UNITED STATES:

Sex education videos in ASL

The Planned Parenthood of Delaware (PPDE) has launched a new series of sex education videos made for Deaf middle and high school students. These videos are in American Sign Language (ASL), and help to educate Deaf students of important topics such as consent, body image, birth control, STIs, and sexual identity. This project was supported by funding from Planned Parenthood Federation of America and aims to fill a significant gap in educational resources for the Deaf and hard of hearing community.

AUSTRALIA:

Study confirms Deaf are vulnerable

Domestic violence against people with disabilities is a serious issue in the country, with 40% of women with disabilities experiencing physical violence after age 15, compared to 26% of women without disabilities. A study that was released by Victoria University recently showed that Deaf women are especially at risk, being twice as likely to face domestic violence as hearing women. Reports of physical and sexual abuse are up to 20 times higher for Deaf individuals. The study says that abusers often take advantage of their victim's deafness to make them more vulnerable, harder to report the abuse, and less believable.

MALAYSIA:

Deaf organization demands justice

An alleged assault of a Deaf e-hailing driver on 28th May has drawn strong condemnation and demands for justice from a Deaf organization - the Malaysian Deaf Advocacy and Wellbeing Organization (DAWN). The incident involving the Crown Prince of Johor - Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim as the alleged assailant, led to a thorough police investigation that included statements from various witnesses, including the victim and hotel staff. However, despite this and the completion of the investigation on 5th June, concerns have arisen over delays in prosecuting the case, prompting DAWN to call for immediate action from the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
