Weitz & Luxenberg P.C., founded in 1986, is one of the leading
plaintiffs' litigation law firms in America.

The firm has played leading roles in national and local litigations
involving defective medicines and medical devices, and general
negligence, among others.

Our law firm is expanding its litigation against the California-based

implanted in young children and adults.

Some of the firm's clients have suffered multiple implant surgeries
due to a defective implant being surgically removed and replaced
with a second defective implant that later failed.

It was learned that outgoing Gallaudet president Bob
Davila was featured on Univision, a Spanish-speaking

survive these waters!

SOME BANKS ARE AFRAID OF THE DEAF
This is a true story; a deaf person went to a bank
and gave the teller a note.
The teller got scared and pressed the "bank robbery"
button to alert the police.
The police came to the bank, looking for the bank
robber. The teller pointed to the deaf person.
It was realized that the deaf person was not a
bank robber but wanted to ask the teller a question
about a banking matter.
Many bank robbers pass notes to the the tellers
demanding money. Not that deaf person!

A SPEECH WITHOUT A PRINTED COPY
In 1966, there was a surprise visitor that came to
the Gallaudet University graduation ceremony.
The surprise visitor was president Lyndon B.
Johnson. No one knew about the visit - not even
the Gallaudet president or the White House.
Johnson arrived at the graduation and immediately
went on the stage to give a speech. After the speech
he left Gallaudet.
Where is the printed copy of his speech? The
Johnson Library archives does not have it. The
Gallaudet archives does not have it.
   A big mystery!

WHO WAS GEORG VON BEKESY?
Georg Von Bekesy, not deaf, is one Nobel Prize winner
that the Deaf Community never knew about.
He won the Nobel in 1961 for his work in Medicine.
He was not a doctor but worked on the inner ear and
the hearing aid technology.
Actually he was the last to know of the award that
he won. A representative of an organization in the
Pathological, Audiological, and Medical field, told
him about it, or rather congratulated him!

HOT ON CI YAHOOGROUPS
A hot issue has surfaced on several CI-based
yahoogroups. It revolves around misleading CI ads.
   Examples are:

ABC CI manufacturer:
Industry's smallest sound processor

DEF CI manufacturer:
Industry's smallest and lightest speech processor

Another one is:

GHI CI manufacturer:
weight - 10.9 grams
width - 9 mm
length - 42 mm

JKL manufacturer:
weight - 10.1 gram
width - 8.0 mm
length - 49.2 mm

Which manufacturer is better? Are we supposed to
decide which car is better - Toyota or Honda; which
fruit is better - Apple or Orange; which soft drink
is better - Coke or Pepsi.

   So perplexing, these Deaf Choices!

Terrell Owens - Alzheimer's Disease (yes, that football player)
Sigourney Weaver - oceans

A DEAF PERFORMER MANY OF US DO NOT KNOW ABOUT
Here is a trivia question. Who is Max Fomitchev?
Admittedly DeafDigest editor never heard of him
until he went web surfing and checked the
web site at http://www.jdcc.org/index.php/site/news/890/
Defecting from Russia with a MFA degree in Drama,
he made his mark, touring the world and giving
performances. Now living in Vancouver, BC,
the highlights of his career are appearances at
"Saving Silverman" and "Rainman."
Do keep an eye on him in years to come.

A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK

Q. How much is the relay money that the FCC oversees?

A. Close to $900 million. It may not be an exaggeration if we
are talking in terms of one billion some day in the near future!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

"being praised" like this comment:

it is great that you are interpreting for him out of
goodness of your heart!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

Over the holiday season, many TV stations have featured special
holiday-themed programming. We have seen special sports and
entertainment shows. Now, as the holiday season comes to
an end, we will find many TV shows beginning their new seasons.

Personally, I have seen a number of shows over this holiday
season where the captioning has been absolutely fabulous, but I
have also seen instances where the captioning was very poor or
totally overlooked. Unfortunately, there are people out there
who do not think that captioning is important. They may try
to pay as little as possible, so if that means poor quality
captioning or no captioning, that may be what they will try
to do. They may feel that no one is watching the captioning,
so it doesn't matter.

As caption viewers, we must also be advocates for captioning.
If we see a show where the captioning is horrible, we need to
let the cable companies, television stations, and captioning
companies know this. If the television stations are using
people who are unqualified just because they don't charge
very much, we have to communicate to them that that is not
acceptable. We must let them know that someone is watching
the captioning.

to them, is unaware of laws that mandate the provision of
accommodations in the health care setting so that all
persons have equal access to health related information.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

Why is deafness found in some horses? This is the issue
that veterinarians, specializing in horses, do not know.
They think that in some cases, horses' colors may have
something to do with the horse being deaf. This was
the finding posted on a blog.

..

The Deaf and the Law

A hard of hearing woman was dismissed as a juror in a
routine South Dakota court case. The reason was that she
"cannot" hear the judge.
The law on the books in the state says:

No potential juror may be excluded from jury duty because
of a visual or hearing impairment

   Contradictory? Yes!

..

DeafADA Issue of the Week:

A hot discussion surfaced on one of these
ADA-related yahoogroups. It focused on
retaliation - meaning could a discharged
disabled, deaf included, be fired as
retaliation for filing a claim based on
ADA violation?
The consensus is that those that file
law suits would fare poorly in the court room!
   So sad!

The Captioning Blunder of the Week:

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

21st century is here now! And to help honor the memory
of the 20th century is also to honor the memories of two
special deaf persons.
The first one is The Deaf Person of the Century.
The deaf person who did so much (way above the call
of duty) to improve the lot of the average deaf person
is - Frederick C. Schreiber.
Appropriately, the DEAFDIGEST names Fred as the
Person of the Century and dedicates this edition to him.
The second one is John Ringle. He passed away on
December 24th at the age of 95 in Jeffersonville, IN.
Ringle was known as the Deaf Red Grange in football.
He played for Gallaudet in the 1928-1930 seasons and
has left an imprint as a football legend. Carrying the
ball, he was so elusive in the open field and was also
so strong that it took a gang of tacklers to bring
him down. He led Gallaudet to a 6-1-1 record in 1930,
one of the best seasons in Gallaudet history.

..

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

After 103 years the Frat, effective on January
1st, is no longer providing life insurance
benefits for its members. All of its insurance
operations have been transferred to Catholic
Order of Foresters.

(editor's note: the Frat has since then ceased
to exist; assets have been transferred to the
Al VanNevel Memorial Foundation. The web site is at
http://www.vannevelfoundation.org/ )

....

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Do professionals in the deaf-related Pathological,
Audiological, and Medical areas actually know less than what
they think?

Do not know, but a recent article on deafness (will be
posted in the Gold edition tomorrow) led a deaf agency CEO
to make this comment:

for a very young person, this is actually more informed and
better than some of the 'professional' views I've seen.
If course, she has some issues a bit confused, but I give her
a lot of credit

..

A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's great news:

Your boss says nothing while your mail and letters pile up
during a mandatory project you are required to finish for
her that is taking a week....allowing you to finish your
project.

..

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

Sometimes you are "lucky"

you are walking on the sidewalk, someone suddenly
gets in your face, without warning and without
giving yourself a chance to avoid that person.

that person asks:

Where is the White House?

You happened to be standing in the direction
of the White House, and so, you point towards
that direction and show your five fingers,
to indicate five blocks away

if you have lipreading tales, please share these with
