WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? being forced to endure miserable working conditions at some mainstreamed programs! COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series What should a CART provider do if he or she doesn't hear or understand what is being said in a classroom? Should the CART provider interrupt the speaker? The CART provider's job in a classroom is to provide equal access. Sometimes a student or teacher may be mumbling, and no one in the room can hear or understand everything that is being said. The hearing people might only be getting the gist of what is being said because they are missing words here and there. It is the CART provider's job to communicate that information to the CART consumer. Sometimes a student who is very shy or has a foreign accent is called upon to answer a question, and he or she is unsure of the answer. The student may intentionally mumble or speak very softly or unclearly because they are very nervous and really don't want everyone in the class to hear what they have to say. Interrupting that student might make the student even more flustered and make it more difficult for that student to speak in front of the class. In that circumstance, rather than interrupting the student, it would probably be better for the CART provider to communicate to the CART consumer the manner in which the student is speaking. Then if the CART consumer would like clarification, he or she could ask for the information to be clarified. A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF People assuming that there is only one sign language worldwide and that every deaf person understands it (Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral, Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. Not just that we do not have full assurance of captions on HTV, but also that the targeted FCC deadline of Year 2006 for full conversion to HDTV may be delayed. FCC chairperson Michael Powell is asking that the deadline for full conversion to HDTV be Year 2009. Again, even by Year 2009, we need to be fully assured of captions. The release says: In his new role, Feldman will direct all aspects of the NAD under the oversight of Bloch, who will place greater focus on fundraising and donor relations. The key word is "oversight." At any rate, he moves over to NAD, his old stomping grounds after being with the www.deafdc.com.
