ASL class students at Olympia HS, Greece, NY, are raising their sign language levels on a higher level by performing during a stage rehearsal of the play "Finding Nemo." It was orchestrated by ASL teacher Sharon Duffy. Katie Leclerc, a deaf woman, who is featured in the "Switched At Birth" TV series, was interviewed. She told the reporter that she may have to work as long as 14 hours a day just to get these scenes in for the filming. This also includes work on her hair and makeup and then the wardrobe. - Very Hot News Rick Macomber is deaf and is a professional horse racer (standardbred trotters). He ended the 2011 racing season with over $20,000,000 in lifetime earnings. He has been racing professionally since 1996 and is Gallaudet's only professional athlete. - Sunday January 1st DiB Coffees of Hawaii, a coffee house in Malaysia, in the Damansara Perdana locale, has opened for business. It is fully operated by the deaf. - Monday January 2nd World University Debate Championships took place among university debating teams. In the latter rounds, one of the topics thrown at the teams was: Should deaf parents to send their children (whether deaf or hearing) to mainstream schools for their primary and secondary education DeafDigest finds it strange that hearing children of deaf parents should be sent to mainstreamed programs! At any rate, it is not known what the viewpoints of these debating teams were. - Tuesday January 3rd Marlee Matlin said that the TV program - Switched at Birth is a Deaf Breakthrough - because the theme is about the deaf as played by real deaf actors, and not by fake-deaf actors. - Wednesday January 4th In Singapore, an angry hearing stranger was riding on a bus, sitting next to a deaf man with his family. The deaf man turned his head away from the hearing man to chat with his family. This made the hearing man angry. As a result, the hearing man punched the deaf man twice in the face. He was arrested and had to pay nearly $2,500 in fines by the judge. Why was the hearing man angry? He was drunk! - Deaf Miscellaneous stuff When states are broke, then funding for social services are cut, especially for counseling deaf patients with mental illnesses. In Nevada, a deaf man, a schizophrenic, was arrested for murdering his aunt. It was pointed out that had Nevada provided complete mental health services for the deaf man, this crime may not have happened. ..... QUALIFIED DEAF STUDENTS CANNOT ATTEND COLLEGE IN GHANA There are qualified deaf students that successfully graduate from high school in Ghana. And if they wish to pursue their education, in most cases they cannot. Reason is no money for interpreters. Students must pay for interpreters out of their pockets in addition to paying for college tuition and fees and incidentals. And making it worse is lack of a computer network to help the deaf students go through the system. A COMPLEX INTERPRETING ARRANGEMENT What is a complex interpreting arrangement? It took place in King County (Washington) last year. In a court case it involved a deaf couple, living in Korea, and a deaf couple living in King County. One interpreter was a hearing woman, who spoke Korean and knows Korean Sign Language, but could not speak English. Another interpreter had to translate spoken English into spoken Korean. And a third interpreter had to do everything in Korean Sign Language, and another one, with ASL. A nightmare? Yes, but the mission was accomplished, via the Skype for the benefit of the deaf Korean couple, living in Korea. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? this comment - your hands must have been blessed if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please mailto:barry@deafdigest.com COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series What should we do if we have a complaint about closed captioning? Here is information from the FCC's Web site about what steps you should take: For captioning problems during non-emergency programming, you may file a written complaint with either the FCC or your VPD (i.e., your cable or satellite TV service, or the TV station if you do not pay for cable, satellite or another subscription video service). If you file your complaint with the FCC, the FCC will forward the complaint to your VPD. The FCC rules establish specific time limits for filing closed captioning complaints. Your written complaint must be filed within 60 days of the captioning problem. After receiving a complaint, either directly from you or from the FCC, the VPD will have 30 days to respond to the complaint. If you filed your complaint with your VPD and they do not respond within 30 days, or if a dispute remains, you can send your complaint to the FCC. You can file your written complaint by using an online complaint form. You can also file your complaint with the FCC's Consumer Center by faxing 1-866-418-0232; or writing to: Federal Communications Commission Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Division 445 12th Street, S.W. Washington, DC 20554 SWITCHED AT BIRTH SLOPPY SIGNING? Many deaf people are happy that the TV show - Switched at Birth - has come back. Some of these deaf people are already complaining about "sloppy signing" by some of the actors on the program! .............................................................. .............................................................. weekly DeafDigest Blue & Gold editions also posted at: http://deafdigest.com/ updated every Monday .............................................................. .............................................................. TIMES HAVE CHANGED We are fortunate that times have changed. Way back in the early part of 20th century, many deaf women worked in the textile industry or in the garment industry or in other people's homes. Nowadays, the jobs are more diverse. .............................................................. .............................................................. For postings, announcements and employment ad rates, please email mailto:barry@deafdigest.com for Special Notes, please go to the bottom of the Gold section .............................................................. .............................................................. The Deaf and the Law: A deaf woman, continuously denied promotion over the years at a federal government agency, filed a lawsuit, accusing her employer of discriminating against the deaf. The court duly noted her habitual filing of formal complaints over the years with her agency's Office of Civil Rights. Her agency claimed that she did not follow the pre-complaint procedures that all employees are entitled to. The district court, while acknowledging points raised by both parties, dismissed her case on grounds that she was not impacted by the workplace discrimination that she claimed she was. As expected, she has filed an appeal with a higher court of authority. ...... News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago: A fly's mission? A research team at Binghamton University, New York, have patterned a new hearing aid model after a parasitic fly (Ormia orchracea). The patterned model, if perfected, would detect frontal noises, but block out rear noises. Why? Don't the hard of hearing people want to hear those tip toeing behind them or those that talk behind their backs? At any rate, the researchers acknowledge that mass production of this one-dimensional hearing aid is difficult. ...... News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Bob Davila's first day message to everyone associated with Gallaudet (faculty, teachers, staff, alumni and friends) deserves a round of applause. He stressed key points (healing, understanding, openness, diversity and support) while planning to soon make vital decisions, some immediate, some long term. (as mentioned in last week's DeafDigest, Bob left Gallaudet in a pretty good shape for the current president Alan Hurwitz to inherit) ...... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: We are always reading these newspaper stories on how "miraculous" a CI is, "immediately" restoring powers of hearing in a life-long deaf person. When we one stop and think about it, is it possible that, thanks to powers of technology, which makes today's invention obsolete tomorrow, the CI will become obsolete and become a piece of relic in a museum? DeafDigest is saying this because there are parallel newspaper stories of these "miraculous" invisible, but extremely powerful multi-dimensioned hearing aids, and of gene-therapy procedures (these competing technologies). We need to wait for year 2022 to come forward to see what happens in the world of deafness. .... A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say? A friend came to me and I thought he said: your keyboard label is on the ground and I put it back on your porch table Keyboard label? He actually said: your Kenmore label is on the ground and I put it back on your porch table (it fell off the house air conditioner/heating unit) -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- * YOU COULD PLACE YOUR PAID EMPLOYMENT ADS IN THIS SECTION * on a per-subscriber basis, the DeafDigest ad rates are the best in the nation. * For more information, send E-mail to mailto:barry@deafdigest.com -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- position opening Vocational Program Director Community Outreach Program for the Deaf Tucson, AZ Enjoy a rewarding career working with the Deaf, Deaf/Blind, and Hard of Hearing population in beautiful, sunny southern Arizona!
