Weitz & Luxenberg P.C. is one of the leading plaintiffs' litigation
law firms in America. The firm has played leading roles in national
and local litigations involving defective medicines and medical
devices. Our law firm is expanding its litigation against Advanced

Some of the firm's clients have suffered multiple implant surgeries
due to a defective implant being surgically removed and replaced with a
second defective implant that later failed.

If you or your child has been implanted with a defective cochlear

- Very Hot News

Extreme Makeover, that wildly popular TV reality series,
has come to the Deaf Community for the second time.

The first time, it was for a deaf household in Michigan
in 2004. And now this time, for a dormitory at Oregon
School for the Deaf.

It was not a simple procedure - just selecting the school
for the reality TV project. School officials had to make
sure all regulations were in compliance, a much more
difficult task as opposed to sending carpenters to the
scene.

The televised showing date of October 31st is appropriate,
keeping in mind two things - the Halloween Day and the
school's famous Haunted House!

- Sunday September 5th

Washington, DC has many art galleries. One such gallery is the
Conner Contemporary Art. This gallery exhibits all types of arts
in all types of media.

One such media won raves, the 32-inch spark plug made from paper
and core. It was crafted by Chie Iwasaki.

Chie is deaf and attends Gallaudet University.

- Monday September 6th

Lincoln, a city in Nebraska, has distributed 70 smoke
alarms for its deaf residents at no charge to them. This
was made possible largely to the collaborative efforts of the
Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (NCDHH)
and the Lincoln Fire Department.  The Lincoln Fire Department
obtained the grant with advice and assistance of the NCDHH,
which then made the Deaf and Hard of Hearing people aware of
these free smoke alarms.

- Tuesday September 7th

Do people leave the city of Pittsburgh after they retire
because the resources are lacking for them? This was the
issue a deaf man spoke up at a neighborhood public hearing.
He cited lack of a special senior citizen home for the
deaf as an example.

- Wednesday September 8th

A certain kind of notoriety we do not want - a suspected
deaf Bank Robber was posted up on Houston newspapers,
with his fuzzy image picture, asking people if they knew
of his whereabouts.

Suspected, yes, because the teller thought the robber
was deaf - mute, mumbled speech and all that.

SOME DEAF PEOPLE HELP ATTORNEYS BECOME RICH
Some deaf people love to sue - 504 violations,
ADA violations, job discrimination, no captions
during emergency, etc, etc.
Some of these attorneys get rich because of
these lawsuits.
We have many deaf attorneys, but they do not
get rich. Only these hearing attorneys get rich.

the survey, the respondent will receive a small token of appreciation
for their time. If you want a paper copy instead to complete please

DEAF PEOPLE'S INVISIBLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS
We have deaf people in different jobs everywhere.
Many hearing people do not realize it.
Sometimes you sit down at restaurant and look at
the menu. It may have been designed by a deaf graphic
artist. Sometimes at other restaurants, you enjoy
that delicious meal. It may have been prepared by
a deaf cook, etc, etc.
These are "invisible" deaf accomplishments that
hearing people do not know about.

TO HELP OR NOT TO HELP THE DEAF
U.S. Rep. John Lewis, Alabama, had a deaf brother
who passed away just recently.
Not too many people were aware of this. Did Lewis,
in his years of service on the Hill, push pieces of
legislation that would help the deaf?
Said a deaf advocate who tracks deaf-related bills
on the Hill:

I have no recollection of the congressman's involvement
with these bills

Harkin, who had a deaf brother, pushed for ADA.
Different legislators, different priorities, DeafDigest
assumes.

A DEAF WAITSTAFF AT A BAKERY CAFE
Patrons entering Bakery Cafe in Kathmandu,
in Nepal, will be served by several waiters.
The cafe host would point out to waiters'
deafness and tell the patrons to point on
the menu their orders.
It was said that the employer prefers to
hire the deaf because they perform better
than the hearing.
Especially delicious was the yak pizza,
served by the cafe.

GLENNIE INTO SOMETHING ELSE

is deaf and is the world's best percussionist.
But there is more to her than what we realize. She has

jewelry line and now this - making her own trademark tartans
and is trying to break into the Scottish dress market.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

said one interpreter:

I was on an interpreting assignment not too long ago where the hearing
consumer asked me to "please stop gesturing like that".

She is an experienced interpreter, with many years of service to
her credit and she said:

It was the first time it happened to me!

Still continuing, she explained:

I have a very clear memory of the incident. After her comment I
explained I was hired, by her office, to interpret using American Sign
Language, which is done manually with the hands, and that I would be
making sure the Deaf person understood everything that was going on.
I also added if this was a problem for her we needed to get her supervisor
involved. She did not reply to me at all. She ignored me at that point
and went on with her job. Maybe she thought it was gang signs? I do not
have a clue what she thought as she did not share anything other than the
comment requesting I stop gesturing.

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

This weekend, as our nation is sharing memories of one of the
greatest tragedies in American history, we might want to think about
the contribution that television captioners across the country made
during the sad and momentous events that unfolded on September 11,
2001.

Many captioners who were captioning shows at the time of the attacks
stayed on the air for hours and hours at a time.  They were afraid
that if they disconnected from the encoders at the television
stations that were receiving their signals, that a new connection may
not be able to be established.

Captioners were writing with tears streaming down their faces, lumps
in their throats, and heavy hearts as they were providing continuous
coverage on station after station.  Many captioners in training were
thrown on the air because the demand for captioning services became
so great.

Some captioners have had to deal with the emotional scars that were
the result of captioning hour after hour of horrific news that
forever changed our country.  They could not turn off the stories
that became just too difficult for them to deal with.

Once again, thank you to all of the captioners who put their lives on
hold to provide access to all of the people who needed their services
during this great tragedy.  You may never know the lives you touched.

TWO GOALS IN SAUDI ARABIA
There is a group of individuals in Saudi Arabia, working
together towards two goals.
    The first goal is:

to eradicate sign language illiteracy

    The second goal is:

to establish a college for the deaf

Are both goals realistic? Only time will tell only
because of the nation's reputation of suppression of
women and those less fortunate.

I THOUGHT THE DEAF COULD.......

not function in the classroom because of their inability to hear

Huh! There are interpreters, note-takers and CART devices.

when a hearing person never meets a deaf person in his life

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

Why do people laugh? neuroscientist Robert Provine, a
University of Maryland Baltimore County professor,
researched this topic and made public his findings.

One of his conclusions was that deaf people laugh without
hearing.

He forgot one thing - that hearing people also laugh without
hearing. Do witness the silent movies where actors had to
rely on slapstick comedy to make the audience, both deaf
and hearing laugh.

The Deaf and the Law:

A question the employers are not allowed to ask of deaf
applicants:

do you have any disabilities?

This question, however, may be moot if an interpreter is
present during the job interview or if the applicant
gives away his deafness.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

DeafDigest dedicates this week's edition to Maggie Lee Sayre
who departed us.
Maggie Lee, while leading an isolated life, helped out on
the family fishing business on a houseboat that traveled the Ohio
and Tennessee Rivers. Photography was her lifelong hobby and she
took countless pictures of houseboats and the way of life
around her. She met no other deaf person after leaving Kentucky
School for the Deaf and came back only in recent years.
The houseboats disappeared without a trace. No one else
bothered to take pictures. A group of anthropologists, wanting
to learn more about the vanished houseboat way of life, came
across her intact albums of photographs.
She was well honored for her photographic efforts and a book
"Deaf Maggie Lee Sayre: Photographs of a River Life," was published.

The Province of Ontario in Canada seems to produce
outstanding deaf citizens of distinction.
First was Gary Malkowski who was elected as MPP in the

The second person so duly honored is Joyce Lange, of
Whitby, Ontario, who was selected as the Order of Ontario
recipient. She is being honored for her work on behalf of
the deaf in the province. A native of Oregon, she moved
to Ontario after she graduated from Gallaudet University.
    Congrats, Joyce.
