Deaf people around the world celebrated the International Week of the Deaf in a variety of ways. The global week-long event is organized by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and the theme for this year was, “Sign Up for Sign Language Rights.” WFD announced on its website that the key mission behind this theme was to strive toward a better implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) at the national level. They say that the message prompts Deaf people to work with local and national associations to achieve this goal for Deaf communities around the world. To date, 78 countries around the world have legal recognition of sign language. Albania, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Bolivia, Denmark, and Nepal are among the countries that have done this.
In Birmingham, the second largest city in the United Kingdom, Deaf people advocate for improved community inclusion. There are 12 million Deaf people living in the United Kingdom. Recognizing this, Badminton England launched the No Strings Programme to make sure that Deaf individuals are not left out of social and physical activities. Local community sports clubs in Moseley and Sparkill have embraced this initiative, creating welcoming spaces for Deaf women to engage in badminton. The Unlocking Potential project has been impactful as it has provided a supportive environment where participants not only become fit but also build friendships, addressing both physical and social needs.
