Peter Seiler, a veteran educator and administrator,
will be wearing a new hat, come July 1st.
He will be retiring from Kansas School for the Deaf
and move to Nebraska to start a new position as executive
director of the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing.
This is not his first foray into the state of
Nebraska. He formerly served as an administrator at
the now-closed Nebraska School for the Deaf.
This time, he will be working out of an office in
Lincoln, not in Omaha.

David Souter, the Supreme Court justice, is retiring.
How and to what extent would his replacement impact on
the ADA regulations (interpret it strictly according
to the language or interpret it loosely?
A deaf attorney put it this way:
Souter was only moderately liberal. He came down the
wrong way on a few ADA cases, If Obama replaces
him with someone who is really liberal, then it could
potentially impact the court.

A HEARING AID BRIBE
Almost all bribes involve money. But a hearing aid
bribe?
Yes, it took place in Florida three years ago.
A political group wanted state legislators to pass
a bill for them.
This political group bribed state legislators
with free hearing aids. It did not matter if legislators
were hearing or deaf.
125 legislators accepted hearing aids. Two "honest"
legislators turned it down.
It is not fair; poor deaf people in Florida cannot
afford hearing aids; rich hearing legislators that
do not need hearing aids still accept it as a bribe!

A CAR ACCIDENT
What is a half hit-run accident. It is when a
hearing driver has an automobile accident with a
deaf driver.
The hearing driver got out of the car and
said something to the deaf driver.
The deaf driver told the hearing driver that he
is deaf and to please write down on a pad.
The panicked hearing driver got back into the
car and drove away!
DeafDigest editor hopes the surprised deaf
driver copied the license number of the
half hit-run hearing driver!

DEAFNESS FOR NO REASON
Many of us were born deaf and do not know why we
became deaf; this is true of a deaf child of hearing
parents, with no deaf members on both sides of the
family tree.
Also, there have been cases of young people becoming
deaf for no reason, not being exposed to noise pollution
or sickness or something. This may be called Sudden
Deafness Syndrome.
There is another name for Sudden Deafness Syndrome;
it is called Asymptomatic Deafness. The word
asymptomatic means "without symptoms."

We, the deaf, use videos to communicate with
each other in the past.
This is not a new innovation. In fact, it is an
old innovation.
The old innovation was the TV phone, introduced
by the AT&T several times, taken off the market
and then re-introduced only to be pulled out again.

BUGS BUNNY LOVING US
The famous cartoon "The Big Snooze" showed Bugs Bunny,
the lovable rabbit character, using ILY to tell us that
he loves us.
When a cartoon character flashes this ILY sign, it is
no longer a big deal. Famous people do that all the
time - but this cartoon was produced in 1946!
The ILY sign was not universally used until
the early seventies, or even of the late sixties.
Did the cartoonist know something that we didn't
or if it was a coincidence?
Always a mystery.
A SCHOOL FOUNDER
A month ago, Edgar A. Smith Jr, a Texan, passed away
and the newspapers ran a piece on him, citing his long
list of accomplishment.
One such accomplishment was founding a school for
the deaf.
The newspaper did not say which school it was.
A google search failed to come up with that school.
A genuine claim or a bogus claim, no one knows?

His biggest professional regret was not being able to play
opposite Marlee Matlin in the movie "Children of a Lesser God"
because two of his aunts were deaf.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
People who use closed captioning need to be aware of what is
good and bad captioning. There are producers of programs and
television stations that are trying to save money without
regard to the quality of captioning that they are providing.
In order to tell if captioning is good or bad, first of all,
we need to understand the difference between realtime
and post-production captioning.
If a program has been pre-recorded, then the captioning should
be done ahead of time. The captioning for a pre-recorded
program should be nearly 100% perfect.
If a program is occurring live, then realtime captioning is
used. The captioner will instantaneously create the captions
while hearing the broadcast as it is occurring. Because
it is being done live, some mistakes will occur.
In order to save money, some producers are using realtime
captioning for pre-recorded programs. This means that
there will be errors in the captioning that should not be
there. In order to have quality captions, the captioning
for pre-recorded programs should be done in advance.

Crash course on the Digital Television Transition
This is a continuation of our weekly educational column on
addressing concerns about the analog TV shutoff and the final
transition to digital TV which is scheduled to occur on or
before June 12, 2009.

I've been having captioning problems on my new HDTV. I've written
the FCC and wondering if they are going to do anything about it?"
Answer:
Good news! The FCC knows about all these problems happening
everywhere and they just announced the establishment of a DTV
captioning work group to study these problems. It is made up of
both consumer and industry representatives.
Their first meeting is on May 18th.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
Theories as to why we, the deaf, have become deaf,
may possibly have been thrown out of the window, thanks
to findings of a team of scientists from Stanford, University
of Wisconsin, and Oregon Health and Science University.
In the past they thought something in the inner ear
was causing deafness. Now they are saying it is all wrong!
And they still have not identified precisely where inside
the ear is causing deafness but it definitely is not
in where they thought it was!

Deafness may cause dyslexia! This is what a group of
scientists from the University of California at San
Francisco have reported at a conference of the
National Academy of Sciences.
They said a group of adults, in a test study, had
problems identifying different sounds while relating to
the printed words.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Newspaper stories could be utterly misleading. One recent story
ran a piece titled "Did sign language increase deaf population?"
Huh! Meaning more people are becoming deaf because of their
growing use of sign language?
It would be much more accurate to just say that sign language
has helped deafness-in-denial individuals acknowledge their own
hearing loss.

At your workplace there is a fellow that you have
never communicated, in any which way possible - lipreading,
note writing, gesturing, etc.
There was no actual reason to communicate because your
work chores are different from his, and there was no reason
to cross paths professionally.

overreacts with a weird series of gestures that you do not
understand!

Description:
- Supervise, provide direction and guide non-exempt professional
and general staff, temporary staff, student employees and
Coordinators of Interpreting. Responsibilities include
hiring, termination, performance appraisal, professional
development, determination of wage/salary merit increments,
establishment of annual POWs, and providing consultation
regarding health and safety issues. Skillfully manage the
administration and resolution of all HR and employee relations
activities such as performance management, disciplinary
actions, Worker's Comp and injury reports,
time & attendance and payroll.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree preferred.
- Certification, professional license or credential: Registry
of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
- 5 years of expert/master skill level interpreting experience,
3 years service coordination and supervisory experience.
- Organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal, written, and sign communication skills.
- Management skills.
- Leadership skills.
- Computer skills.

Wraparound Family Partner
Walden School at The Learning Center for the Deaf
Framingham, MA
The Family Partner works as part of a team in the Walden School
Wraparound Program, a strength-based family centered program
serving families in their communities.
The Family Partner is responsible for support and advocacy to
parents/caregivers, providing some direct services and
helping families identify and access community resources.
The right candidate should have experience providing supportive
services to families or to individuals with emotional or behavioral
disturbance, preferably as a caregiver.
ASL fluency and bicultural competency are required.
Bachelor's degree preferred.
Must be able to work collaboratively with a team and posses effective
interpersonal and communication skills.
Time flexibility and some availability during evening/weekend hours
is required as is a valid Massachusetts drivers license.

Smoky Mountain Center
Clinical Counselor
Central Region/ Morganton, NC
Clinical counselor is part of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program
that provides behavioral health assessment, clinical treatment,
case management and advocacy services to deaf and hard of hearing
persons in a 27-county service area.
Clients served will be children, adolescents and adults with a
broad range of diagnoses of hearing. Clients will be referred from
throughout the 27-county catchment area by any of a wide array of
organizations and agencies that have identified the need for the
specialized services delivered by this program.
Master's degree from an accredited school of social work or an
appropriate human services field and must have a professional
license or be license eligible.
Due to the population served by this position, applicants must be
proficient in American Sign Language.
Prefer experience working with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Grade/Step to be determined by qualifications and classification
of applicant
Position is 100% FTE with comprehensive benefits. This is a non -
exempt position
