- Dedication
DeafDigest wishes to dedicate this edition to two
individuals that departed us. They were deaf but functioned
as hearing.
Famous comedian Leslie Nielsen, who made us laugh in many of
his slapstick movies, was deaf all his life; yet he joined
the Canadian military. After getting out, he made comedy
his lifetime career. The obit said he was legally deaf
Famous New York Yankee baseball player Gil MacDougald, of
these 1950's glorious championship teams, became deaf because
of a head injury in a ball game. He suffered for years in
silence until a CI rescued him.

We have a Deaf Wine!
It is The Three Deaf Musketeers, a label by
deaf winemaker Rusty Wales, which earned
honorable mention honors in the WineMaker
Magazine.
His wine was considered one of the 20 best

- Sunday November 28th
Deaf Aotearoa, a deaf lobbying group in New Zealand, has
complained that the nation's social service system
is failing the deaf by not meeting their needs.
Cited as examples are police, employment and social
security not responsive to what the deaf people need.
- Monday November 29th
Are deaf referees better than hearing referees?
This is what researchers at University of Sheffield
in England are saying.
They are saying that the deaf eyes observe much better
than hearing eyes and therefore are capable of making
better calls.
Opportunities for deaf referees in big time sports
are limited, even though we do have a deaf referee here
and there in NCAA-II, NCAA-I basketball and even at
NAIA national championship tournaments.
- Tuesday November 30 2010
Ireland has backed off on its ruling not to allow
the deaf to serve on the jury. DeafDigest mentioned
it in last week's edition.
Senan Dunne has become the first deaf person in
Ireland to get permission to serve on the jury.
The sticking point was interpreter considered to
be the 13th person in the jury room.
It was then determined that if the interpreter takes
an oath of confidentiality then this 13th person issue
becomes moot.

Seems state lawsuits against anti-captioning movie
houses are becoming an epidemic
The latest one is the filing in the Alameda County
courts (California) accusing Cinemark of being
anti-captioning.
A point raised was that of the three largest movie
chains, Regal and AMC and Cinemark, the latter
is the only one that has refused to provide captioning
equipment.
As with these captioning lawsuits, stay tuned. These
lawsuits take time weaving way through the court
system.
......
(Thursday-Saturday Hot Deaf News will be in the Gold edition)
.....
Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:
A lawsuit has been filed against the Commonwealth of
Kentucky by Kentucky Education Association on behalf
of some teachers at Kentucky School for the Deaf.
The issue is the furloughing of state employees.
Attorneys representing the plaintiffs are saying that
the furlough law is unconstitutional and being unlawfully imposed. The state disagrees and wants
the lawsuit thrown out.

WRONG SMOKE DETECTOR
Last week a deaf woman was sleeping when there was a
fire in the apartment next to hers.
She could have died because of smoke poisoning, but
was saved by firemen that woke her up.
She had a smoke detector but it did not wake her up.
Why?
Because it was the wrong one - it only showed tiny
flashing lights. The right one is a strobe, and she did not
have it.
The city found a new strobe alarm and has already
placed it in her apartment.

STRANGE WAITING LINES AT COMCAST OFFICE
DeafDigest editor went to the Comcast office
this week to get a new TV digital remote.
There were three window signs - one for
disabled customers, one for senior citizens
and the other for regular customers.
There was a long line at the disabled customers
window. There also was a long line at the senior
citizens window. But there was no waiting line
at the window for regular customers.
Guess where did DeafDigest editor go to?
Of course, for the regular customers.
Why? DeafDigest editor hates to wait in a long
line!

AN ORAL DEAF BUSINESSMAN AND AN ASL DEAF BUSINESSMAN
An oral deaf businessman, who knew no sign language,
contacted an ASL deaf businessman to see if a business
deal could be made.
Communication between both businessmen was painful
and difficult. It was impossible for the ASL businessman
to read the lips.
How did they communicate? They had to use the UbiDuo
to communicate with each other.
CONGRESS: WHAT WILL YOU MISS THE LEAST?
The question "What will you miss the least?" was
asked of lame duck congressmen, those that would not
return when the Congress gets together next year.
The responses were posted in "The Hill" which is
a must reading for those that follow politics.
Anyway, if DeafDigest wishes to include a response
from a deaf staffer, whose boss lost his reelection
and would not be returning, then the response is this:
I will not miss the high pile of letters from
constituents to answer and to respond to a long list
of constituents' emails!
Sorry, the identity of the deaf staffer and her
Congressman boss shall be confidential.

A NEW PHRASE TO DESCRIBE OUR SCHOOLS
For years we have called our schools for the deaf as
residential schools. Then it has become state schools
for the deaf.
And now this -
center schools
If you catch a deaf person saying he went to a
Center School, then you would know what he is talking
about!
WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being asked:
is sign language universal?
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Because court reporters, realtime captioners, and CART providers have
embraced technology in order to make sure their profession remains in
demand, they now rely on technology to do their job.
Just like many other professions, on a daily basis captioners depend
on technology that functions properly. Their steno machines are no
longer mechanical machines, but are computers with intricate
designs. They use laptop or desktop computers in order to translate
their steno notes, and all the necessary programs must work in order
to provide an accurate output.
There are modems, encoders, projectors, and other pieces of equipment
that can malfunction. Captioners and the people working with them
must be able to troubleshoot the problem quickly in order to make
sure that everything that is being said is being recorded correctly.
If you see captioning errors, they may not be human error, but there
are times when a computer or another electronic component
malfunctions. As in other areas of modern society, one little
computer glitch can cause big problems.
When gibberish appears on a computer monitor or a television screen,
the court reporter, CART provider, or realtime captioner may be
stroking all the right keys on the steno machine, but there may be a
problem with a piece of equipment.
EMPLOYMENT TREND AMONG THE DEAF IN WASHINGTON, DC
DeafDigest editor is not sure if the deaf employment trend in
Washington, DC is the same as in any major metro area, including
Rochester?
Years ago, practically every other deaf person in the Washington,
DC area was employed by the federal government or worked in the
printing field (Washington Post, Government Printing Office, etc).
Seems every other deaf person newly introduced to DeafDigest
editor is employed as a sub-contractor with the federal
government in the Washington, DC area.
Again, not sure if this is the same trend anywhere?
A CONVERSATION AT DR RATTNER'S DENTAL SUITE
DeafDigest editor kept his dental appointment with
Dr. Steven Rattner's office in Gaithersburg, MD.
The editor likes to keep his dental appointments for
one reason - the dentist has a high number of dental
patients that are deaf, and there is always a chance
of bumping into a long lost acquaintance or making a new
acquaintance.
Anyway, while sitting in the waiting room, the editor got
into a conversation with a deaf man, whom he has never met
before.
This deaf man is a graduate of a small college that has
a number of deaf students. He said:
- the deaf student numbers dwindled from 35 to five because
of high tuition costs
- he chose to attend that college instead of Gallaudet or
NTID, because after graduating from Model Secondary School
for the Deaf, he tired of the Gallaudet campus. It was a
decision he regretted to this day!
- the college he attended was lacking in social life opportunities
for the deaf but it was offset by the opportunity to intermingle
with the hearing
- intermingling with the hearing, he said, is the reason for
his success in the hearing employment sector
Suddenly the editor was called in by the dental assistant
and the conversation ended.
The editor will be having an appointment next March and
hopefully another productive conversation will take place
with someone else !
Oh, by the way, Dr. Rattner has another suite in College
Park, MD. It is a convenient arrangement for the deaf community -
the College Park suite serves the deaf in the Washington, DC
area whereas the Gaithersburg suite serves the deaf in the
Frederick, MD area - the best of two worlds!

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!
A stink has been raised concerning the inaccessibility for deaf patrons of the Troy University's Rosa Parks Museum
in Alabama. Simply put, no captions anywhere at the
museum.
And to make it even more insulting was that the university
president who approved plans for the museum used to be the
president of Alabama School for the Deaf and Blind.
To serve the needs of the deaf at the school and to ignore
the needs of the deaf at the museum was a sticking point
in this complaint that was printed in a local newspaper.
....
The Deaf and the Law:
Last week's DeafDigest mentioned a deaf couple in Georgia
requesting interpreters and being turned down in school
conferences involving their hearing children.
A similar court case took place in 1990.
Go to:
http://deafdigest.com/interpretercase/
there are two comments; the first one is brief; the second
one is long
Keep in mind this case took place before the ADA, which
has more clout
.....
News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is so concerned
about genetics that he is calling for scientists, attorneys
economists and biotech professionals to advise judges on
how genetics work, but also how could future court decisions
create an impact?
Interesting to see what they would also have to say about
deaf genetics, if they do say something at all.
(DeafDigest does not know if anything came out of it?)
.....
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Podcasting possibly helping the deaf? Yes, and it has
nothing to do with music downloading.
Hearing students attending classes use the iPod to
record the lectures for replay later in the day. Of
course, we, the deaf, find iPod useless for that
purpose - unless - a deaf inventor comes up with a
100 percent accurate voice-to-text version of the
professors' lectures.
Quipped a DeafDigest subscriber:
voice-to-text versions would also help the hearing
student, tired of using the iPod all day!
.....
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Why is it that for years we have enjoyed and
laughed at the slapstick antics of Leslie Nielson
without realizing he was really deaf just like all
of us?
.....
A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?
Last week DeafDigest editor and his wife with
family members went to a restaurant in Elmira, NY.
Just as when DeafDigest editor left the restaurant,
a hearing patron ran after him and started talking
non-stop for few minutes.
What did that person say? Impossible to understand
and it was an ordeal to smile and just nod, wishing
the hearing person would go away.
It was learned that DeafDigest resembled the
person's deceased brother that she misses him to
this day. So the one-way conversation was to focus
on the near resemblance!
if you have lipreading tales, please share these with
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
