His first day on the job as president will be January 1, 2011. Gallaudet president Alan Hurwitz has this to say: It is great that Gerry is the new President. He and I worked together for a long time and I know he will do just fine. He has the experience, passion and motivation to lead a fine institution like RIT/NTID. I look forward to working closely with him as a colleague. Election Day has come and gone. And among the newly elected governors, there is one that is a Coda - Dennis Daugaard of South Dakota. Said an acquaintance: He knows the deaf. He signs ASL in English order. During the early days of CSD he was one of CSD's interpreters for a short time. Right now, he does not use or sign ASL fluently. At one time during CSD's formative years Daugaard served on the CSD Advisory Board Very hopefully he will keep in mind the best interests of the deaf when he makes these decisions as the state governor. - Sunday October 31st DeafDigest mentioned a while ago that Jane Cordell, a deaf British woman, had her job offer as a deputy ambassador to Kazakhstan withdrawn when the government learned of her deafness. She appealed and it was ruled against her, citing the excessive costs (£240,000) to provide her with oral interpreters. DeafDigest also mentioned that we had a deaf diplomat who had to rely on his lipreading skills to function in the office. But that was during the fifties and sixties. - Monday November 1st Kaitlyn Mielke, Miss Deaf Minnesota, was a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show last week. She explained to Oprah her efforts in advocating captioning needs on behalf of the deaf - Tuesday November 2nd the parents of children at South Dakota School for the Deaf are not giving up despite being turned down in the court. They have asked the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to review the lower court's decision to close the school for good - Wednesday November 3rd When a deaf applicant, with three years of experience as stock clerk, is told she cannot turn in her application because of her deafness, what is she to do? Just sue. And she did, and won $184,400. This took place in Texas where the court ruled against Smith Personnel Solutions. .. (Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition) ..... Deaf Miscellaneous stuff: For some people Halloween is not funny. It especially was not funny for a deaf woman in New Zealand. Trick or treaters, upset on their door knocking of one house being unanswered, pelted the door with eggs. They did not realize she was deaf. The deaf woman had to pay to have the door professionally cleaned up. ............................................................... ............................................................... SUCCESSFUL DEAF BUSINESSES HAVE HEARING SUPPORT We have some big and successful deaf-owned businesses. What many deaf people do not realize is that hearing support staff is often the reason for the success of these businesses. It could be the hearing wife. It could be the hearing son. It could be a loyal hearing employee. Without these hearing people, it is often very difficult for deaf owned businesses to succeed by itself! - for ASL News version, please click on the arrow at: http://deafdigest.com/videos/hearingsupport/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) ELECTION DAY AT INDIANAPOLIS A deaf wife and a deaf husband both went to their voting place in Indianapolis on Election Day earlier this week. A young voting clerk saw the couple signing to each other and thought they needed something. The clerk gave them a Braille voting form! - for ASL News version, please click on the arrow at: http://deafdigest.com/videos/electionday/ (for your convenience, video links are posted on top of each DeafDigest edition) TSL IN WASHINGTON, DC Is there a TSL in the District of Columbia (Washington, DC)? TSL stands for Teenage Sign Language. DeafDigest editor, riding the Washington, DC subways, was sitting on the bench, waiting for his train to arrive. A bunch of teenagers was hanging out nearby, loitering, horseplaying, and just being annoying. The subway police came over and asked them to cut it out and to go home. They argued with the police. And during the arguing some teens (sneaking behind the police) used TSL to communicate with each other. The TSL actually looked like ASL, except that DeafDigest editor, watching the whole thing, could not understand what was being said (or gestured)! So, it is TSL for us everywhere to deal with when teenagers hang out. AN ELECTED DEAF OFFICIAL IN PANAMA? Did the citizens of Panama elect a deaf person to a legislative body? Diego Lombana Franceschi, a deaf man, visited USA recently and handed out his business card that said "Asemblea Nacional; Honorable Diputado Suplente". A google search produced several web pages, but these were in Spanish. ...................................................... ............................................................... NEW YORK DEAF KIDS TAKING UP ROBOTICS Robotics is hot on the campus of New York School for the Deaf, following a trend started few years ago among schools for the deaf. Seems every year a few more deaf schools are into robotics. Said Martin Keller, the school principal, who is helping form a robotics club, and is hoping to host a robotics tournament in the future: Our students can excel and improve in technology, science and math. This will enhance their educational process OFTEN OUT OF THE LOOP A workplace may be friendly; the deaf employee may be well liked by his fellow employees and highly regarded by his boss. Yet, the deaf employee is often left out of the loop, meaning the last to know, when there are workplace news, rumors, gossip, etc. Examples are: - a new employee is hired; everyone knows it, except the deaf person - a new procedure is explained to everyone, except the deaf person - employees go out after work for beers, no one tells the deaf person - someone is getting married; no one tells the deaf person - a woman is expecting a child; no one tells the deaf person And so on. Why? Very frustrating. OFTEN OUT OF THE LOOP, CONTINUED Sometimes, even at an all-deaf workplace, such as a service agency of the deaf, a well liked deaf employee may be left out of the loop. Many years ago, DeafDigest editor, as a young man, worked for a deaf service agency. The agency was hosting a community event. Beer was served at that event. The DeafDigest editor was responsible for picking up the beer keg and then returning it back to the beverage place. At the end of the day, the deaf employees, knowing there was still plenty of beer remaining in the key, wanted to get together at a home to finish it off. Via coded signs, everyone was notified of this evening plans - except the DeafDigest editor. For some reason, no one remembered to tell the DeafDigest editor to come over and to bring the beer! Yes, the evening was shot. The next day everyone apologized for the oversight. So, hearing people may not communicate with the deaf. And again, deaf people may not communicate with the deaf! WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being told by a hearing client: I will explain this to you and you then can explain it to him if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series "There are no letters on the keys on that machine. How do you know what letters you are hitting?" I have been asked this question many, many times over the years. All I can say is that I have the location of the keys memorized. I know where every letter is. Besides, if I want to stroke an "N," I have to stroke "TPH." It would not help me to see "TPH" if I didn't have the location of the "N" memorized. Here are the keys in a standard steno keyboard layout: STKPWHR AO*EU FRPBLGTSDZ Using these letters, court reporters, captioners, and CART providers have to write every word and sound they hear in the English language. They use combinations of letters to make other letters. The keys to the left of the "A" are written by the left hand. The vowels are written by the thumbs. And the keys to the right of the "U" are written by the right hand. Captioners strike more than one key at once, more like striking a chord on a piano, rather than one key at a time as you would on a QWERTY keyboard. A captioner may be required to depress ten or more keys at the same time to write a word or phrase. If a captioner wanted to write the word "hat," the captioner would press the "H" with the left hand, the "A" with the thumb, and the "T" with the right hand. That is a pretty simple sequence. However, to write the word "bridge," the captioner would press the "PWR" with the left hand, the "EU" with the thumb, and the "PBLG" with the right hand, and all these keys must be depressed simultaneously. As you can see, learning steno is almost like learning another language. It takes a lot of practice to remember the key combinations. ............................................................... ............................................................... weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://deafdigest.com updated every Monday ............................................................... ............................................................... An issue was raised in a Hollywood newspaper about lack of hiring of the disabled, the deaf, included in the movie industry. Actually an old issue raised every few years before it goes away. .... A federal judge ruled that the teeth of ADA does not stretch far enough to compel "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" producers to accommodate would-be Deaf Millionaires in their efforts to reach the show via punched-in touch-tone telephones. Judge Federico Moreno, however, wanted the producers to find a way to encourage the disabled, the deaf included, to participate. ..... News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Hearing screening tests among newly born infants is pretty much a standard procedure in many hospitals. Is it effective? The kid thought the coach wanted him to enter the game in the second half. No, it was to help the team manager fill up the water cooler and to bring it to the team.
