- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Paul Steven Miller,
a disabled attorney that specialized in disability
right law. He departed us so recently.

Not deaf, his death is a big loss for the disability,
the deaf included, community. Said a deaf attorney who
had often been in touch with Stevens over the years:

Professor Miller's passing is an enormous loss to the deaf community.
Not only was he a strong and committed fighter for disability rights in
general, he was very active in trying to get people with disabilities
(including deaf folks) appointed in high positions in the Obama
Administration.  The deaf and disability communities have lost a huge
advocate--a giant, if you will.

DEAF IN POLITICS
Election Day is coming up soon. Who will win -
Democrats or Republicans? We will wait and find out.
Are the deaf people involved in politics? Yes,
for some of them.
We have few deaf people that won elections; we also
have a few deaf people that ran for office but lost.
And we have had deaf representatives at Democratic
and Republican national conventions.
What about deaf political clubs? We had a few, but
these clubs closed because of lack of interest.

TIRED OF TRAINING
A new CI does not make a deaf person hearing in
few minutes. Same thing with a new hearing aid.
When a person gets a CI or a hearing aid, they
must go to training classes to learn how to use it.
Many deaf people go to training classes for few
weeks and give up because they are tired of it.
So, is a new CI or a new hearing aid worth it
for these deaf people?
It all depends.

A GREETING CARD COMPANY IN IDAHO
Itty Bitty Witty Knitties is a greeting card company
in Idaho. It came up with a twist in the hiring of
the deaf - in China.
The factory in China worked with a service agency
to hire the deaf to make greeting cards for the Idaho
company.
We often read about labor in the Third World, making
stuff for American companies - but do we read about these
companies hiring the deaf?
Not really, except for the Idaho company.

A STOPWATCH IN A CLASSROOM
A deaf student, attending a college in Michigan, was
frustrated with insufficient accommodations the administration
was giving him because of his deafness.
To prove a point, he used a stopwatch in one class. When that class ended, he came up with this conclusion:

- 55 percent of time the hearing students were in discussions
- 45 percent of time the professor was lecturing

He wanted to convince the college to give him a CART;
the college wouldn't.

INTERPRETERS BECOMING DEAF
Do we have interpreters that have become deaf?
Yes, a few of them. They were born hearing, but
became deaf over the years. While they were hearing,
they were interpreters. And they have continued
as interpreters, just that they have become a
CDI (Certified Deaf Interpreter).
Said one CDI, who was an ex-hearing interpreter:

there are several issues involved in this switch;
some adjust easily to the switch while others
have adjustment problems

PASSING THROUGH AND THEN SETTLING IN
DeafDigest editor knows of a deaf couple from
years ago. They lived for a long time in a major
West Coast city, pretty much part of the city's
Deaf Community.
Taking a vacation, they toured USA, and stopped
at a medium sized city, some 2,500 miles away.
Despite not knowing anyone in that Deaf Community,
they mingled at deaf events and made a few friends.
Suddenly, that was it. They decided to move
to that medium sized city. Even their deaf daughter
was puzzled - especially because of their lack of
community ties.
Why did they settle in a strange new city,
2,500 miles away? May be something that appealed
to them - services provided by social service
agency or deaf club activities or ease in making
new friends, etc, etc?

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being constantly given this "third party" comment like this -

tell him that.......

or

tell her this......

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

"Why do you have to hit all of those keys at the same time to make
such a simple word come up?  Wouldn't it just be easier to type on a
regular keyboard one letter at a time?"

Being a CART provider, I have heard these kinds of questions many
times.  Yes, it might be "easier" to type one letter at a time, but
if CART providers and captioners did that, there would be no way that
they could develop the speed that they need to provide realtime
translation for the different events and broadcasts where captioning
and CART are provided.

Using a standard QWERTY keyboard, the fastest typists can sometimes
get up to around 120 words per minute.  It is more common for good
typists to average 60 to 80 words per minute.

The standard rate of speech for most people is around 160 to 180
words per minute.  Many speakers consistently average over 200 words
per minute.

As you can see from these numbers, if someone is using a standard
keyboard and trying to type one letter at a time, even the best of
typists cannot keep up with most speakers.

However, using the steno keyboard, someone can keep up with most
speakers.  In order to be certified by the National Court Reporters
Association as a Registered Professional Reporter, which is the
entry-level test for court reporters, someone must pass a test on
testimony material at 225 words per minute.

If you can write at 225 words per minute rather than 100 words per
minute, you will be able to do a much better job of keeping up with
speakers in today's rapid-paced world.

DEGREES OF DIFFICULTIES
What is the difference between a mild hearing loss, a moderate
hearing loss, a severe hearing loss and a profound hearing loss?

- Mild may have problems with conversation in noisy places
- Moderate may have problems if not wearing hearing aids
- Severe may lipread and use sign language even with CI or hearing aids
- Profound may be the same as severe except their hearing loss is higher

to retaliate against a deaf employee, not only by not accommodating

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Deaf attorney Leonard Hall has tossed his hat in the ring
for the vacancy on the state Court of Appeals in the state of
Kansas. He will have to fight it out against 21 other applicants
for that sole vacancy.
Leonard is the Assistant City Attorney in Olathe, Kansas.

(editor's note: He did not make it, and stayed with his
city attorney job until he retired last year to go into
private practice, specializing in real estate and business
zoning law)

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Gallaudet started football in 1883; Gallaudet had
to wait until 2005 to achieve the first unbeaten
season ever.
Gallaudet defeated University of North Carolina-
Greensboro 51-0 on Saturday to clinch an unbeaten
season.
Much kudos to coach Ed Hottle, the team and the
coaching staff for making the unbeaten season dream
possible.

(editor's note: the students waited until the team
bus arrived on the campus at 2 AM to celebrate the
unbeaten season by tearing down the goal posts,
an act the Gallaudet administration, at that time, did not approve. Times have changed since then)

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

It pays to break the law and to go to jail?

As a result, deaf workers from the service
agency lost their jobs, despite being law-abiding
citizens!

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

Easy to lipread "sixth" and "eighth"

Actually she said "eighth"
