Dedication:
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to
Ron Emerson, Houston, TX, that departed us.
He was a role model in among the deaf people
of color in the Houston, TX and Washington, DC
communities. He graduated from Prairie
View A&M University with a degree in
Accounting. He worked as an accountant
for many years at George Washington
University, while at the same time,
holding a full time job at MSSD on
the Gallaudet campus.
He played basketball one season at Prairie
View A&M, and while he was rarely used by
the coach, he was a fan favorite. In a game
that was a blow out, the coach will would
not use him. It took a stadium-full screaming
by fans to force the coach to put Ron
into the game.
He grew up an oralist, knowing nothing
about ASL. It was basketball with deaf
Houston teams that exposed him to ASL,
a language he fully embraced for the
rest of his life! And in which it enhanced
his career at MSSD.
Top stories about the deaf:
ADA is now 28 years old and retired Iowa senator
Tom Harkin, the father of ADA, celebrated it
by teaching the Democratic delegates the
sign for the word - America.
We had Sesame Street TV series for years,
and it was an educational tool for deaf
children. Australia is coming up with
its own version of Sesame Street. It
debuted this week.
The Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing has opened a new demonstration
room for people wanting to know what
assistive devices is all about.
The Governor Baxter School for the Deaf
which is a state funded school, is now
allowed to raise private funds. It was
part of a new state law.
Deaf dogs moved to a prison! Well, there
was a bad fire in California that threatened
a kennel that held deaf dogs. For their
safety, these deaf dogs were moved to
a prison as temporary shelter. It is
understood that inmates were thrilled to
be taking care of them.

A DEAF SEATING ADVANTAGE OR DISADVANTAGE
Sometimes deaf leaders, before a big deaf meeting
starts, would argue about where to pick seats around
a large conference table.
Do they seat next to the organization president?
Or do they seat across the organization president?
Or do they seat away from their enemies? Etc, Etc.
Hearing people also argue about seating. The same as
with the deaf!

Lip reading tale
A hearing person was bragging with a deaf friend.
Deaf friend thought he said:
I am a Kentucky kermel
Kernel?
He actually said:
I am a Kentucky Colonel
(for some weird reason, the word colonel
is pronounced the same as kernel!)

A STRANGE CI RESEARCH
Some research assignments are strange. In India, the
Defense Research and Development Organization is supposed
to research better ways to make the Army stronger (weapons,
missiles, computer technology, etc).
Well, the government of India told this agency to do
a strange research.
What was that research? To find ways to make CI cheaper
for the deaf!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Most people reading this newsletter are probably aware of this, but many people in this country still do not know that the vast majority of realtime captioning on television is done by people who are using the skills of a court reporter.
The National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) is the organization that represents judicial reporters and broadcast and CART captioners across the country.
Members of NCRA are meeting in Chicago from August 4th through the 7th for their 2016 Annual Convention and Exposition with the theme of "You are the Architect of your Future."
The schedule will be jam-packed with educational sessions, the latest in new products and services showcased on the Expo Hall floor, and an array of networking opportunities that cannot be found anywhere else. There will also be specialized programs for students and instructors, as well as a two-day Certified Realtime Captioner Workshop.
Speed and realtime contests will be held to showcase the talents of some of the best steno writers in our business.
Because people in the broadcast television industry and the business world will still continue to need our services, there will probably be some captioning and remote CART provided from hotel rooms in the Hilton Chicago, where the convention is taking place.
So when you watch your favorite live television show this week, you might wonder where that captioner is. Could he or she be in a hotel room looking out over Lake Michigan?

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Do nation's best deaf poker players come from
NTID? Well, NTID boasts of two poker champions -
Jonathan Rollins, class of 1993, who just won the
deaf poker championship in Nevada.
And there is tennis-playing Joe Neely who won
another deaf poker tournament in Connecticut last
month. Tennis? Joe holds the RIT record for most
doubles wins in one season (13 wins in 2002)
that he shares with deaf doubles partner
Luke Faxon-St. Georges.
(editor's note: Joe Neely has tragically
departed us, smiling at his fellow poker
players from upstairs)

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for Wireless
Technologies published results of weather and emergency
warnings survey that the deaf and the disabled were asked
to take part in. The conclusion was a hint that the deaf and
the disabled need to have their communications equipment
upgraded on a regular basis because of rapidly changing
technological times.
(editor's note: this story appeared five years ago,
yet turtle-like progress has been made with the
911-text technology. We need to check again in
another five years to check on the progress)
