- Dedication

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Gabe Zimmerman,
who was killed in a tragic shootout in Tucson last
week. While she was not deaf, she was aide to
Rep Giffords and she attended a panel discussion
hosted by the Community Outreach Program for the Deaf
in the past.

- What the best stories are saying about the deaf?

Ed Ziegler, who was deaf but functioned as a hearing person,
is a resident of North Baltimore, Ohio, a town of 3,400 people.
He served on the town council and with the North Baltimore Fire Department for over 45 years. He was inducted into the
athletic hall of fame at North Baltimore HS, honoring him for
his exploits in track and field during the early sixties.
He does not know ASL.

FCC deaf attorney Greg Hlibok was written up in The
National Law Journal. As a 9-year old kid he told
people he wanted to be an attorney only to be told
to look elsewhere for a different career. Had he
listened, the FCC would have had a different attorney!

- Very Hot News

Deaf pilots cannot work on a commercial airplane because
of tower radio communications. Josh Mech, a Wisconsin deaf man outfitted with a double CI, was given OK by the Federal Aviation Administration on his career plan to become a
commercial pilot.

While he is deaf without his double CI, he functions as a hearing person with his CIs.

- Sunday January 9th

A survey in Scotland of shops that claim to have induction loops revealed that 25 percent of these shop owners are not telling the truth!

- Monday January 10th

Becky Clark, a former Deaflympics participant,
with her own practice in Sports Psychology,
has collaborated with other authors on a book
titled "Routledge Handbook of Applied Sport
Psychology." Her piece focused on deaf athletes
as well as with blind athletes.

- Tuesday January 11th

Schools for the deaf, faced with dwindling enrollment
numbers, need to be creative to stay in business.
St Rita School for the Deaf in Cincinnati, Ohio, is
one of these schools. This school has started a new program for apraxic children. The children are hearing but are not able to use speech because of a speech disorder.

- Wednesday January 12th

In Warrington, a borough in United Kingdom, the
council is taking over the operations of services
for the deaf. What this may mean is that there is
no service agency in the area that serves the deaf?

WATCHING A HEARING CONVERSATION
You watch a hearing conversation for a minute
or two and you are amazed.
They do not move their lips and they have a
long conversation, back and forth with each other.
Do they speak through their teeth or through
their closed mouths or through their tongues?
No matter - it is always amazing - but impossible
for a deaf person to lipread!

BAD PSYCHOLOGY AT AGE OF 60
Many hearing people read newspapers and magazines
that tell them they will become deaf at the age of 60.
This is bad psychology. Many of these hearing people
have perfect hearing at age of 59. And when they become
60 years old they think they are already deaf - because
they believe they would be deaf at that age.
This is not a joke.

DOCTORS NEVER SEEING A DEAF PERSON
Many doctors have never seen or met a deaf person
in all of their years of medical practice.
This is unfortunate because they may give wrong
advice to the parents of the first deaf patient
(more likely a deaf child) that came to them.
One doctor gave this advice:

in a hospital where I work, when a patient comes in
with a rare disease (like one in a million), all
the doctors are called in to observe in the watching
room so they can get an idea of what this is all about

This being said, do doctors call other doctors
when they see a deaf patient for the first time in
their lives?
Probably not.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE NAD'S BOY SCOUT LAWSUIT
Last week, DeafDigest announced that the NAD filed
a lawsuit against the Boy Scouts over their refusal to
provide interpreters for a deaf boy scout in a hearing
troop.
A father of Coda sons that are boy scouts said that
in his small town the scouting leaders (Boy Scouts and
the Cub Scouts) would email him on updates and vital
information.
Another comment said that the Scout troops do not make
money and cannot afford interpreters because all leaders
are volunteers.
Another comment was that the deaf boy scout only spent
15 minutes in meetings but that the minimum number of hours
interpreters must be paid is two hours - a losing proposition
for the Boy Scouts.
All of these comments are from deaf individuals that do not
agree with the NAD lawsuit!
And as a matter of speaking, Charlie McQuitty, who is deaf,
has just become an Eagle Scout in a troop in California. It is
not known, however, if he had an interpreter with him.

GOVERNMENT RECALL AND THE CI INDUSTRY
Regulations are a way of life in the federal government.
There are regulations on top of regulations. And attorneys
are hired in the private industry, whose sole job is to look
for loopholes in the regulations.
A Food and Drug Administration recall on Advanced Bionics
HiRes 90K has resulted in one thing - 150 Advanced Bionics
employees being laid off.

DIGITAL TV PANIC PAST AND NOW
In the past there was "panic" in the Deaf Community regarding
the anxiously anticipated conversion to digital TV. The panic,
however, proved needless, as the conversion went smoothly in
most places.
Right now there is panic - in the United Kingdom. They are
asking questions, exactly the same we were asking:

- What does the digital TV switchover mean to you?
- Do you need a new aerial?
- How much does a set-top box cost?
- Is there any financial help available to buy the necessary equipment?

American panic. British panic. Same thing!

WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE?

being asked:

do you read Braille?

if you have these "hate" or "horror" stories, please
mailto:barry@deafdigest.com

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series

I have sometimes been asked the question:

When did captioning start on TV?

The captioning that we are now accustomed to on television is what is
called closed captioning.  Closed captioning is not visible unless it
is turned on and a decoder is used.

There is also what is known as open captioning.  This is captioning
that anyone viewing a broadcast will be able to see, and it cannot be
turned off or hidden from view.

Open captioning is rarely used on television anymore, but the first
program to be captioned was open captioned.   On August 5, 1972,
Julia Child, "The French Chef," made history when she taught
viewers how to make a chicken recipe.  This was the first time
Americans could view captions on a television show, and it was a very
significant breakthrough for deaf and hard-of-hearing television
viewers.

NO ONE WANTING DEAF FIRE ALARMS IN INDIANA?
After three months of persuasion, there is still 500 deaf fire
alarms available, according to Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office.
These Deaf Fire Alarms are free, just for the asking. Yet,
low income deaf households are not taking these up.
Why?

DEAF POLITICAL AWARENESS

Q. Some sheriffs are elected public officials. Have we

A. Yes. Glenn Shelton, who was hard of hearing but went to

eighties. He won several terms.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

The Federal Signal Corporation reached a settlement with over a thousand
fire fighters in a class action suit. These firefighters claimed
hearing loss due to deafening siren blasts.

......

The Deaf and the Law:

- location

California

- case

state government would not provide interpreters for its
deaf and hard of hearing state employees during staff
meetings

- result

still pending; court system is always slow

- comment

California tends to plead poverty, always blaming
"Arnie" for their woes

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Could we use the word "Deaflympics" to describe our Deaf
World Games? This is what the CISS is asking the IOC. In the
past the IOC has said no since Olympics is a trademarked name.
Yet IOC has permitted the use of the word "Paralympics" but
saying no to "Deaflympics."

(editor's note: since then we've been given permission to
use the name "Deaflympics")

......

News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

Lloyd Robie, who was hard of hearing and was never
part of the Deaf Community, passed away at the age
of 87 in Hooksett, N.H.
Everyone has their 15 minutes of fame, And Robie's
fame was the phrase "Jimmy who?", a direct reference
to our one-term president Jimmy Carter.
He uttered the phrase when someone told him about
Jimmy Carter. Because Robie could not catch what was
being said, he replied ""Jimmy who?". This phrase
spread like wildfire.

......

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Last week's DeafDigest mentioned a deaf person with a blind
person during an interview, making communications impossible.

Here is another one, from a subscriber:

I experienced something similar at the IRS customer service office.
I wanted to get the tax forms. The sole IRS person on duty
was blind. He was able to get forms for customers via voice
and Braille. But when it was my turn, I had no choice to try
to talk to him; he tried talking to me, obviously unintelligibly.
It was an awkward situation until people in the line behind
me informed him that I was deaf. He then picked up the phone
and asked for a co-worker to come and help me.

....

A Lipreading Problem: What did that person say?

You are discussing a work matter with your boss

The boss said "class"

You thought the boss said "ask"
