- Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to interpreter Alan
Champion who departed us. His specialty was theatrical
plays, especially on the Broadway. He set up a theatrical
interpreting example for future theatrical interpreters to
emulate. Thank you, Alan for making the plays so entertaining
for all of us, the deaf!
- What the stories are saying about the deaf?
Superdrug, a drug store chain in United Kingdom, unfriendly to
the needs of the hard of hearing? This chain has been accused
of refusing to install induction loops for those that use
hearing aids and need to communicate with the chain
pharmacists. There is talk of filing a lawsuit against the
chain for violating the Equality Act 2010. While not part of
this newspaper story, the same thing is going on with Tesco,
a British supermarket chain - not providing induction loops
for its hard of hearing customers.
The movie - Shogun Assassin - involved perhaps one of the
strangest reverse interpreting assignments of all time!
The original movie version was produced in the early eighties
and was so violent that its showing was banned in some cities.
Director Robert Houston, not deaf, wanting to remake the movie,
hired a group of deaf people, as reverse interpreters. They
advised the scriptwriters what the actors were saying in the
original version - in order to make the remade film a much
better one.
- Very Hot News
Georgia may be paying the price for indifferent mental health
services for the deaf. A lawsuit is forthcoming, filed by
deaf residents, accusing the state of not doing much with
mental health services.
- Sunday April 24th
Fiji's Ministry of Information, National Archives and
Library Services has started using interpreters on
its Fiji Today daily news programs to make it
accessible to the deaf.
- Monday April 25th
Gulsher Gorchani is a tiny village of just about
1,000 people hidden in the most remote parts of
Pakistan. And a half of these people are deaf,
as a result of intermarriage and a genetic mutation.
This was mentioned in a newspaper in Pakistan.
- Tuesday April 26th
The Coda governor of South Dakota, Dennis Daugaard, has
publicly thanked his deaf parents in a speech he gave at a
school. He said that his deaf parents came to all of his
school events while growing up even though they had no
interpreters. His comment was this:
They came because they loved me
- Wednesday April 27th
Almost immediately following Regal's promise to outfit
Seattle moviehouses with captions, Cinemark has come up
with an announcement - to outfit all California theaters
with closed-captioning equipment. This announcement
prompted a disabled group to drop its lawsuit.

AN OLD JAPANESE LAW
There was a law passed in Japan 2,000 years ago. The law
said that the deaf cannot work in the health field -
doctor, dentist, nurse, health aide, health technician, etc.
That was the reason why there no deaf people in Japan
for many years in these health fields.
This law was removed few years ago, and there is already
a few deaf Japanese people in these health jobs.

A FIGHT CLUB IN PITTSBURGH
There is a Fight Club in Pittsburgh. Fight Club like
boxing or wrestling or martial arts fighting? No!
It is a new name for a club for future interpreters
and for sign language students. It is sort of a social
club but with one rule. All voices must be turned off.
These students learn to sign better by mingling with
each other in a social club environment that is also helped
by some workshops.
This is a different way of helping hearing people
learn ASL.

A NEW GROUP IN UNITED KINGDOM
Deaf-related groups come and go, the same as with
hearing groups.
The latest group to surface in United Kingdom is
Deaffinity.
Deaffinity? Its' mission is as follows:
to help break barriers and improve the quality of life for the BME [black and minority ethnic] D/deaf community.
Capital D, lowercase d - can get quite confusing.
WHO PAYS FOR NEWBORN HEARING SCREENING TESTS?
When babies are tested for their hearing, many of
these parents do not realize that these tests are
not free.
Who pays for these tests? It varies from state to
state; some parents pay; some insurers pay; tests
at clinics are free, but the waiting list is long.
In Ireland, parents are being charged 100 Euros
if they want immediate results. If they want free
tests, they are put on a waiting list, which may
take as long as one or two years!
A CHEF AT PHILIPPINES' GOVERNMENT PALACE
The Malacañan, in Philippines, is sort of like our
White House. It is where Philippines' president works
and lives.
And in the Malacañan kitchen, Rosario Enriquez
works as a staff chef. She is deaf.
She has served meals for high ranking political
officials and international guests.
We've never had a deaf chef at the White House,
though.
Rosario's goal, some day, is to open her own
restaurant.

A FACT ABOUT 1957 FULTON TONTINE
The National Association for the Deaf, in existence for many
years, went through a major reorganization during the Fulton
Tontine in 1957. These meetings took place on the campus of
Missouri School for the Deaf - hence the name - Fulton Tontine.
Anyway, an interesting fact was that the Tontine was not
represented by deaf leaders of all 48 states (Alaska and Hawaii
did not become states until later). Only 19 representatives
took part at the Tontine. Yet they made decisions which led to
NAD's reorganization!
Let us compare this with the Original 13 colonies which
declared independence from the British Crown. If only half
of these colonies sent representatives to The Continental
Congress, then would their vote have a binding on other
colonies that did not show up?
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
interpreters that forget why they are interpreting and to whom they are serving
this interpreter was complaining about fellow interpreters
that whine about working conditions in an interpreting
environment
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Are all CART providers equal, or is it possible for different CART
providers to have different "interpretations" of an event?
There are a number of factors that influence what you see on the
screen of a CART provider or realtime captioner. As much as we all
strive to be 100% verbatim, that can never happen because we are
human, and mistakes and individual variations will take place.
The biggest factor to have an effect on the output of a CART provider
is the ability of the person doing the job. This is like any other
job where someone uses their skills to perform translation or
interpretation services. Will every sign language interpreter be
able to interpret the proceedings with 100% accuracy? Obviously,
experience and ability play a huge role in determining the quality of
the interpretation.
Another factor that may influence the output of a CART provider or
realtime captioner is his or her familiarity with the topic being
discussed. If someone were to say, "Nursultan Nazarbayev announced
his new cabinet members today," this may be a difficult sentence to
translate properly. The following are sample variations that may
occur, depending on the knowledge of the captioner:
"Kazakhstan's president announced his new cabinet members today."
"The president announced his new cabinet members today."
"New cabinet members were announced today." Â
THE CHALLENGE OF FEMALE ACTOR SOHA ALI KHAN
Soha Ali Khan is a female actor in India's Bollywood.
In the movie "Soundtrack" she played the role of a deaf girl.
In order to understand what it is to be deaf, she mingled
with the deaf at a school and tried to pick up some signs.
Upon reading this short newspaper story, DeafDigest
wonders why not just hire a deaf female actor. No one knows
the role of deafness better than a deaf actor!

A COMMON DEAF MISCONCEPTION
that it is OK to tell the deaf person, in middle of
conversation that he does not understand - "its not important" or "I'll explain this to you later"
It is NEVER OK and it is a serious violation of etiquette
if the conversation itself is not important, just tell him
exactly what you were all talking about, and let the deaf
person be the judge of what is important and what is not
important

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
There are many uses for the infrared light. It helping the deaf?
Well, it was reported that the University of Utah researchers
have been using the infrared light to reach inner-ear cells of
toads. It in turn sends signals to the brain. These researchers
are implying that this method would enable CI to use optical
signals instead of electrical signals.

The Deaf and the Law:
Who pays for interpreters in legal cases?
The law firm pays for interpreters during
client meetings.
In the courtroom, the court pays for interpreters.
For depositions and joint meetings between
rival attorneys, the cost is split in half.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
There is a new addition to the world's most elite list - deaf individuals that have won public elections (Gary Malkowski,
Judith Toth, Kevin Nolan and others).
The latest addition is Sumie Sakurai, a hard of hearing
Japanese woman, won an election to a seat on the Hakuba
Village Assembly.
The Japanese Federation of the Deaf, equivalent to our
NAD, says Sumie is the first deaf person to win an election
in Japan.
Congrats, Sumie.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
This story resurfaces from time to time on why did
the California School for the Deaf move its campus
from Berkeley to Fremont.
At the time of the move, the deaf community was told
that the school was sitting on the top of an earthquake
fault. It made no sense because the neighboring University
of California (at Berkeley) stayed as is without packing
its own bags.
Could it be that the university was greedy for the land
owned by the school for the deaf? This issue was raised by
Carol Shimmerling, not deaf, at a public hearing. She
accused the university of wanting to push out the deaf
school, using the fault as an excuse.
The accusation was made recently even though the move
was made a long time ago.
......
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
It was announced that Marlee Matlin raised one million
dollars on Donald Trump's reality TV show for a foundation
that works with the hearing impaired.
Should she have split one million - half to the NAD and
half to the Agbell; or half to Gallaudet and half to
NTID.
Something that is puzzling
....
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

The deaf employee thought the boss said:

These researchers
are implying that this method would enable CI to use optical
signals instead of electrical signals.
......
The boss shows a picture to a deaf employee and said:
This is my new house in Middleburg
The deaf employee thought the boss said:
This is my new house in Merberg
