- Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to promising figure skater
Haley Gans. She died in a skiing accident at the age of
14. She was earmarked for a promising career as a competitive
figure skater. She is deaf.

Are 911 test emergency messages ineffective? Yes, as far as the
Connecticut state officials and telecommunications personnel
are concerned! There was a hearing on this issue which
was summed into one sentence "it will take many years"

- Sunday November 22nd
A research team affiliated with the Xinhua Hospital and
Jiao Tong University medical school, both in China, have
claimed to be able to detect and intervene in early
deafness. Not child's deafness, but deafness in the
fetus!
- Monday November 23rd
Mississippi School for the Deaf leaving its Jackson
campus for a campus in Brookhaven? The state government
made that suggestion that the school move to the
Mississippi School of Arts campus. Rationale given
was that it would boost the area economy as well as
to provide a safe environment for deaf students.
DeafDigest knows for sure that the Mississippi Deaf
Community will fight against such a move.
- Tuesday November 24th
We have been using our video equipment to reach
VRS providers to make relay calls for us. But there
is a twist. A certain airline carrier posted an
announcement on its web site urging deaf travelers
to use their video equipment to make reservations
directly with them! That airline, however, does not
have its own VRS facility but contracts with a VRS
provider for these video relay communications.
- Wednesday November 25th
If Michigan State University, as mentioned in a
previous DeafDigest article, is going to close its
Deaf Education Program and ASL Classes, there
will be a fight. The Michigan Deaf Community
is not taking it lightly; a rally is planned
on the campus on December 4th to urge the
university officials to reconsider its
decision.

A DEAF MAN TO THE RESCUE
The Palace Theater shows "hearing" movies in
Sequin, Texas.
Some years ago, this theater had sound problems.
The man, who could fix the sound problems, was out
of town. There was no other person around who could
fix that problem.
The theater owner knew of a deaf person, and
felt he could fix the sound problems, and asked
him to come over.
This deaf man came over and fixed the problem
within two hours.
He is deaf; he is not hard of hearing and
cannot follow the voice on telephone or radio
or TV.
That deaf person is David Pierce, who is
DeafDigest's Old Fogey cartoonist and owns
his own Davideo Productions.

D AND D STREET IN KENTUCKY
A hearing man was hired to teach at Kentucky
School for the Deaf in Danville, Kentucky.
The school is located on South 2nd Street.
Years ago, the town hearing senior citizens would
call it D and D Street.
This hearing teacher, would ask them "Do you
mean South 2nd Street?"
These senior citizens would look at him with
a funny look on their faces.
What is D and D in the street address? Deaf
and Dumb!

INTERPRETERS IN DOCTOR'S OFFICES
We always read stories of physicians and hospitals
refusing to provide interpreters, only to end up
getting sued by angry deaf patients.
Well, the Connecticut State Medical Society
ran a survey, and one if the findings was interesting.
It said:
Women physicians were significantly more likely to provide
interpreter services and patient-education materials in
other languages.
Is it saying that we, the deaf, should seek female
physicians because we feel they will provide interpreters?
Good question - because we go to the physician we trust
the most, regardless of the gender!
A LUCKY DEAF FAMILY MEMBER
There was a newspaper story of a deaf woman, named
Mary, who passed away last week.
The story said:
Mary was a very special aunt and confidant to her nieces
and nephews and managed to hear all of the family news before
anyone, even though she was deaf
This is interesting. In many, many families, the deaf
member is the last to know when something came up or
when something happened.
Not so with Mary!

TEXTING IN A BAR
Two deaf men were sitting next to each other in a bar,
using their own pagers to text messages. Some one said:
I'll never forget the two deaf men texting away to each
other as fast as their fingers could go.
Huh! Maybe it was the wrong impression. It may be
quite possible that these two deaf men were texting
to their own friends, not towards each other. Why
would two deaf people, sitting next to each other,
text to each other?
ASKING TOURISTS TO VISIT AOMORI CITY
Aomori City, population 290,000, is located in the
northern part of Japan. Cities compete against other
cities to get more tourists for themselves.

an interpreter said:
After conversing with my deaf student, a hearing student
asked me, "Do you really understand everything he said?"

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Because speakers may talk faster than some captioners can
write, there may be times when it becomes necessary for the
captioner to drop some unimportant words or to paraphrase a
thought.
A speaker might say, "Well, you know, back when Joe DiMaggio
was playing the game of baseball, DiMaggio was able to get
a 56-game hitting streak."
If the speaker was talking too quickly, a captioner might
shorten the sentence so that it would read, "Back when Joe
DiMaggio played baseball, he was able to get a 56-game
hitting streak." That would shorten the sentence from 35
syllables down to 24 syllables. Since the captioner is
writing syllable by syllable and not letter by letter, it
would make it possible for the captioner to keep up with what
was being said.
Realtime captioners do try to write verbatim whenever they
possibly can. However, there will be times when they will
need the skill of shortening or paraphrasing what is being
said. It is better to selectively omit unnecessary or
unimportant words rather than dropping important words. If the
captioner gave us these 24 syllables, it would not convey the
meaning the speaker intended. "Well, you know, back Joe
DiMaggio was game, DiMaggio was able to a fifty hitting."

An attorney, that works with the deaf, said:
I find it hard to believe that trained professionals could
not figure out a person was deaf in this day and age. There
are simple signals that would let you figure out that a
person is deaf.
This was in reference to a deaf person arrested by police,
ever so clueless to the suspect's deafness!

DeafADA Issue of the Week:
What is a disability and what is not a disability?
The new ADA regulations try to define these disability
or non-disability issues.
The more the regulations are written, the more vague these
become.
What about us, the deaf?
Hearing (ability) is considered a major life activity according
to the new regulations. Exactly how this plays out in the
court room is up to attorneys.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Is this an example of an outstanding deaf athlete
being exploited with no regard for need of interpreters?
A basketball star has enrolled in a junior college and
just played the first game of the season. There is an
interpreter present at basketball practices - but for
classes, natch, the interpreter ain't around!
For reasons of privacy the identity of the player
and the junior college involved is not being disclosed but
it is a true story.

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Is there a piece on the deaf in art that we may have never
heard of despite several published books on Deaf Art?
Well, the painting by Camille Pissarro of "The House
of the Deaf Woman and the Belfry at Eragny" was featured
at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Said an avid follower of Deaf Art. "I've never heard of
that painting, but thanks for alerting me to it."

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
When there is a deaf issue that is being written up in a
newspaper story, we need to ask ourselves this question:
is there more to it than what we are reading?
This is in reference to a deaf man winning an amount of money
in a job discrimination lawsuit against a labor union. Yet,
in the very last paragraph of that story, the union, involved
in the lawsuit, said that they have other deaf union members
and they all do not have job issues.
A quick question:
why is that deaf person filing a job discrimination lawsuit
whereas other deaf fellow union members have no issues?
We may never know why!

Master's Degree in Human Services AND 1 year of paid experience
working with deaf population.
American Sign Language fluency REQUIRED.
Requires Act 33/34 Clearances, valid PA driver's license and access
to a vehicle.
Oversight of the OP component at HDS including clinical supervision
of all the OP services. Coordination of community outreach activities
(including networking and marketing of available services to the
community at large), service coordination as well as ancillary services
such as OVR, housing and peer support services. Maintain strong
working relationships with internal (MBH and HDS) and external
partners and resources. In addition, the Team Leader/Mobile MH
therapist will provide community-based mobile mental health
individual and group psychotherapy to an adult behavioral health
population that includes mental health disorders with the deaf, hard
of hearing, and/or deaf/blind population. The Team Leader/Therapist
is responsible to evaluate, plan and provide clinical services across
the continuum of care within the community in a variety of settings.
The Team Leader/Therapist will also provide oversight of clinical
documentation and charting at HDS according to Federal, State, County
and Organizational polices and procedures. The Team Leader/Mobile MH
Therapist will coordinate Treatment Team meetings including collaboration
with psychiatric and other organization staff.

facility serving Deaf children, adolescents and adults as well
as hearing children/adolescents and adults with diagnosis of
Autism and/or Mental Retardation in a behavioral health setting,
has an immediate opening for a Clinical Therapist.
A Master's degree in counseling, social work and/or a related
field is required. Must be licensed in Florida or license
eligible.
This position requires that the candidate have experience working
with autistic and special needs populations. Some of our special
needs residents are hearing with limited verbal repertoire.
The candidate will be providing:
- Individual, family therapy (group therapy is a possibility)

Job Description:
The Assistant Director for Outreach is responsible for providing
coordination, leadership and support to these activities. The Assistant
Director works with the Director of Pre-College Outreach, and the Program
Assistant for Outreach in carrying out these responsibilities. The
Assistant Director has primary responsibility for management of NTID's
Explore Your Future Program (EYF), which serves 225-275 students annually
Detailed Description:
1. Lead the planning and management of NTID’s Explore Your Future
Program which provides educational activities to 225-275 students
annually. This activity involves the supervision of 40+ professionals
and 40+ student workers over a 4-6 week period each summer.
2. Work collaboratively with faculty and staff leaders involved in
planning and carrying out Outreach activities each year.
3. Provide project leadership to targeted Pre-College Outreach activities
as assigned.
4. Work with the other colleges of RIT to plan for deaf and hard of
hearing student involvement in their Pre-College Outreach activities as
assigned.
5. Work with the Outreach teams to facilitate the planning and
coordination of activities designed to meet needs of target audiences
6. Work with Outreach teams to evaluate impact of Pre-College
activities on enrollment pipeline.
7. Independently plan and travel for the purpose of promoting NTID
Pre-College Outreach Programs.
8. Provide periodical performance and data reports as assigned
Job Requirements:
Bachelor degree in Education, Business, Human Service or related field
required. Master degree in Education, Business, Human Service or
related field strongly preferred.
Experience:
- Experience in working with target Pre-College populations strongly
preferred
- 3-5 years related administrative experience
Skills:
1. Excellent interpersonal, supervisory, communication and written
communication skills required.
2. Proficiency in American Sign Language required.
3. Strong organization and time management skills required.
4. Highly flexible and able to work effectively in a team oriented
and fast-paced environment
5. Able to function effectively as team member in outcomes-oriented
work
6. Ability to make significant independent programmatic judgments and
decisions as necessary.
