A BIG KETCHUP HASSLE You go to a fast food restaurant with your hearing friend. But before you enter the counter to place your order, your hearing friend excuses himself to use his cell phone. You point and gesture and tell the counter person that you order a hamburger. The counter person says something you do not understand, and you tell him you are deaf. The counter person stubbornly repeats the same thing and you continue to tell him you are deaf. So much hassle. A DEAF CLUB PUSHES FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS The Pittsburgh Association of the Deaf, one of the nation's strongest deaf clubs, has been pushing the city to install traffic lights at a busy city intersection (Fifth and Gist Avenues). This intersection has been the scene of frequent traffic accidents. A club spokesperson said visible traffic signals and 30-second countdown clocks have greatly helped deaf pedestrians. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? Some people do not understand that realtime captioning is actually being done "live" as an event is taking place.  The captions are displayed immediately, and there is no time to proofread or correct an error. Imagine if you were typing along on a keyboard as fast as you could type. Even if you are an excellent typist, there will be some mistakes. Although captioners do not use QWERTY keyboards, they may be writing on their steno machine keyboards at top speeds for extended periods of time. It is important that caption viewers learn how to distinguish between good captioning and poor captioning. Even though there will always be some mistakes in realtime captioning, caption viewers should not have to settle for poor captioning. We must learn what an acceptable amount of errors would be. An occasional error in realtime captioning would be acceptable. When there are many, many errors to the point that possibly you cannot even follow what is going on, it is time to think about complaining to the television station or programming distributor. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF hearing people thinking that shouting in the ear of a deaf person would help him hear better! (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. The Advocate also works with businesses, agencies, and service providers on both an individual and systems basis in order to educate them on the needs and rights of deaf and hard of hearing individuals as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  Domains within which the Advocate may provide support to clients include but are not limited to the following: communication assistance, peer counseling, disability benefits, health care, housing, money management, transportation, independent living, assistive technology, and employment. Major Responsibilities 1.        Guide deaf and hard of hearing clients in the selection of the communication method(s) that will provide them full access to community information and services (i.e., interpreters, relay services, CRT services, and document translation). 2.        Educate deaf and hard of hearing clients and the community at large on the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the rights and responsibilities contained therein. 3.        Provide individual and small group assistance to deaf and hard of hearing clients in the areas of disability benefits, health care, housing, money management, transportation, independent living, assistive technology, employment, the ADA, and more. 4.        Peer counsel clients by providing them with empathetic support and guidance as they deal with everyday problems and crisis situations, referring them to community mental health providers and support groups, when appropriate. 5.        Work with underserved individuals and groups, including senior citizens, school transition youth, and deaf refugees. 6.        Collaborate with the Community Education Coordinator to educate businesses, agencies, and other service providers in small and large group settings on topics that include but are not limited to the following: American Sign Language (ASL), Deafness, Deaf Culture, the ADA, and the various laws and programs that benefit and protect the rights of deaf and hard of hearing persons. 7.        Screen all new clients and document needs and recommended services via an intake form. 8.        Document services provided to clients via a daily log sheet, and submit a monthly report to the Executive Director. 9.        Collaborate with the Public Relations Coordinator to promote the advocacy services DAS provides. 10.        Work with the Executive Director and business office to establish and manage a sustainable budget for the services provided by the Community Advocate. Other Responsibilities 1.        Assist, as needed, at DAS activities and events (including fundraising events). 2.        Perform other tasks and projects, as assigned by the Executive Director.
