Top stories about the deaf:
A deaf business owner who won a national award in
Great Britain for deaf entrepreneurship has now
been exposed as a fraud - for bilking the government
out money. He billed the government for deaf relay
services that were never performed.
Nyle DiMarco has been pretty much written up in
the newspapers, and he told one reporter, joking
that he dances so smoothly with his partner that
he can dance blindfolded!
An activist in South Africa gave this speech, saying
that all newspaper journalists, wanting to interview
the deaf, need to learn sign language first. Possibly
advice was because of low confidence of interpreters
in the nation!
Deaf Forensic Psychiatry! What is it? A conference
is taking place in India to discuss what Forensic
Psychiatry is all about and how it could be of help
to the deaf in need of counseling.
A social service agency in Iraq is trying to
establish a training program to help the deaf.

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
complained an interpreter:
being asked this question -
what do you do for a living?
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
"I sometimes see mistakes in the realtime captioning on TV. How do I get captioning without mistakes?"
Some captioning must be done "live," such as for news, sports, and other events. Unfortunately, because we are all human, there will be some mistakes in realtime captioning. It is important to become educated about the difference between an acceptable number of errors and poor captioning. Many companies say that their captioners achieve a 98% accuracy rate. That means that there are two mistakes in every 100 words. If you look at the words that have been written so far in this comment, 98% would mean that two of the words would be wrong.
All of the truly great captioners still make mistakes, but their accuracy rate is usually above 99%. Some captioners are even able to attain a rate of 99.5% or better.
Some of the newer captioning programs claim to be 80% or 90% accurate. That means that, for every 100 words, 10 or 20 of them will be wrong. When you read something with that many errors, it may be very difficult to follow what is being said.
It is important that people who use captioning let the people who are responsible for the captioning know that 80% to 90% is not acceptable. However, we all must understand that there will sometimes be a few errors in the realtime captioning just because no one is perfect.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
we are always the last to know about anything, thanks to constant announcements being made over
the PA system
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
In Seychelles, a textile fashion program, called
"Celebrate Seychelles" was staged by the Small Enterprise
Promotion Agency.
The models that walked up and down the ramp were all
deaf.
At least Seychelles is one up on us because we do not
see deaf models at a major entertainment event.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
Doug Pravda, a deaf attorney and a past partner with the
Paul Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, a prestigious
international law firm, is becoming a federal prosecutor
in New York City. This announcement will be made soon.
Said another deaf attorney:
While there have been many deaf prosecutors at the state
or city level, I think Doug might be the first to do so
at the federal level.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
a newspaper printed deaf signs for such hated
politicians like Trump, Clinton, Sanders and
Obama - plus long ago politicians - Nixon
and Reagan.
Draw your own conclusions!
