- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Sammy Oates, Austin,
Texas, who departed us

Sammy, who was deaf, was a football star at Hardin-Simmons
in the late fifties and had tryouts in the American
Football League, Canadian Football League and played a
few games in minor league football.

He was one of the most publicized deaf collegiate
athletes during the late fifties.

DeafDigest also dedicates this edition to Arthur Penn,
not deaf, who departed us. While he was a legendary director
of plays and movies, he wrote grants during the early
sixties that helped secure funds to found the National
Theatre of the Deaf.

Said a source:

He combined his clout with others in the Broadway
circles to convince the Department of Education
officials to get the federal money

OUR DEAF DOCTORS
We have a few deaf doctors in USA. Sometimes they
meet together at conventions and at workshops.
When they meet together, what are the two things
they often discuss?
The stethoscope and the surgical mask. There are
electronic stethoscopes that may help the deaf doctor
listen to heart beats. And there are see-through
surgical masks that allow them to read lips.

A DERRICK COLEMAN COMMENT
Derrick Coleman, who is deaf, is a member
of the UCLA football team. He is one of the
team's top running backs.
He does not know ASL, but wants to learn
ASL.
There was an issue on the UCLA campus
that while this college offers over 50
classes in different languages, ASL
is not one of these languages.
   Coleman said:

I was a little disappointed because we're
UCLA, and we should be having that

He was hoping to learn ASL to be able
to communicate with other deaf UCLA
students.
While UCLA has recognized ASL as a language,
setting up classes is another matter.

A CONFUSING NEWSPAPER STORY
A newspaper in the Philippines carried this story, which
ran as follows:

The Bureau of Immigration plans to hire the services of a deaf
interpreter to communicate with physically challenged passengers
to facilitate their passage

Hiring a deaf interpreter to communicate with the hearing?
Or is the newspaper saying that we, the deaf, are physically
challenged?

RE-INVENTING A MOUSETRAP SYNDROME
Is there such a thing as a Re-inventing Mousetrap Syndrome?
We have visual signalers, yet newspapers run a story of
an inventor coming up with a "better" visual signaler.
Or of a better sign language video? Or of a better captioning
device? And so on.
And now this - a team of girls at Center Point HS in Texas
winning a contest against boys by coming up with a new cell phone
technology that would help the deaf use sign language to communicate
with their friends.
The prize was given out at the Texas A&M Computer Science and
Engineering Competition.

CONFESSIONS OF HARD OF HEARING BLUFFER
An interesting posting surfaced on one of these deaf-related
yahoogroups.
It was of a middle-aged bluffer, who grew up borderline hard of
hearing, but relied on his lipreading to get by in the real world
without a college degree and without refined grammatical skills.
In his younger years he prospered as an advertising executive
but battling against declining hearing, and his continued denial
of his deafness.
Eventually time caught up with him and he lost his job, and
had to withstand abuse from colleagues in the cut throat
marketing and advertising field.
His advice? Go to college in order to do better.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

I am sometimes asked whether it is difficult to always be the
silent person in the classroom, at the meeting, or in the seminar.

Oftentimes I am asked to participate and offer my "two cents" to
the discussion taking place. However, just as it is with sign
language interpreters, it is important for CART providers to "stay
in role."

There is a fine line we walk when we have to be close enough to the
proceedings to be able to hear them well and capture the contents of
all communication, yet we must maintain our emotional distance in the
sense that we do not participate in the discussions.

No matter how much I may think I know about the subject being
discussed or how much I would like to contribute to the conversation,
it is not my place to interject myself into the proceedings.
Although it may be difficult, it is very important that we maintain
our silence and that we not become another participant.

The CART Provider's Manual prepared by the National Court Reporters
Association offers the following guidance on this subject:

"A CART provider's role is to facilitate communication. The CART
provider will at all times stay in role and perform in a manner
appropriate to the situation. A CART provider should decline any
invitation or suggestion by participants and the consumer to comment,
interject, advise, respond to inquiries, or in any way become
involved in the assignment outside the role of CART provider. If
necessary, the CART provider should politely explain the necessity to
stay in role."
