She served GLAD as CEO for 24 years before retiring. It was not just the Los Angeles deaf community that she served but also of the statewide deaf community. Since California is divided into 8 regions, with a deaf social service agency serving each region, she was instrumental in getting the state legislators continue with money to fund these deaf agencies. She was so well known among these legislators in Sacramento that they warmly embraced her each time she stepped foot in their quarters! GLAD has posted a photograph in her memory on the web site. It is at: http://www.gladinc.org/ .. We all know that Judge Sonia Sotomayor has been nominated by President Obama to be the next Supreme Court Justice. Does she have any deaf-related links in her past? Sort of, but perhaps not really. She ruled against a deaf attorney in an appeals case. And while she sat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, there was a deaf clerk on that court, but not under her but for a different judge. That deaf clerk used the CART and so, Judge Sotomayor may have noticed it on a frequent basis. What does the losing deaf attorney have to say about her appointment? He said: I'm not aware of any significant disability rights opinions good or bad that she's written, so I can't comment on any predictions in that regard. That being said, she does have a strong record on civil rights in general. Usually, if a nominee is strong on civil rights, they are strong on disability rights as well .. A Purple Heart, 66 years later has been awarded John Gale, age 93, Haverhill, MA, for deafness he suffered during combat duty in World War II. Why 66 years? He said: I didn't want to bother He does not remember exactly what happened during the War that caused him to go deaf. .. Your Single Source for Assistive Technology ................................................................ ................................................................ GARBAGE IS MONEY Garbage smells awful, but it is money for some deaf schools and some deaf service agencies. At some big events (Indianapolis 500, Kentucky Derby, Talladega 500, etc), deaf groups come to clean up garbage. Money from the garbage goes to deaf groups. So, when hearing people complain that garbage smells bad, it smells sweet for the deaf! - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/video-garbage/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) AN INTERNET RELAY NIGHTMARE This is a nightmare. You have problems with cable internet service. You contact the cable company through internet relay to ask for assistance. The service representative advises you to disconnect the router and then to reconnect it and to let him know if it works. It is hard to explain to the customer service representative that if you disconnect the router, the relay call is disconnected. You explain this to him - and he does not believe you because he thinks you are using the TTY machine to contact him through the relay! This is a nightmare. - for ASL News version, please click on: http://deafdigest.com/videos/video-relaynightmare/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) BEING A DEAF NIGHTCLUB HOSTESS IN TOKYO Rie Saito is a deaf woman who lives in Tokyo and her job is a night club hostess. She does not speak at all. Instead she uses her pen and pad to communicate with patrons that enter the night club. She does not want to make it her lifetime job. She wants to go back to school to find a job working with disabled people. DEAFNESS IN A 10-GENERATION ALL-HEARING FAMILY TREE Let us take a typical 10-generation, all-hearing family tree, consisting of hundreds and hundreds of family members, past and present. Will we find deaf members? Good question. Maybe yes, maybe no. The stats are saying that 1-2 percent of people are deaf. If we have 200 members in a family tree, will we find maybe 2 or 4 of them that are deaf? NO ACCESSIBILITY AT INDOOR FOOTBALL GAME Indoor professional football is becoming popular in USA. DeafDigest editor watched an indoor football game between DC Armor and Reading Express (American Indoor Football Association). Program books, containing numbers of the players, were handed out to all fans. The listed uniform numbers were wrong. There was no way for a deaf fan to follow the announcements by the public address announcer. And the scoreboard only showed the game score and the time remaining. Hearing fans, listening to the announcer, would know who the players were on the field. Not so with the deaf fans! Inaccessible? Yes. Violation of ADA regulations? Just let this be handled by the attorneys if such a lawsuit takes place. ................................................................ HEARING PEOPLE IN THE MINORITY? Are the hearing people in the minority? This was the issue raised by a newspaper in the Philippines. At first glance, this question looks ridiculous. But when we stop and think about it, more and more older people lose their hearing - and while they continue to function as hearing, they are theoretically becoming deaf. Hence, this Filipino statement in a newspaper article. MANY FAMOUS PEOPLE HAVE A LINK WITH THE DEAF - Renee Zellweger, famous movie star her real life connection is not known; her on-screen connection was a scene in the movie "Jerry Maguire" where she catches a deaf couple signing to each other, and actor Tom Cruise, playing as Jerry Maguire, was puzzled. She explained to him that she knew signs because of deaf member in her family. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? complained an interpreter: a team member coming into our interpreting assignment unprepared. I do my homework and get myself prepared for the assignment, but the other interpreter is lazy if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Many captioning companies require that their realtime captioners pass tests with at least a 98% accuracy rate in order to go on the air. Many of the excellent realtime captioners working today strive for accuracy rates of 99% or better. However, more and more captioners are coming into the field who are captioning with much lower rates. Some newer technologies are being used where the accuracy may only be 85% to 90%. It may sound like that is a pretty good percentage, but if you think about it, that would be 10 to 15 wrong words in every 100 words. With that accuracy rate, the captioning can almost be not understandable. If you see error rates that are more than one or two errors for every 100 words, please let people know about it. Don't assume that someone else will complain about it. In order to maintain excellent captioning, we have to let the people who are paying for the captioning know that there are people watching the captions who care about the quality. ................................................................ ................................................................ weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://www.deafdigest.com updated every Monday ................................................................ ................................................................ Crash course on the Digital Television Transition This is a continuation of our weekly educational column on addressing concerns about the analog TV shutoff and the final transition to digital TV which is scheduled to occur on or before June 12, 2009. Question this week: I use an indoor TV antenna and it works great during the day. It goes bad at night. What's going on? Answer: It sounds like you're using a low gain antenna (rabbit ears) which is susceptible to noise caused by CFL light bulbs. It seems that when you turn these bulbs on at night, it causes interference for the antenna. Household appliances, computers, and video displays can also cause interference. You would need an antenna with an amplifier which will make it strong enough to fight the interference. Another option is to use a large outdoor antenna. For information about various antennas, check this link: http://www.hdtvantennalabs.com/ More Questions? Hot DeafNews boring, but important! A would-be hard of hearing firefighter has filed a $1.0 mil lawsuit against the Newport Beach, California municipal government. He was offered a job as a firefighter but the offer was rescinded when the local government officials learned he was hard of hearing. This is the basis of the lawsuit. .. The Deaf and the Law IDEA is a law; it is spelled out as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. It deals with how states and public agencies that offer a variety of services to disabled, the deaf included, children. Why is this law reauthorized from time to time? Because it was PL 94-142, a separate law of several parts. And the Congress will change their spending priorities from time to time - hence the need to reauthorize to make sure funds stop going to old programs and go to newer programs. Complicated? Yes! .. News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Many small movie houses, unable to withstand competition from these huge multi-screen movie "stadiums", go out of business. One such movie house, The Palace, in Seguin, TX did - but this closing may benefit the Deaf Community in the San Antonio, Austin and San Marcos areas! The Palace owner has consented to letting David Pierce, of Davideo Productions, use the theater, already outfitted with 35mm projectors, for captioned films, Deaf films, subtitled foreign movies and silent classics from time to time. ....
