Discover the Mystery "Beyond the Embers"
The latest DVD from ASL Films, "Beyond the Embers" has four curious
stories within a hair-raising central story.
Frank and his 3 friends go on a hiking trip that is out of this
world. They tell stories of greedy debtors, a woman witnessing a
murder, a family with dark secrets and the mysterious disappearance
of Frank's sister. When the fine line between truth and tale
dissolves it reveals the ultimate discovery that is just as
unsettling as the tales they tell. This DVD is signed completely in
ASL (no audio) and is closed captioned.
"Beyond the Embers" (DVD450) is on sale now at Harris Communications
for only $23.39, regularly $25.99.
Receive free ground shipping in the contiguous U.S. whenever you
order from Harris Communications.

Top stories about the deaf:
Legislators in Florida expressed shock that the
state has no certification standards for
ASL interpreters. When asked about it, a veteran
ASL interpreter said the situation is no better
nowadays as it was years ago!
At a recent conference of interpreters,
there were complaints that an interpreting
corporation monopolized a session, imposing
its views with no leeway for feedback or
discussions.
A state legislator in Wisconsin hosted a mental
health hearing, wanting to know the best ways
to serve deaf patients that need counseling.
Diamond Trading Company Botswana has donated
a truckload of computers and sign language
books to the Botswana School for the Deaf.
Often when there is a sole mainstreamed
person in a classroom, hearing classmates
will ignore that student. In the case of
a classroom of 6 year olds in Bosnia,
the entire classroom learned sign language
to communicate with its sole deaf classmate!

SMALL TOWN DEAF JOB SEEKERS
Years ago when times were great, it was not hard for
deaf people to find jobs, even in small towns.
A deaf service agency in the small town would refer deaf
clients to hearing agency that finds jobs for them.
Not any more. Both agencies have constantly been referring
deaf clients to each other, hoping the "other" agency will
find jobs for them.
Times have changed and this is sad.

THE FACE IS ALWAYS ANGRY
DeafDigest editor knows of several deaf people that always
look angry, even when they're not angry!
It has alot to do with facial expressions, and it is
unfortunate because it scares away deaf people that want
to be friends with them!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?
being trapped as a captive audience during the
interpreter convention session when one group
tries to convince them that their interpreting
way is the only way!
COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series
We have seen how stenocaptioners must enter every word in their
dictionaries in order for those words to translate properly.
Sometimes a captioner may have entered a word into his or her
dictionary, and that captioner may not remember on the spur of the
moment while captioning at speeds of over 200 words per minute that
that particular entry is in the dictionary.
An example of this might be if the captioner has entered the
following entries in his or her dictionary:
TKEF=deaf
SEUT=sit
A sentence may come up something like this:
"Do people who are deaf sit in the section with the sign language
interpreter?"
Because the captioner is writing phonetically and not spelling words
out letter by letter, the captioner may also have the following entry
in his or her dictionary:
TKEF/SEUT=deficit
If that were the case, the sentence would now translate like this:
"Do people who are deficit in the section with the sign language
interpreter?"
A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF
hearing people telling the deaf that they should
not gesture but to try to speak
(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,
Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user,
etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw
A big discussion took part at the Ethics Bowl at
University of Findlay (Ohio). The topic was:
is it legal to genetically design genes to make
the baby deaf?
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:
The Super Bowl is over.
We want to know who captioned and who did not caption
their commercials.
We applaud those that captioned their commercials.
We do not applaud those that didn't. Many deaf people
rent their DVDs (captions/subtitles) from Blockbuster,
which is on the non-caption list.
This huge irony leaves us with a dilemma. Should we
boycott Blockbuster and then deprive ourselves of enjoying
their captioned DVDs?
(editor's note: Blockbuster, once a giant, is dead.
Netflix killed off all competitors)
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
The state of Texas is broke, and has been warning
people about possible budget cuts. Such funding
issues may impact on Texas School for the Deaf.
This school, by law, is obligated to accept students
from referring districts. Still, the school may have
to put a cap on enrollment size, and it technically
may break the law!
(editor's note: TSD has survived this crisis, and
is stronger than ever)
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
DeafDigest editor was watching an Australian video
of deaf in unusual jobs. Why is it that some deaf people
have been hired to work in these unusual jobs, yet
other deaf Australians just cannot find work?
