- Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Jules Duquin,
Buffalo, NY, who departed us. He wore several hats,
a technician with a precision machinery control
company, a well-respected basketball and softball
referee. And also maintained the local TTY network
in the Buffalo deaf community during the sixties
and seventies. And when decoders came out in the
eighties, he made sure these devices worked properly
in these deaf homes.
His obit is at:
http://deafdigest.com/juliusjduquin/
- Hot Newspaper stories during the week:
A deaf community disappointed at layoff of its advocate
http://deafdigest.com/surprise/
A quick rise and fall of a deaf-owned business empire
http://deafdigest.com/deringemployment/
- Very Hot News
Arizona lawyers versus the anti-captions Arizona movie
chain - an update:
both parties were ordered to negotiate. The chain made a
weak offer, which was quickly turned down. A lot of
captioning advocates have been pushing the Arizona
attorneys not to settle for too little, and that the
DC, New York and New Jersey settlements should not
be the standard.
And as a sidebar, Maryland House bill 1463, only very
recently introduced asks that:
Requiring a specified place of public accommodation to provide access to
closed-captioning technology for deaf and hard of hearing individuals;
requiring the Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation, in
consultation with the Governor's Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing,
to identify and approve the appropriate technology to provide reasonable
accommodation and to set the minimum number of showings in which
closed-captioning technology is required at a movie theater; etc.

Are we seeing a Beethoven in British composer Lloyd Coleman?
He is deaf, been deaf all his life. Yet deafness did not
stop him from loving classical music and being great
with it. And he is just 17 years old, and he has already
attracted attention and already written up in British
newspapers.
- Monday February 22nd
Members of the alumni of Clarke School for the Deaf
are upset. The school have changed its name only
that the alumni was not made aware of it.
It is now the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech.
Not keeping the alumni informed of the name
change in advance is a big time mistake. It was
the alumni, over the years, that raised the high
profile of the school. A school, any school, is
only as good as the solid alumni base behind it.
- Tuesday February 23rd
A deaf baby and a loud talking mother? This is
what researchers at the University of Western Sydney
in Australia are saying. In a way, DeafDigest is
puzzled - if the baby is profoundly deaf, what good
is a loud-speaking mother? Human nature, though
flawed?
(Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition)

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:
A group of Japanese attorneys, all hearing, are
upset that a deaf person could not get an
interpreter for participation in a jury.
Japanese constitution specifically allows
the a deaf person to become a juror with
proper accommodations. This was not done.
As a result, the attorney group is demanding
an official explanation from the judiciary
group that rejected the would-be deaf juror.

THE KEYBOARD AND THE DEAF
The keyboard has always been important to the
deaf. First, it was the TTY, then it was the computer
for e-mail and now for deaf pagers.
Will the keyboard disappear? Voice technology may
cause keyboards to disappear. In the future hearing
people can use voice to operate the computer.
We must make sure that computer manufacturers
will always keep the keyboard even though voice
technology is coming up soon.

DEAF PEOPLE IN FIJI
Fiji is a nation, way out in the Pacific Ocean,
and it has about 320 islands, but most people
live in two Fiji islands.
Anyway there was a research that said that
almost six percent of the Fiji people are
deaf.
Six percent of population is high. Why is
it that?
DeafDigest guesses it is because of
interbreeding among the natives of Fiji
that causes deafness? Nothing about interbreeding
was mentioned in the research report.

SUDDEN HELPLESSNESS
What is Sudden Helplessness? It is when
an interpreter does the unexpected. Examples
are:
- making personal uncalled for comments during the conference
- asking to be excused to go to the restroom
- distorting the comments by conference participants
- skipping scheduled assignments
Can't happen? Wrong, it has happened. What is the
moral?
Just make sure your interpreters are RID certified.
RID standards are the best in the world.

COMMENTS FROM A HEARING ACTOR
We, the deaf, have complained for years that
deaf roles in movies and theater have been given
to hearing actors, that know no sign language.
This is a sticky issue among actors. They
pride themselves on being able to play any role.
Even Marlee Matlin herself said the same thing.
In a newspaper interview, actor Mandy Patinkin,
not deaf, said:
I've had arguments over this kind of thing for years;
the first time was with the National Theatre of the Deaf
director who felt the deaf part should be played by a
deaf person. I don't disagree with that, but I’m an
actor and I want to play a deaf person, too. It's a
competitive business. I'm here to be an actor and
I'll play any role.
On the flip side, Darren Fudenske, a part time
deaf actor in New York, played a hearing role in
a small off-Broadway play!
ALWAYS A DUBIOUS CLAIM
What is a dubious claim to DeafDigest editor?
It is when a person says he is the first to
do something, or is the only person to do something.
A perfect example is the claim to have started
the first private school for the deaf in California.
Making the claim is Lois Huter Tarkanian, whose
husband Jerry Tarkanian was a famous basketball
coach at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her
son is Danny Tarkanian, who hopes to become a
senator.
First private school for the deaf in
California? Don't know but there was one for
many years, the John Tracy Clinic, which
operates classes for preschool deaf kids.
Been in business since 1942.
Do not know why the Tarkanian mother has
made the claim?
QUEENSLAND'S ONLY DEAF ATTORNEY
Queensland is a state in Australia. It is one of
the nation's largest states - there is only one
attorney, a new one, that would serve the deaf
community.
That deaf one is Kathryn O'Brien; she hopes to work
full time for a law firm, concentrating on the deaf
clientele.
A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO RELAY THAT YOU WERE AFRAID TO ASK
Q. Is FCC weak and powerless to deal with various VRS issues?
A. No; FCC is big and powerful; the problem is that there are
so many groups pushing their agendas onto the FCC, and we need
to make sure our Deaf Agenda is not being ignored by them.
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
a question like this -
is everyone in your deaf client's family deaf?
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
As many people are discussing the Olympics, thoughts may turn to
the medal performances of the phenomenal athletes. But what is
a topic of conversation among closed captioners who are captioning
sportscasts across the country?
Some captioners want to know: What is the proper spelling of the
name Yevgeny Plushenko? Is it Yevgeny, Evgeny, or Evgeni Plushenko?
Or might it even be Evgeniy Plyushchenko?
One of the greatest challenges for captioners who are captioning the
Olympics presentations and for the many captioners across the country
who are captioning sportscasts is to spell the names of the many,
many athletes from past and present correctly.
Captioners write phonetically and not letter by letter. So if they
don't know how the name is pronounced, it is difficult to put the
name in their computer dictionary so that it would translate
properly.
A captioner might find the correct pronunciation of a name on a Web
site, but what if the sportscaster found a different pronunciation?
Sometimes it may take a few seconds for the captioner to even figure
out what name was said. Some names may be spelled differently when
translated from foreign languages, and there may be different
variations of the same name.
Every time I see the many unusual names come up correctly in the
captioning of a sportscast, I am amazed at the talents and abilities
of many of the closed captioners out there who sometimes may feel
like they are working in an Olympic competition themselves.

I THOUGHT THE DEAF COULD.......
hear like a hearing person when he gets a CI
Yes and no. If a person is late deafened, a CI may
greatly benefit him. If a deaf person has been deaf
all his life, without being able to discriminate
sounds and voices, then it requires thousands of hours
of training with CI. Not easy for a much older deaf
person - tantamount to a much older person, growing
up speaking English and learning a totally new language
in a totally different country! As for infants being
implanted, jury is still out.
when a hearing person never meets a deaf person in his life
his knowledge of the deaf are often wrong

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
When a hearing person speaks, something in
the brain shows up on the scan. When a
deaf person signs, something in the brain
also shows up on the scan. Same scan
patterns? Possibly, according to
Karen Emmorey, the San Diego State
University linguist. This is probably
accurate because a talking person and
a signing person uses same thought
patterns.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Edna Adler, the Deaf Woman of the Century, as cited
by the Silent News, passed away on February 20th. She
was a long time associate of Boyce Williams at the
old HEW - and while Boyce got much of the credit for
sweeping social gains in the deaf community, Edna was
the quiet one behind the scenes, working with him
in unison.
..
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Trouble is brewing in Nevada as far as interpreters
are concerned. State law, as challenged by state department
of education requires RID or NAD certification. The
education people want this to be watered down.
....
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
a deaf mainstreamed wrestler was written up in the
newspapers as follows:
he earned a lot of respect for his courage to join
the high school wrestling team despite being deaf
Huh! What is so courageous about the deaf joining
a wrestling team. We have a number of schools
for the deaf with wrestling teams; we also have
many mainstreamed wrestlers that are members of their
high school teams. Matt Hamill was a 3-time NCAA-III
wrestling champion (in 3 different weight classes).
Marty Willigan, who wrestled for Hofstra University,
was a NCAA-I runner up in his weight class. And
wrestling was Gallaudet's #1 sport during the
1950's.
It is no more courageous for the deaf than it is
for the hearing to join a wrestling team.
..
A Vocational Rehabilitation counselor's great news:
You are sent to a conference. Fortunately, this includes
free food and hotel, so many different cable TV channels,
and you also get continuing education hours. The only
catch is you must actually stay awake during the
conference working time.

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
In talking with a co-worker...
She said--my daughter said I have high blood pressure
and gave me a prescription
Then I realized that she said--my doctor, not my daughter
(she doesn't have a daughter)
if you have lipreading tales, please share these with
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
