Tyron McAplin, a Deaf man with cerebral palsy from the United States, was assaulted by police. The police body camera footage was recently released to the public and shows McAlpin being repeatedly punched and tased by Phoenix police during an arrest in August 2024. Police say that this happened because they were called to investigate an alleged assault at a convenience store, but were mistaken in their identification of McAlpin as the suspect. The video footage from both the police body camera and security camera shows McAlpin walking away from the police as they pulled up to a parking lot in their police vehicle. Shortly later, the police are seen aggressively engaging with McAlpin, which led to a physical struggle where McAlpin allegedly fought back.
A Deaf lawyer, Juventus Duorinaah is the first Deaf person in the country to be called to the bar. When a lawyer is "called to the bar," it means they have completed the necessary legal education and training and are officially admitted to practice law. This typically involves a formal ceremony where the individual takes an oath and is recognized as a member of the legal profession. Duorinaah grew up in Wa, northern Ghana. He attended Wa School for the Deaf and graduated from Senior High Technical School for the Deaf. He later enrolled into the University of Ghana and received a first-class degree in Sociology and Political Science. Duorinaah became passionate about human rights after personally experiencing challenges and social stigma linked to his Deafness. Duorinaah then pursued a Master's Degree in Law at Cardiff University’s School of Law and Politics in the United Kingdom. His degree specialized in Human Rights Law.

Virgin Atlantic has made history by becoming the first United Kingdom (UK) airline to train its cabin crew in British Sign Language (BSL). This initiative aims to improve accessibility for Deaf and hard-of-hearing travelers. The airline collaborated with Jodie Ounsley who is a Deaf rugby player, and Deaf twin content creators, Hermon and Heroda Berhane, to test the new services during a flight from London Heathrow to Washington. They received support with navigation, announcements, and in-flight entertainment. Their experience and feedback will be shared with Virgin Atlantic's new Accessibility Advisory Board to further improve services.
In Salta, the Deaf community faces significant difficulties. Despite Argentine Sign Language (LSA) becoming officially recognized in 2022, Hugo Farfán, co-founder of the Association of Deaf People of Salta, points out that the lack of interpreters in essential places like hospitals and banks prevents Deaf individuals from accessing their basic rights. He also mentions that education is a major problem as Deaf students do not have access to LSA or interpreters, which hinders their learning. In the labor market, many Deaf people face rejection due to prejudices about their abilities. Farfán asserts that for true inclusion to be achieved, LSA must be present in all public and private spaces. Although there is still a lot to be achieved, he remains hopeful that permanent changes will be made and that the language and culture of the Deaf community will be respected.
In Santiago, academics from the Austral University of Chile (UACh), Dr. Karina Muñoz and Dr. Aliaga Rojas published an article in the Journal of Sign Language Studies on the education of Deaf students in Chile, from a social justice perspective. The study addresses the experiences of Deaf students following the closure of special schools, which has caused an increase in students attending public education through mainstream programs. The researchers emphasize the importance of recognizing educational injustices towards this community and incorporating their culture and language into teacher training.
