Green Rovers. In a special
ceremony, the team honored him for publishing this
book.
Geeta, the young deaf woman, accidentally strayed
over to the India-Pakistan border and stayed in
Pakistan for about 12-13 years. After being returned
to India, she started searching for her real family.
A year later, she is nowhere closer to finding her
family members. At any rate she is now considered
a full fledged citizen of India.
A deaf teenager fought a one-man battle with
Sky, a big British telecommunications provider,
and won. He was upset when programs were not
captioned - and took issue with Sky. After
several months, Sky relented and agreed to
put in captions.
The banks have been warned to must make their
ATMs and Websites Accessible. Yet for
reasons of their own, they have ignored
these warnings, especially TD Ameritech.

DEAF UNEASY WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE
You are deaf and you go to the same barber,
the same Starbucks, the same bank for a long
time.
These people know you and respect you as a
customer, no matter that you are deaf.
But if you go to a different barber, a
different Starbucks and a different bank,
then you feel little nervous.
These people do not know you and may not
know what to do with you because of your
deafness. This is why you are nervous.

Lip reading tale
A hearing friend was explaining a plot of land
with his deaf friend
The deaf person thought hearing person said:
this land is a more
The hearing person actually said:
this land is a moor
(moor is an old fashioned word meaning land that
cannot be farmed for crops; no one really uses
that word any more)

A BIG DEAF EMBARRASSMENT AT A BANK
A deaf person, carrying a big jar of coins, went to a
bank coin counting machine. He poured these coins in the
machine and waited for it to be counted.
Several pennies were "stubborn" and could not go through
the coin machine. The deaf person then poured these same
rejected pennies into machine 4 or 5 times. The machine
still refused to accept these few pennies.
As a result, there was so much noise from the clanking
of these rejected pennies. Everyone at the bank looked at
the deaf person, who did not know about the noise.
The bank manager walked over to the deaf person and asked
him to stop with these rejected pennies.
Very embarrassing!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Captioning is being offered at more and more "live" events across the country and around the world. In addition to the television broadcast of sporting events, you will find some sports stadiums now offer captioning of what is going on within the stadium.
When a referee makes a call that the audience can hear, that is being captioned. When a song is sung, that is being captioned. When the crowd is cheering or booing, that is being captioned. Captioning helps people fully participate in the experience.
Some colleges and universities are now providing captioning for graduations and sporting events. The captioning may be displayed on screens in the auditorium or stadium, on the Web for live viewing, or possibly sent to handheld devices.
People with a hearing loss who would benefit from captioning at sporting or entertainment events, conventions, conferences, or other public gatherings can make the request of the planners of these events to provide captioning. Sometimes it is just a matter of educating people about what captioning is, the technology that is available, and the importance of providing these services.
