Top stories about the deaf:
The Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences
refused to admit a student because of his deafness.
As a result, a discrimination lawsuit has been filed.
More and more deaf-run cafes are sprouting up overseas.
The latest is Deaf Connections Cafe in Scotland.
The Michigan deaf community is pretty much pleased with the new laws regarding interpreters that is due to
kick off on July 7th.
Ireland is broke. As a result, funding for the Irish Deaf
Society has been withdrawn. Deaf activists are not too
happy about it.
UK Sport, the governing body of British Olympics and Winter
Olympics teams, just tripled their funding for their athletes.
UK Sport also provided more money for its Paralympic athletes.
For the deaf - zero funds! Sounds pretty much familiar in USA.
How much money was involved? £31 million or 53 million in USA
dollars!

ANGRY AT A FAMOUS DEAF PERSON
DeafDigest editor is angry at a famous deaf person.
Sorry, the name of that famous deaf person is a secret.
Anyway that famous deaf person told DeafDigest editor
that he loves sign language and uses it all the time
with deaf people. His sign language is pretty good
But that same famous deaf person tells other deaf person
he is an oralist and never uses sign language!
Why tell lies?

DUMB HEARING RESTAURANT HOSTESS
You and your friend enter a restaurant. The hostess
leads you to a table, which is next to another deaf person
and his friend.
That another deaf person and his friend are enemies
with you. This makes things very uncomfortable for
the deaf people sitting near each other.
Is it the hostess' fault? Probably yes, because
she assumes that all deaf people are friends; the hostess
should have known better - because many hearing people
have enemies.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being told:
my family member is deaf
if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories,
please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Another type of error that a realtime captioner or CART provider
might make would be a mishearing error. If you are familiar with a
subject matter, it is much easier to understand what someone is
saying.
What deaf people may not understand is that occasionally hearing
people mishear or do not understand something someone says, but then
a few seconds later, they realize what was actually said. Sometimes
the person may not even realize that he or she misheard or
misunderstood what was said. Unfortunately, when something like that
happens with a captioner, it is usually too late to go back and
correct what was already sent to the screen.
One area where mishearing frequently occurs is when listening to song
lyrics. Many people may continue singing incorrect song lyrics for
years because they never realize that they misheard or misunderstood
them. Part of the problem is that there may be little context for the
lyrics to make sense.
One common mishearing comes from the song "Bad Moon Rising" by
Creedence Clearwater Revival. Many, many people haven't realized that
the lyrics are "There's a bad moon on the rise." Instead, they
continue to sing along by singing "There's a bathroom on the
right."
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
many people assuming that to be deaf is to be less intelligent
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw
History has been broken in London when sign language was the primary
language in a criminal case since the victim, defendant and witnesses
all used it. And everything was videotaped to make sure that all
were in agreement with what was being signed all around.
The Ministry of Justice and Home Office representatives are
studying the case to understand its implications.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
We now have a deaf attorney in Belgium that was elected to the
Flemish Parliament. The woman of such a huge honor is Helga Stevens,
a graduate of University of California law school and an attorney
with the Brussels bar.
Because Belgium is a tri-lingual country, different regions are
autonomous, and the Flemish Parliament takes care of people in their
own region.
Congrats, Helga.
......
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
It is terrible to be deaf. This is the attitude exhibited
by the residents of Dadhkai, a village hidden in the remote
section of India.
This tiny village consists of 47 families, and each one
has at least a deaf member. This has been going on since
1931.
Why the high incidence of deafness? Interbreeding. And
said a village resident:
The birth of a child is a very happy occasion, meant to be
celebrated. But here the birth of a child leads to
harassment not only for the parents but for the entire village
The village needs a massive attitude adjustment!
......
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
Are we seeing a paradox?
The more strict the ADA laws are, the more resistance
we are seeing from these defendants.
Weren't these ADA laws supposed to make these defendants
more compliant?
Apparently not!
.......
Lipreading: What did that person say?
The deaf person went to an eye specialist. He dilated
her eyes with some medication.
The nurse asked some questions.
The deaf person thought the nurse asked:
are your eyes gassy?
The nurse actually asked:
are your eyes hazy?

All GSD students will graduate with a positive Deaf identity as bilinguals
in American Sign Language and written English, and will be prepared to
make successful life choices.
VISION STATEMENT
The Georgia School for the Deaf offers high quality educational and
extracurricular activities that prepare its graduates for further
academic, social and career success. This is achieved in a fully
accessible American Sign Language (ASL)/English bilingual environment,

use of both ASL and written English.
SCHOOL HISTORY
Northwest Georgia's picturesque Vann's Valley is the home of the Georgia
School for the Deaf, Georgia's only residential school serving Deaf and
Hard-of-Hearing students. GSD was established in 1846 on the grounds of
the Hearn Academy by one of its teachers, O. P. Fannin. A log cabin and a

service to children across the state. GSD was the eleventh residential
school for the Deaf established in the United States. GSD has an
expansive campus of 480 acres in the small community of Cave Spring. The
relationship between Cave Spring and GSD is unique because many residents
and business owners are able to communicate with sign language.
Below are vacancies for the upcoming school year:

- Teacher
- Graduation Coach
- American Sign Language Specialist
- Reading Content Specialist
