- What the best newspaper stories are saying about the deaf?

Jamaica, with its long history of oppression towards the deaf,
has come up with a first - Cassandra Whyte, a deaf woman,
was selected as the nation's first Miss Deaf Jamaica. She
will be representing her nation in the global deaf pageant
contests.

Famous British TV star Rita Simons (EastEnders series)
has a deaf daughter, a fact that surprised the fans that
have loved watching her act as the Roxy character. Until
recently she did not want people to know about her
deaf daughter.  Now, she is proud of her deaf daughter

- Very Hot News

The 2010 National Film Registry, a feature of the Library of
Congress, has listed the "Preservation of the Sign Language"
as #20 on its list. Only 25 films made the final list. The
1913 film that showed George Veditz in sign language is
just two minutes long!

- Sunday December 26th

Kade Carr, a seven year old deaf boy won 4th place in the
Texas University Interscholastic League story telling
competition, competing against hearing kids his age.

He is a second grader at the Dunbar Primary School in
Lufkin, Texas.

- Monday December 27th

New Zealand, has for quite some time, not funded the nation's
four deaf sign language teachers. As a result, deaf children
that want to learn signs are forced to rely on DVDs and
sign language dictionaries. This issue was raised by
a deaf activist.

- Tuesday December 28th

As cities in Australia go, Cairns is not too well known.
Yet in this city of 125,000 people, deaf people will be
able to watch movies in captions. It said that the rear
view technology will be the only one in the nation. And Cairns only has around 150-200 deaf individuals!

- Wednesday December 29th

A church for the deaf in Dayton, Ohio was broken into
by a burglar. The total loss of the burglary was
just $4.00!

Yes, the police is looking for the burglar.

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

A common complaint in USA is that we just cannot fight the
City Hall.

In Manchester, a city in Great Britain, the deaf can fight
the City Hall!

The Manchester City Council has enabled a web site that allows
the deaf to directly reach council staff members.

That means the deaf can complain about pot holes on the roads,
about unfair parking tickets and etc.

SOME BANKS ARE AFRAID OF THE DEAF
This is a true story; a deaf person went to a bank
and gave the teller a note.
The teller got scared and pressed the "bank robbery"
button to alert the police.
The police came to the bank, looking for the bank
robber. The teller pointed to the deaf person.
It was realized that the deaf person was not a
bank robber but wanted to ask the teller a question
about a banking matter.
Many bank robbers pass notes to the the tellers
demanding money. Not that deaf person!

A SPEECH WITHOUT A PRINTED COPY
In 1966, there was a surprise visitor that came to
the Gallaudet University graduation ceremony.
The surprise visitor was president Lyndon B.
Johnson. No one knew about the visit - not even
the Gallaudet president or the White House.
Johnson arrived at the graduation and immediately
went on the stage to give a speech. After the speech
he left Gallaudet.
Where is the printed copy of his speech? The
Johnson Library archives does not have it. The
Gallaudet archives does not have it.
A big mystery!

A TALE OF DEAF FARMERS
DeafDigest editor read the following tale. It is up to you
to believe if this is true or not. Anyway here it goes:

A family has a generation of late-deafened farmers.
The first generation farmer became late deafened because
of a tractor that was without its muffler.

The muffler-less tractor was passed down to second, third
and fourth generation farmers, and they all became late-deafened! They all blamed genes for their late
deafness and never blamed the noisy tractor.

Fact or fiction?

A CI - ADVANTAGE

This week an article, listing the advantages and disadvantages
of CI, surfaced in the media.
Just to doublecheck, DeafDigest editor shared this article with
an administrator of a school for the deaf. The administrator said
it was the most balanced CI article ever written.
The Blue edition will feature the CI advantages. The Gold
edition will feature the CI disadvantages.
Here it goes:

- ability to hear sounds and volume
- ability to understand speech
- helps deal with different hearing losses
- helps deal with auditory neuropathy, meningitis, otosclerosis, acoustic neuroma and an abnormal ear - works with lipreading to follow speech

CONSULTANTS IN EDUCATIION OF THE DEAF
Consultants, which work on contractual basis, are
everywhere, including Education of the Deaf.
Many consultants know their subject matter and
perform competently. Some consultants know nothing but
are paid to "consult."
Confessed one former Deaf Education consultant:

I knew nothing about Deaf Education, and I was supposed to
educate Teachers of the Deaf!

When the contract expired, this person went into a
different profession.

A LUCKY CODA
A Coda, with excellent signing skills, was struggling
to make ends meet while jumping from a job to another job.
She had no interest in making interpreting her career, by
the way.
A friend of hers is also a Coda that worked as an interpreter
in the municipal court system. That friend could not make
it for one court interpreting assignment.
Out of desperation the interpreter asked this hard luck
Coda friend if she could sub as an interpreter just for
that court assignment. When the Coda protested that she has
no interpreting experience, "easy" money was dangled.
This hard luck Coda took that assignment, and realized
interpreting was it for her as a lifelong career.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being asked:

can your deaf client read lips?

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

As we begin 2011, it is the time of year when many people make New
Year's resolutions.  For some court reporters, CART providers, and
realtime captioners, their resolutions are to practice their steno
writing so that they can increase their speed and accuracy.

Some people look at captioners as if they were machines.  They might
think that all realtime captioners write the same way.  But that is
not true.

Writing on a steno machine is a skill that must be developed and
worked at.  You must practice it and stay in shape in the same way
someone must follow an exercise program for their body.

There are dictation drills and finger exercises that increase your
dexterity and speed.  Students who are studying steno must learn to
reduce hesitation and increase their ability to concentrate for long
periods of time.

Just like people who exercise their body, people practicing on the
steno machine should keep a positive outlook and look to the future
for the goals they want to achieve.  Above all else, they should try
to make it fun and something they enjoy doing, so that they will
stick with their new "exercise program" in the coming year.

TO BE LATE DEAFENED
On the web this week two opposite stories surfaced regarding
late deafness.
One late deafened person complained on one web posting that he
lost all of his hearing friends and does not know what to do.
Another late deafened person, is a heavy participant
in one of these internet games sites. He told his friends
on the game web site that he has lost his hearing and that
he would not be able to "listen" to audio sounds that is part
of the game strategy.
Much to his surprise, his friends explained to him different
ways to play the game, without the need to listen to these
audio sounds.
As for the first late deafened person, there are organizations
that would help him deal with his deafness. Just hope he avails
himself of these services.

DEAF POLITICAL AWARENESS

Q. We have a number of deaf elected officials. To get an
idea of who they were, do click on:

http://deafdigest.com/elected-deaf-officials/

But which election win was the most shocking of them all?

A. The win by Gary Malkowski in 1990 to become the Member of Provincial Parliament in Ontario. It is equivalent to becoming
a senator on the Capitol Hill. He served five years before
being defeated in a 1995 election. The other high ranking deaf elected officials either were oralists, or were late-deafened.
Gary used ASL as his primary language, and the Ontario government
hired interpreters to accompany him on his daily rounds.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

For some reason, it was assumed that young boys are
more liable to lose hearing because of loud noise.

Very little, if any, was mentioned about young girls
being exposed to this same loud noise.

This assumption has changed according to the
recent edition of the Pediatrics Journal.

This article is saying that girls, as well as boys,
do face this same hearing-loss risk.

.......

The Deaf and the Law:

Maura Mena, who is deaf and is a resident of the Miami area in
Florida, has filed a formal complaint, accusing Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah of not providing her with an interpreter.

The Florida Human Relations Commission is taking up this case to see
if the hospital is a public establishment. If so the hospital would
be guilty of ignoring Mena's interpreter request.

.......

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

21st century is here now! And to help honor the memory
of the 20th century is also to honor the memories of two
special deaf persons.
The first one is The Deaf Person of the Century.
The deaf person who did so much (way above the call
of duty) to improve the lot of the average deaf person
is - Frederick C. Schreiber.
Appropriately, the DEAFDIGEST names Fred as the
Person of the Century and dedicates this edition to him.
The second one is John Ringle. He passed away on
December 24th at the age of 95 in Jeffersonville, IN.
Ringle was known as the Deaf Red Grange in football.
He played for Gallaudet in the 1928-1930 seasons and
has left an imprint as a football legend. Carrying the
ball, he was so elusive in the open field and was also
so strong that it took a gang of tacklers to bring
him down. He led Gallaudet to a 6-1-1 record in 1930,
one of the best seasons in Gallaudet history.

.......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

A headhunter is in the picture with respect to the search for the next Gallaudet president. Headhunter Dr. Patricia T. [Tobie] van der Vorm, of the Academic Search Consultation Service, has been hired for this specific
task.
It is assumed that van der Vorm is aware of our need
for the next president to be deaf or hard of hearing.
And what if this headhunter still somehow recommends a
Zinser?

(editor's note: Gallaudet since then has been admirably served by two deaf presidents - Bob Davila and now Alan Hurwitz)

.......

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Tamon Hiroshi is a deaf attorney in Japan. He said he is the
first deaf person in Japan to become an attorney.

Anyway. he said that 80 percent of cases he has handled on
behalf of the deaf since he started his practice in 1998
are for crimes against the deaf!

Such crimes are financial scams and pyramid sales.

Very sad!

.....

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

many years ago as a kid, DeafDigest editor played basketball
for a hearing youth league team.

The hearing coach said:
you are to guard Dressler

You thought the coach said:
you are to guard Strassler

Not quite understanding the coach, he pointed to Dressler's
jersey number and said "just guard him"

You are puzzled until you later realize there was an opponent
by the last name of Dressler!

if you have lipreading tales, please share these with
