Dedication
DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Betty
Berg that departed us. A long time resident
of Washington, DC area and widow of legendary
Gallaudet track coach Tom Berg, she was a
long time sign language teacher at
Gallaudet. Her students ranged from prep
students that knew no ASL to several congressmen.
Top stories about the deaf:
Over 40 deaf Uber drivers in Quebec are worried
they would lose their jobs if province cannot
reach agreement with Uber regarding work rules.
Babelyn Mukila, who is deaf, won the Miss
Tourism Mombasa County pageant. This country
will be using her to promote tourism in these
parts of Kenya.
The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission said
that the province does not provide basic services
for the deaf that do not live in the urban
centers. These families have been forced
to move out of their rural areas for that reason.
Banks in Kazakhstan have been accused of refusing
to loan money to the deaf.
In some parts of Australia, there is a scam
going on directed at auto mechanics. The
hearing person would pretend to be deaf and
have the interpreter speak to the mechanic
to verify his deafness. And before the
mechanic would realize it, he has already
been scammed out of his funds.

DEAF COLLEGE OR HEARING COLLEGE
We have deaf students that attend Gallaudet,
RIT and CSUN. We also have deaf students that attend
hearing colleges everywhere.
At Gallaudet, classes are taught in ASL. At RIT and
CSUN, interpreters are available.
At hearing colleges, it is always a struggle. One
deaf graduate of a hearing college said it was always
a hassle.
Worth it to attend Gallaudet, RIT and CSUN or to
attend hearing college?
You decide!

A BANK ROBBER AND A DEAF TELLER
This is a true story. A hearing bank robber went
to the teller window and whispered in her ear:
Give me all your money
The teller told him she is deaf and cannot hear
and asked him to write it down on piece of paper
The shocked bank robber ran away from the bank!

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
When realtime stenocaptioners and court reporters talk about their dictionaries, they are not talking about a standard dictionary that everyone uses.
Every captioner writes somewhat differently. Even though there are some similarities to all styles of writing on a steno machine, each captioner is taught a steno theory that will provide the foundation for the sounds and words that that captioner writes on the machine. Then the captioner chooses what entries work the best for him or her.
For instance, a captioner may hear the word "Sudoku" as "Suh . doe . coo" or "Soo . doe . coo." Some people may even say "Soo . doo . coo." The captioner would need to input it phonetically how he or she would write it on the machine.
There are a few different methods that a realtime captioner or court reporter can use to create and build the main dictionary and other job-related dictionaries that will be used in translating the text. Some schools offer pre-built personal dictionaries to students, and some software companies offer dictionary building kits. A captioner may take these and modify them to fit his or her writing style.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The lawsuit reached settlement regarding DVDs that
were marked as captioned but actually had no
captions.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
A newspaper article about ADA rights with the deaf, said that
exchanging written notes with a sales clerk at a store to
discuss purchase of an item is OK. But in a doctor's office,
if the deaf person's medical situation is complicated, then
an interpreter should be required. There are other situations
that would be OK to use a TTY or a CART or a text messaging
system.
