BRITISH DOCTORS ARE ANGRY The British doctors are angry. Why? Because the telecommunication carriers plan to charge the doctors for sending text messages to remind patients to show up for their appointments. Many of these doctors have deaf patients. COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series Some errors that captioners and CART providers make are a result of mishearing what is said, but many of the errors where it may appear that the captioner misheard something are actually caused by word boundary problems when the computer software is translating the steno. Because captioners write syllable by syllable and do not put spaces between the words, something like a "grand parade" may translate as a "grandpa raid."  The captioner may have heard it correctly, but when he or she entered the steno, the computer translated it in an incorrect way. Someone may ask, "Did the men unite against the cause?"  A captioner has to be cautious that that does not translate as "Did the menu night against the cause?" Because these two sentences are basically the same phonetically, a captioner somehow has to make the distinction between the "u" sound coming at the end of the word or at the beginning of the word. Many captioners were not taught a way to differentiate between the two sentences above, and they must come up with their own way to do it.  Sometimes captioners realize that there is a word boundary problem only after a sentence has been written and the viewers have already seen the mistake. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF after a family visit and then being ignored by family members, being told "I am glad you are here" (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. As we know, the Sixth Sense is acute among deaf people as a way of compensating for one of our missing senses. Glad to see that these MIT people is recognizing the Sixth Sense even though they did not mention deafness in their study. ...... News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: We have had high profile deaf and hard of hearing individuals serve as spokespersons for respective organizations or agencies serving the deaf. Examples were famous actress Nanette Fabray, during the seventies, and in recent years - Marlee Matlin, Heather Whitestone-McCallum, among others. These people were household names where recognition and identity were instant. But Paul Rabil? Hard-core lacrosse fans know who he is - a former Johns Hopkins University star and now playing professionally with the Boston Cannons in the pro lacrosse league. He is the spokesperson for the National Cued Speech Association. Not too many people, outside of the close-knit lacrosse community, knew he had a lifelong hearing loss. ...... Lipreading: What did that person say? At a restaurant with deaf friends, the deaf person thought the waitress, at the cash register, said "26" 26 dollars for a low cost meal?
