Top stories about the deaf:
If a certain bill in Rhode Island is passed,
it would force all drive-in fast food outlets
to be much more deaf-friendly than what it
ordinarily is. The sponsor of the bill is
a Coda.
A deaf police officer in Great Britain lost
his job because he allegedly was not able
to tell the difference between "shoot"
and "don't shoot" commands from his
superiors. He filed a job discrimination
lawsuit and won the case.
Georgia Council for the Hearing Impaired is
no more! It has become Georgia Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in a name
change!
In Oman, an Arabian nation, a group of
deaf students said that choices are
limited when it comes to selecting
college majors. Only one major was
deaf-friendly - business administration,
but not every deaf student is interested
in the business field.
A new deaf studies major is being offered
at Northern Michigan University, effective
this coming fall semester.

BRITISH TV BETTER THAN AMERICAN TV?
How many sign language programs do we see on
American TV programs?
Maybe zero; maybe one or two? It is different
in Great Britain.
The British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust
has money to fund some TV sign language programs
for the deaf.
Deaf in Great Britain more lucky than us in
USA?

A DEAF EMPLOYEE AND A BLIND BOSS
This is a true story. A blind man owns an auto
repair shop in Oregon.
One of his employees is a deaf mechanic. The
blind man can't drive. The deaf mechanic can't
hear engine noises.
They have worked together very well.

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
Here is little more on the history of computer translation for court reporters and captioners:
All of the early research and development work to attempt to develop software to translate stenotype shorthand symbols into English was carried out on IBM mainframe computers, making portability impossible.
By the mid-1960s, the U.S. government did have some success with this system in translating Russian and Chinese technical documents into English. IBM eventually stopped work on the project because there was too small a market for this technology.
A few years later, a new company called StenoComp Corporation took the government's research and development to the court reporting market.
StenoComp believed that, if the system could translate a foreign language into English, it could also translate stenographic representations of English into English words.

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
Some NTID students, in 1988, made the trip to Washington, DC
to join the Gallaudet Deaf President Now Protest.
And in 2006, history is repeating itself. Some NTID students
are making the trip this weekend to observe what actually is
going on. One of them is Lizzie Sorkin, the first deaf president
of RIT Student Government (announced in DeafDigest a couple of
weeks ago).

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
The Ann Arbor (Michigan) personnel office is looking for
the perfect person for the city administrator position.
Part of the job description asks for - the physical
ability to walk, stand, stoop, bend, reach, pull, push,
lift, finger, feel, grasp, talk, see, hear and perform
repetitive motions. Because nobody is perfect, it means
the deaf AND hearing applicants would not qualify!
