Stabbed to death

A 72 year old Deaf woman named Malka Semenduyeva, from Brooklyn, New York was recently fatally stabbed. Her 47-year-old son, who lived with her, was also injured in the tragic incident at their apartment. The attack happened in Sheepshead Bay, where police found both victims with multiple stab wounds. Semenduyeva was taken to Coney Island Hospital but did not survive her injuries, while her son is expected to recover.

Exhibition to raise awareness

A Deaf photographer from Nottingham, England has launched an inspiring exhibition called "Deaf Mosaic" to showcase positive role models for Deaf people. The exhibition is part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of audiology services at Ropewalk House in Nottingham and features 42 portraits of Deaf individuals from diverse careers, including fashion models, athletes, TV chefs, and scientists. The photographer, Stephen Iliffe, says he wants to focus on Deaf individuals’ achievements and improve representation. He shared that he often felt isolated growing up without any Deaf role models, so his exhibition is a way to help other Deaf people who may feel the same way.

CANADA:

Negative experience with airline

A Deaf woman from Edmonton, Canada, was removed from a Porter Airlines flight last month due to a misunderstanding about her service dog. Georgina Villeneuve relies on her dog Maggie for assistance and experienced humiliation when a flight attendant insisted the dog be placed under the seat, which violates airline and Canadian regulations. Despite Villeneuve showing the staff the airline's own rules regarding service animals, she was threatened with removal from the plane, prompting an aggressive response from another passenger.

100 years of Deaflympics

The 51st Congress and the 100th Anniversary of the Deaflympics took place in Paris, France. Two days of intense discussions that resulted in key decisions that will shape the future of Deaf sports. The event concluded with a gala dinner, a special tour of the first ICSD congress site, a visit to the tomb of Eugène Rubens-Alke and a centenary exhibition at the INJS, Paris.

UNITED KINGDOM:

Sign language accessible movies

Sign Up is a Google Chrome extension that allows Deaf people the ability to view a sign language translation of a video. Some examples of videos can be movies from Disney and Netflix. This currently is only available for people in the United Kingdom (UK). The goal is to create more accessibility beyond captions. This also allows people to learn sign language. Sign Up has three languages available - American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), and Indian Sign Language.
