The Air Canada was ordered to pay $10,000 in damages. But Air Canada was not required to admit future deaf-blind passengers. Contradictory? Yes, hence this non-punishment! ... BLACKOUTS AND THE DEAF We have read in the newspapers about power blackouts in Kentucky because of bad snow storms. The Amish people were OK, while their neighbors were not OK. Amish families do not depend on electricity while we, all do. Years ago, there was a power black out in New York City. There was no electricity everywhere. The blind people were OK while we were not. The blind people do not depend on lights to walk through the building. Let us suppose there was no sound everywhere in the world. One such Dummy book is missing - on advising deaf students in high schools on choice of college - should it be a deaf college (Gallaudet and NTID) or a hearing college? There are always issues that hearing colleges - interpreting problems, social life isolation, faculty insensitivity, CART breakdowns - that many deaf kids in high school may not be aware of. A PUZZLING RESTAURANT REVIEW COMMENT In a British newspaper, the restaurant review columnist wrote: Don't take your deaf mother there It was in reference to a London restaurant that was being reviewed for its food, service and atmosphere. DeafDigest is not sure of the comment - if it was an off-the-shelf joke or if it assumes that only hearing mothers can tolerate the food that is being served? MARYLAND LEGISLATORS THREATEN ITS DEAF AGENCY For some reason for years, the deaf commission in Maryland (better known as Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing - ODHH) was never a high priority with the government executives. And now this - the state legislators are pondering a bill that would eliminate vital ODHH positions and to reduce funding, and as a final insult, to move ODHH within the confines of the state Department of Disabilities. Because this would render ODHH insignificant, state deaf leaders are already furious and up in arms. A VERY DETAILED JOB There was a story on Brian Kraft, not deaf, in the February 10, 2009 edition of the Washington Post. He is a contractor with the District of Columbia and his job is to transfer to a database these microfiched files on past city building permits between 1877 and 1949. And when he is done, he will then work on building permits from 1950 through 1958 and so on. On each permit, there is information such as "what was the building used for." For years the most famous Deaf Building was the District of Columbia Club of the Deaf (DCCD). It was torn down to make way for the new FBI Building. From time to time DeafDigest editor bumps into old timers who would vividly recall the old DCCD building but would not remember the exact location! DeafDigest is still wondering where the exact location was. GOING THROUGH NAME CHANGES We all know what AgBell is. Were we aware that this organization has gone through several name changes? It originally was: American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf. This was what telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell named the new organization. It then changed to: Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and now this: Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing RANDOM WORKSHOP QUESTIONS DeafDigest editor attended a workshop where an executive from the Dominion Virginia Power company was the keynote speaker. DeafDigest asked the speaker two questions: 1. Have there been any ADA-related issues with your company over the years? His response is - never, we are in full compliance and we support ADA provisions 2. Have you had deaf employees in any of the departments in your company? His response is - yes, we have a number of deaf employees in the company offices, but we do not have deaf employees out there on the field such as linemen and installers; these are dangerous jobs, and it is already dangerous enough for those that can hear. DeafDigest remembers a telephone company in Arkansas hiring a deaf telephone installer. But that was years ago. A SENSE OF DEJA VU WITH GEICO ADS We watch TV and are constantly bombarded with these silly GEICO ads. Way back in the fifties and sixties, GEICO had a bad reputation for refusing to accept deaf drivers for automobile insurance coverage. GEICO carried this message that the deaf should not drive cars and therefore, should not be carrying drivers' insurance policies.
